Bec and Call

Bec and Call

Rife with colloquialisms, irony and a healthy dose of sass, the poems collected in Bec and Call refuse to be silent or subtle; instead they delve into the explicit, the audacious, the boldly personal. Bec and Call subverts the notion of female sexuality as male appeasement, the French wordplay in the title using the meaning of "bec"--a kiss, mouthpiece or beak--to complicate notions of compliance and submission. The roles of Acadienne and feminist come with the responsibility of speaking up, and Bec and Call is a means of vocalizing the societal d rangement of Acadian culture amidst the difficulties women encounter as a result of rape culture and anti-feminism. These poems are fearless and precise in their aim, but are not without a sense of play: Menstrual synchrony's a bitch in a household of women: some sheets never see the line, endometrial tissue Javexed and tumble-dried. To captains off-duty, solariums are wheelhouses. Antique binoculars magnify songbirds, deer and that one black squirrel. Close the blinds to neighbours. Girl, you're bodied, full-bodied, embodied.

Cult Of Ikarus is a dark, coming-of-age fantasy comic book series featuring vampires and a magical, supernatural underworld written by Jenna Lyn Wright, illustrated by Karl Slominski, lettered by Taylor Esposito, published monthly by Scout Comics. Tossed out by her foster family after one-too-many rides home in the back of a cop car, Hunter packs up her meager belongings and hops a train on a mission: stop drifting and finally find out who she is. That trip to the city is more like a trip down the rabbit hole, as she's introduced to a covert world of magic and danger running parallel to our own, complete with undead rock stars, a pair of sorcerer brothers with questionable morals, and a prophecy that puts her at the top of an ancient vampire coven's hit list. Turns out Hunter is half-human, half-vampire. The product of a forbidden love; she's an anomaly that shouldn't exist. And if those vamps get their hands on her, humanity's time at the top of the food chain may come to a swift and vicious end, and the world as we know it will cease to exist. Hunter came looking for answers. What will become of her once she gets them?

What the Lives of 5 Puritan Women Teach about Holy Living and Devotion to God The writings of the Puritans have had a recent resurgence, but many Puritan women have often been overlooked or misunderstood. As mothers, daughters, grandmothers, and wives, the vibrant faith of Puritan women has much to teach modern day readers. In 5 Puritan Women: Portraits of Faith and Love, Jenny-Lyn de Klerk shows how the lives and writings of Christian women encourage the beauty of holy living and provide practical wisdom for the home and the church. Each chapter portrays a different Puritan woman—Agnes Beaumont, Lucy Hutchinson, Mary Rich, Anne Bradstreet, and Lady Brilliana Harley—telling their stories of devotion, lament, and family. By studying their faith journeys, modern readers can learn more about their roles in church history and glean insights into the Christian life. Accessible Introduction: An affordable, easy-to-read format to introduce readers to the neglected writings of Puritan women Applicable: Explains the need for, and the value of, studying Puritan women today and highlights spiritual disciplines that these women demonstrate Women in Church History: Broadens the reader’s understanding of women’s roles in furthering God’s kingdom throughout historyForeword by Karen Swallow Prior

Elegy and promise stand side by side in this, the thirty fourth issue of your favorite Quarterly. Eight talented authors once again give you glimpses of worlds both familiar and alien, moving backwards and forwards in time and space, from Louisiana & Chicago, to a dusty settlement and abandoned house that bring new flavors to our tired notions of the apocalypse. The women and girls in these stories, like the authors that created them, are balancing old and new, grudges and hope, life and death. May we all learn from their journeys, their wisdom, and their folly.

Everyone knows what intoxication and drunkenness are, what they look like, how to define and measure them and what their consequences are. At least we might assume so given the ways these words are used by the media, by politicians and policy makers and by various medical, educational and legal experts in Australia and around the world. A whole variety of concerns about young people, individual and public health, road safety, sexual assault and violence are connected to these taken-for-granted understandings of intoxication and drunkenness. Drawing on an extensive review of research from biomedicine, psychology, sociology and legal studies, and from news media reporting, the authors reveal a far more complex picture. This is a picture marked by little agreement on how to define intoxication and drunkenness, how to measure intoxication, what getting drunk means to those who drink (including young people, men and women and people from different cultural and national backgrounds), and where responsibility lies for many of the individual, social, medical and legal consequences of intoxication and drunkenness. Smashed! presents an overview of the history of these concerns and an extensive account of the many meanings of intoxication and drunkenness at the start of the 21st century. It provides a valuable resource for researchers, policy makers, the media and members of the community who are involved in these ongoing, often emotive, debates.
