An in-depth look at the exquisite metal sculpture of the Roman baroqueRoman baroque sculpture is usually thought of in terms of large-scale statues in marble and bronze, tombs, or portrait busts. Smaller bronze statuettes are often overlooked, and the extensive production of sculptural silver—much of which is now lost but can be studied from drawings—is frequently omitted from the histories of art. In this book, Jennifer Montagu enriches our understanding of the sculpture of the period by investigating the bronzes that adorn the great tabernacles of Roman churches; gilded silver, both secular and ecclesiastical; elaborately embossed display dishes; and the production of medals. Concentrating on selected pieces by such master sculptors as Bernini and leading metal-workers such as Giovanni Giardini, Montagu examines the often tortuous relationship between patrons and artists and elucidates the relationship between those who provided the drawings or models and the craftsmen who executed the finished sculptures.
Giovanni Battista Maini (1690-1752) and Roman Sculpture of His Time
Maini is one of the most important and accomplished, although least known and appreciated of late Baroque sculptors. This new monograph will provide an authoritative, scholarly and beautifully illustrated survey of all his principal commissions. Maini was born in Lombardy and had moved to Rome by 1710. His prestigious projects in the city included the funerary monument for Pope Innocent X in Sant’Agnese in Agone and the two majestic tombs in the family chapel of Pope Clement XII in San Giovanni in Laterano. Maini also worked in Santa Maria Maggiore and was involved in the design for the iconic Fontana di Trevi. These works are set in the context of the Roman art scene: the struggle for commissions, payment and reputation.

Following in the footsteps of H.G. Wells, Elizabeth Von Arnim, Arnold Bennett, Ada Leverson, May Sinclair and others, in 1915 the young Helen Waddell and Maude Clarke (later well-known medievalists) collaborated on a marriage-problem novel, Discipline, published here for the first time. Modeled on Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, the action centres on Elizabeth St. John's grievances against her husband, in her eyes justifying a series of rebellions which, however, rebound upon herself. Equally important is her friendship with Anne Delahide, sparkling with the fun of being intellectual. Like other marriage-problem novels, 'Discipline' sows seeds of feminist doubt even as the romantic comedy returns the heroine to the marital embrace. However, the friendship between Elizabeth and Anne allows the authors to hint at a homosocial alternative. The Introduction by Jennifer FitzGerald teases out the subtext, the struggles of a young university-educated and independent-minded wife to forge the stable self-defined identity her husband can take for granted. It examines the parallels and contrasts with Waddell's 1916 biographical essay, also published here, on the 18th-century Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, which also follows the trajectory of romantic comedy but ends in the humdrum, unrelenting heartbreak of an irreconcilable marriage. Both texts are comprehensively annotated.

Water development projects have altered the environmental flow landscapes where dams and diversions have been built, and this could have effects on coastal resources, particularly in estuaries. Water is an important human resource and water needs grow as populations grow. However, freshwater inflow to the coast is fundamental to the functioning of estuaries. Can we have stable, secure, and sufficient water resources for people and still protect estuarine health? Estuaries are the most productive environments on Earth, and this is in part due to freshwater inflow, which dilutes marine water, and transports nutrients and sediments to the coast. Estuaries are characterized by salinity and nutrient gradients, which are important in regulating many biological processes. As water is diverted for human consumption, it is common for many environmental problems to appear. While many countries have water quality programs, few are dealing with water quantity alterations. The first step is to define marine resources to protect, and the water quality conditions those resources need to thrive. The second step is to determine the flow regimes needed to maintain the desired water quality conditions. Finally, many regions are using adaptive management programs to manage freshwater resources. These programs set goals to protect ecosystem resources, identify indicators, and monitor the indicators over time to ensure that the goals are appropriate and resources are protected. Case studies demonstrate that monitoring and research can determine the ecological and socio-economical impacts of altered freshwater inflows, and stakeholders and managers can make well-informed decisions to manage freshwater inflows to local coasts wisely. ?
