An in-depth look at the exquisite metal sculpture of the Roman baroqueRoman baroque sculpture is usually thought of in terms of large-scale statues in marble and bronze, tombs, or portrait busts. Smaller bronze statuettes are often overlooked, and the extensive production of sculptural silver—much of which is now lost but can be studied from drawings—is frequently omitted from the histories of art. In this book, Jennifer Montagu enriches our understanding of the sculpture of the period by investigating the bronzes that adorn the great tabernacles of Roman churches; gilded silver, both secular and ecclesiastical; elaborately embossed display dishes; and the production of medals. Concentrating on selected pieces by such master sculptors as Bernini and leading metal-workers such as Giovanni Giardini, Montagu examines the often tortuous relationship between patrons and artists and elucidates the relationship between those who provided the drawings or models and the craftsmen who executed the finished sculptures.
Giovanni Battista Maini (1690-1752) and Roman Sculpture of His Time
Maini is one of the most important and accomplished, although least known and appreciated of late Baroque sculptors. This new monograph will provide an authoritative, scholarly and beautifully illustrated survey of all his principal commissions. Maini was born in Lombardy and had moved to Rome by 1710. His prestigious projects in the city included the funerary monument for Pope Innocent X in Sant’Agnese in Agone and the two majestic tombs in the family chapel of Pope Clement XII in San Giovanni in Laterano. Maini also worked in Santa Maria Maggiore and was involved in the design for the iconic Fontana di Trevi. These works are set in the context of the Roman art scene: the struggle for commissions, payment and reputation.

Though it is a story that involves travel, it is not typical in any way... After living in Rennes in northwestern France for some time and beginning to pay attention to some troubling signs, Claire determines that it is time to leave that city. As an artist and a creative, she finds that life in Bretagne is a little stale, affecting not only her art, but also every fiber of her being. So, she decides on a new life plan, one that will allow her to travel all over the world, practice her art, meet new people and build community with them. And she is going to do it all with her best pal, her motorcycle - the Pho nix. Feeling freer than she ever has, Claire and her trusty companion take the next big step by taking the ferry across the Strait of Gibraltar from Europe to Morocco, so excited for what the world has to offer. But, Claire's new life and lifestyle are almost brought to an abrupt halt when a catastrophic event occurs while she and The Phoenix are riding - alone - in a Moroccan desert. Will the Pho nix come back to life or will Claire lose hers before it really has a chance to begin?Teachers: this is a level 2 book.

Discipline: with 'Lady Mary Wortley Montagu'

Following in the footsteps of H.G. Wells, Elizabeth Von Arnim, Arnold Bennett, Ada Leverson, May Sinclair and others, in 1915 the young Helen Waddell and Maude Clarke (later well-known medievalists) collaborated on a marriage-problem novel, Discipline, published here for the first time. Modeled on Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, the action centres on Elizabeth St. John's grievances against her husband, in her eyes justifying a series of rebellions which, however, rebound upon herself. Equally important is her friendship with Anne Delahide, sparkling with the fun of being intellectual. Like other marriage-problem novels, 'Discipline' sows seeds of feminist doubt even as the romantic comedy returns the heroine to the marital embrace. However, the friendship between Elizabeth and Anne allows the authors to hint at a homosocial alternative. The Introduction by Jennifer FitzGerald teases out the subtext, the struggles of a young university-educated and independent-minded wife to forge the stable self-defined identity her husband can take for granted. It examines the parallels and contrasts with Waddell's 1916 biographical essay, also published here, on the 18th-century Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, which also follows the trajectory of romantic comedy but ends in the humdrum, unrelenting heartbreak of an irreconcilable marriage. Both texts are comprehensively annotated.

Body conscious, cubicle-working, and love lorn in the Minneapolis suburbs, Jennifer Johnson is your average American woman. So it's totally understandable when she freaks out after learning her ex-boyfriend is getting married, as is her younger sister, Hailey. To add insult to injury, this means she'll have to wear an Asian-inspried kimono bridesmaid dress, which shows every curve and dimple plus more. Approaching thirty, single, and still unsatisfied with her career as a copywriter for the family-owned Keller's department store, like any woman would, Jen begins to obsess about finding a boyfriend, losing weight, and perhaps chasing her dream job. When Brad Keller, heir to the Keller's business, comes into the picture, it looks like Jen's luck just might be changing. But, as often is the case, in reality, things are never quite as glossy beneath the surface and life's decisions aren't always about following your dream. We're with Jen every step of the way from her daily struggle to eat or not eat a Cinnabon to her decision to ruin the kimono with Drano, and finally, to her chance to define her 'happiness'.
