In Bed with the Badge is this generation's Burning Bed. Ms. Joyce and her brother, Raymond, tell the bloodcurdling story of how their father, Ray Sheehan retired NYPD Detective turned wife-beating into an art form by utilizing the very tactics he was taught in the police force. In a terrifying moment of kill or be killed, the authors mother, Barbara Sheehan, shot her husband with his own weapon. Following the not guilty verdict of second-degree murder, Barbara Sheehan, was found guilty of possession of a second weapon and is awaiting appeal of that verdict. The authors recount the details of the years of abuse their mother and they sustained at the hands of their father, and open up a dialogue about the controversial defense known as Battered Woman Syndrome.

My name is Jennifer Sheehan. I was born and raised in Southern California to a bipolar, alcoholic, pill-popping mother who was married six times. I was the oldest of four children and we were mentally and physically abused our whole life. We got free lunches, food stamps, clothes from garage sales, and even went dumpster diving behind the grocery stores after they closed. We grew up poor and lived in some incredibly rough neighborhoods. My mother could go from happy, to the kind of rage I have never seen in my life and unfortunately took it out on us children. My mother got rid of us all for free by sending us to church camp for a week when I was in 7th grade. That was the best gift my mother ever gave me because, at church camp, I prayed to receive Jesus as my Lord and Savior, and He became my everything; He changed my outcome and has always been enough I served four years in the Army with one year in Iraq. I became "Supply" and the armorer in charge of maintaining and repairing the weapons. I went from prom princess in high school, to being in Iraq in the middle of a war I believe I became a soldier in the Army to become now a soldier in God's Army It is shocking to most people looking at my life today and hearing where I came from. God took this abused, broken girl, and has lifted her up for His glory. We are all looking for love, joy, and peace but unfortunately, we are trying to get it from people and things which will let us down. When you place your trust in God to give you these things, He will not disappoint you and you can let people off the hook.

A history of winning intelligence practices from the Spanish Armada to Cyberwar that offers timeless, practical lessons we ignore at our peril. According to conventional wisdom, strategic surprise and other intelligence failures are both inevitable and ultimately irrelevant because, at least in international politics and war, military muscle matters more than brains. In Decision Advantage, Jennifer E. Sims counters this argument by investigating the history of intelligence through centuries of international conflict, including the 16th Century's Spanish Armada, two US Civil War battles, the hunt for President Lincoln's assassin, and key diplomatic crises before the two World Wars. Sims dives deep into these events to show that the competitive pursuit of intelligence advantage has been a measurable, buildable, and consequential form of power that can help competitors win against otherwise stronger opponents. From these observations, the author develops a general guide to building intelligence readiness, whether for war, diplomacy, or international manhunts. Refuting arguments that intelligence is a sideshow because intentions are unknowable and predictions risky, she redefines success as gaining information advantages over an adversary, prescribes four practical pathways for gaining them, and confirms what seems to be simple common sense: smart competitors know how to learn, and the ones who learn best tend to win. Thinking of intelligence in this way, Sims argues, adds a moral character to an enterprise that is too often mired in excessive secrecy and tyrannical agendas. By "lifting the veil" on international politics, Decision Advantage shows how good intelligence can lessen the likelihood of wars of misperception and folly.
Three Strikes Laws

Three Strikes Laws

Jennifer E. Walsh

Greenwood Press
2007
sidottu
In the mid-1990s, policymakers in more than half the states and the federal government responded to escalating crime rates and a series of sensationalized crimes by passing laws that imposed lifetime sentences on repeat offenders. Since then, the Three Strikes and You're Out movement, which embodies the overall get tough with crime approach to criminal sentencing, has generated much controversy. Critics argue that Three Strike laws are disproportionate, costly, and inefficient. Supporters, however, argue that the laws are effective, necessary, and just. Despite the controversy, Three Strike laws are still popular more than a decade after their implementation. Attempts to reduce the scope and/or severity of Three Strike policies have failed and the laws continue to affect thousands of offenders each year. Setting the record straight, Walsh provides a clear, comprehensive overview of the movement and its consequences. Do Three Strikes laws really prevent crime? Do they cost less than releasing repeat offenders time and time again? Are they evenly and fairly applied? These questions and more are answered in these pages through a careful analysis of the costs, benefits, and results of Three Strikes legislation. Walsh analyzes the historical development of the Three Strikes movement in the context of get tough sentencing reforms and provides detail about the various Three Strikes statutes adopted across the nation, while offering an in-depth exmamination of the controversies they have produced. Amid efforts to repeal or revise such statutes, the laws still stand, and this book sheds light on the history of, rationale for, and results of one of the most controversial criminal justice movements of our time.

Lucy lives on the twenty-fourth floor. Owen lives in the basement. It's fitting, then, that they meet in the middle -- stuck between two floors of a New York City apartment building, on an elevator rendered useless by a citywide blackout. After they're rescued, Lucy and Owen spend the night wandering the darkened streets and marveling at the rare appearance of stars above Manhattan. But once the power is back, so is reality. Lucy soon moves abroad with her parents, while Owen heads out west with his father. The brief time they spend together leaves a mark. And as their lives take them to Edinburgh and to San Francisco, to Prague and to Portland, Lucy and Owen stay in touch through postcards, occasional e-mails, and phone calls. But can they -- despite the odds -- find a way to reunite? Smartly observed and wonderfully romantic, Jennifer E. Smith's new novel shows that the center of the world isn't necessarily a place. Sometimes, it can be a person.
