In this his latest book, Dr. Dirks begins by exploring the linguistic meaning and historical evolution of the messiah concept. In tracing the messiah concept among the Israelites, Dr. Dirks makes use of numerous Biblical passages and ancient Jewish writings to illustrate the earliest messiah concept and how that concept evolved into the three-messiah and two-messiah concepts that were so prevalent following the Babylonian captivity of the Israelites of the Southern Kingdom of Judah. Dr. Dirks then turns the readers' attention to the myriad of messiah figures that emerged in Palestine between 4 BCE and 135 CE. In closing, making use of extensive New Testament passages, he presents a provocative and daring thesis that there were two messiah figures named Jesus who operated during the same time in first-century CE Palestine and who were simultaneously tried by Pontius Pilate. One presented as a king messiah for which he was crucified, and one presented as a prophet messiah and was freed. It is posited that the identities and biographies of these two messiah figures were inadvertently fused by the New Testament gospel writers, thus accounting for some of the seeming inconsistencies in how Jesus is presented in the canonical gospels.

Boot Camps introduces to the criminal justice profession a general, but comprehensive look at this military style alternative to incarceration. The authors demystify this relatively unknown treatment program by closely tracing the history of the use of this military model in US prisons to its revitalization by contemporary correctional experts. Boot Camps provide the reader with theoretical and practical arguments regarding the implications underlying this sentencing option. It reveals the social, political, and economic contexts that resurrected this punitive, yet rehabilitative, approach to 'getting tough' on crime. This book also reveals the effect that boot camps have on the crime rate, criminal offenders, public outcry, and strained correctional budgets. Using professional jargon in an easy-to-read format, the authors provide the general public with a better understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of boot camps.

Hurricane Jerald: A Story of Forgiveness, Healing, and Breaking Free "I spent years trapped in a storm I couldn't escape. But I found a way out-through forgiveness." Sterling's childhood was one marked by the unseen scars of abuse-a reality so ingrained that he didn't even recognize it as different from what others experienced. For years, pain was his constant companion, and his suffering seemed as normal as breathing. But at the age of 12, something changed. For the first time, Sterling realized that the world wasn't supposed to feel this way. His life wasn't meant to be a cycle of fear and turmoil. Hurricane Jerald is the gripping and raw autobiography of a man who survived unimaginable hardship and emerged with a message of hope. This is the true story of one boy's struggle to understand his worth, his fight to reclaim his identity, and his powerful journey toward letting go of the past. At its core, this book is about transformation. It's about the choice to stop being defined by pain and start living for the future. Sterling's journey is a testament to the strength of the human spirit, and how it's possible to find peace, not by forgetting the past, but by forgiving it. In Hurricane Jerald, Sterling opens his heart and his history, offering readers an intimate look at the emotional toll of abuse-and the incredible resilience it takes to heal. Through heart-wrenching honesty, he reveals the depths of his anger, the struggles with his own identity, and the long road toward forgiving those who wronged him. But this book is not just about the past. It's about what happens when you decide to break free from it. If you've ever felt trapped in your own pain, if you've ever wondered how to forgive those who hurt you, or if you simply need a reminder that healing is possible-Hurricane Jerald will inspire you to find the courage to let go. Sterling's story is a beacon for anyone who has ever thought, "Can I truly heal? Can I really forgive?" Sterling's courage to share his painful story shows that healing isn't just a dream-it's a choice. And once that choice is made, freedom can follow. The power of forgiveness lies not in excusing the past, but in reclaiming your own future. Sterling's life proves that no matter how broken you feel, healing is possible. Through his story, you'll discover that when you choose to forgive-when you finally let go of the weight that holds you down-you can find peace, joy, and a new beginning.
*** Finalist for the PEN/Diamonstein-Spielvogel Award for the Art of the Essay****In this engaging follow up to How to Make a Slave and Other Essays, the recipient of PEN New England Award for nonfiction and finalist for the National Book Award sharply examines and explains Black life and culture with equal parts candor and humor. In Magically Black and Other Essays Jerald Walker elegantly blends personal revelation and cultural critique to create a bracing and often humorous examination of Black American life. He thoughtfully addresses the inherent complexities of topics as eclectic as incarceration, home renovations, gentrification, the crip walk, pimping, and the rise of the MAGA movement, approaching them through various Black perspectives, including husband, father, teacher, and writer. The collection’s overarching theme is captured in the titular essay, which examines the culture of heroic action African Americans created in response to their enslavement and oppression, giving proof to Albert Murray’s observation that the “fire in the forging process . . . for all its violence, does not destroy the metal that becomes the sword.”

Most of the 2.5 million graduate students in the U.S. are in programs designed for a career in academics. But the unspoken truth is that less than five percent will realize their dream of becoming a professor. The rest have little idea how to begin making a living in the business world. Life After Grad School is for students in all academic disciplines, with or without a Ph.D. This book illuminates the transition from academia to a satisfying and well-paying job with a company, government agency, or not-for-profit organization. Realistic and reassuring, it helps students structure their decision about leaving academics, and orients them to the culture of business. Readers learn how to adapt the knowledge and skills developed in grad school for business applications. Written for intelligent, mature students, the book provides practical tools and generates the confidence to find fulfilling alternative careers. Jerald Jellison, an authority on personal change, presents a clear, concrete roadmap that thoughtfully explains how to: identify "good" starter jobs, move from a CV to a compelling resume, present academic experience as a plus to interviewers, find businesses that are compatible with graduate training, and much, much more. He illustrates how to craft a winning "elevator pitch" (a quick way to advance your cause with business people), create a contact network, locate free job search resources, search and apply for jobs, and handle difficult interview questions. The book includes advice on landing a job, negotiating an optimal work agreement, and positioning yourself for future career advances. The only such book in print, Life After Grad School provides invaluable guidance for graduate students facing this most challenging career move.
Author Jerald Schiff presents a framework within which charitable behavior can be understood from an economist's viewpoint. He stresses the impact of various government fiscal policies on charitable giving, an issue of increasing importance in light of social welfare spending cuts and the Tax Reform Act of 1986.The book begins with an introduction of the issues involved and an explanation of how an economic analysis differs from that of other disciplines. Chapter 2 introduces the basic model of giving employed throughout the book. Using this model, he describes conditions under which government spending will crowd out, or reduce, charitable giving. This analysis is then extended in several different directions in the balance of the book. First, Schiff considers the implications of the fact that much government spending is funneled through charitable organizations, arguing that government support for charities may actually encourage donations. Contending that donors often have poor information about the activities of charities, he analyzes soliciting by charities. Next, the author models the behavior of volunteers, arguing that money and time are often given for very different reasons and so may respond to policy changes in different ways. He offers several alternative explanations for volunteering. These several hypotheses are then tested against data from the National Survey of Philanthropy. The use of time series data from 1930-86 examines the historical relationship between government spending and money donations. In conclusion, the author considers likely future trends in the charitable sector. This book will interest economists and other social scientists working in the areas of charitable giving and the nonprofit sector and public finance. Practitioners--lawyers and fundraisers--in the nonprofit sector will also find this book required reading.

This book is intended as a thoughtful extension to Bachman et al.'s well-received monograph Smoking, Drinking, and Drug Use in Young Adulthood. That volume showed that the new freedoms of young adulthood lead to increases in substance use, while the responsibilities of adulthood--marriage, pregnancy, parenthood--contribute to declines in substance use. The Decline of Substance Use in Young Adulthood examines how the changes in social and religious experiences and in attitudes toward substance use observed among young adults are related to changes in substance use, family transitions, living arrangements, college experience, and employment. The research uses a variety of analysis techniques and is based on the nationwide Monitoring the Future surveys of more than 38,000 young people followed from high school into adulthood. The research covers the last quarter of the 20th century, a period when drug use and views about drugs underwent many important changes. In spite of these shifts, the overall patterns of relationships reported in this book are impressive in their consistency across time and in their general similarity for men and women.Specific questions addressed include the following: *As young adults experience new freedoms and responsibilities, do their attitudes about drugs change? *Do their religious views and behaviors shift? *Do their new freedoms and responsibilities affect the amount of time they spend in social activities, including going to parties and bars? *And how are any of these changes linked to changes in cigarette use, alcohol use, marijuana use, and cocaine use?
