This volume profiles a dozen British men and women, who, for varying reasons, opposed the policy of the British government towards its 13 colonies before and during the American Revolution. Their actions helped prepare the way for the recognition of the United States as an independent nation.

This Oxford Handbook offers a comprehensive and authoritative review of important developments in computational and mathematical psychology. With chapters written by leading scientists across a variety of subdisciplines, it examines the field's influence on related research areas such as cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, clinical psychology, and neuroscience. The Handbook emphasizes examples and applications of the latest research, and will appeal to readers possessing various levels of modeling experience. The Oxford Handbook of Computational and mathematical Psychology covers the key developments in elementary cognitive mechanisms (signal detection, information processing, reinforcement learning), basic cognitive skills (perceptual judgment, categorization, episodic memory), higher-level cognition (Bayesian cognition, decision making, semantic memory, shape perception), modeling tools (Bayesian estimation and other new model comparison methods), and emerging new directions in computation and mathematical psychology (neurocognitive modeling, applications to clinical psychology, quantum cognition). The Handbook would make an ideal graduate-level textbook for courses in computational and mathematical psychology. Readers ranging from advanced undergraduates to experienced faculty members and researchers in virtually any area of psychology--including cognitive science and related social and behavioral sciences such as consumer behavior and communication--will find the text useful.
"For its intelligence and humanitarian achievements, for its political honesty, for its power and its beauty (there is no other word), this book deserves to be called a masterpiece." —American Ethnologist Jerome R. Mintz's classic study of the lives of Andalusian campesinos who were swept up by one of the 20th century's pivotal social movements provided a new framework for understanding the tragic events that tilted Spain toward civil war. In a new foreword, James W. Fernandez reflects on the fieldwork that led to the book and its contribution to subsequent developments in the ethnography of Europe and the historiography of modern Spain.
New Horizons in Natural Gas Deregulation
Jerome R. Ellig; Joseph P. Kalt
Praeger Publishers Inc
1996
sidottu
In the natural gas industry, competition and contracting are gradually replacing monopoly and regulation. In this volume, many leading economists who follow the gas industry present their views on current and future industry trends. To help regulators and industry leaders better understand these changes and to reform regulation, the authors apply economic theories of contestable markets, public choice, transaction costs and dynamic entrepreneurship to the gas industry. The issues addressed in this work are crucial, not just for the gas industry, but for all industries that have traditionally been treated as regulated monopolies.
First published in 1986. Self-direction is a simple idea, yet its delivery and administration raise many complex issues. To what extent does a bank or thrift offering securities products within the self-directed IRA take on an investment advice liability? How should the self-directed IRA be constructed? The product mix offered may have to be structured to reflect varying retirement savings strategies as well as customer preference for the degree of risk/reward acceptable in this portfolio investment The contributors to this book, who include bankers, consultants, and trust officers, as well as traditional competitors from the securities and financial planning industries, discuss the spectrum of issues affecting the self-directed account and trust administration.
In this engrossing social history of the New York Hasidic community based on extensive interviews, observation, newspaper files, and court records, Jerome Mintz combines historical study with tenacious investigation to provide a vivid account of social and religious dynamics. Hasidic People takes the reader from the various neighborhood settlements through years of growth to today’s tragic incidents and conflicts. In an engaging style, rich with personal insight, Mintz invites us into this old world within the new, a way of life at once foreign and yet intrinsic to the American experience.
Cognitive Modeling is the first book to provide students with an easy-to understand introduction to the basic methods used to build and test cognitive models. Authors Jerome R. Busemeyer and Adele Diederich answer many of the questions that researchers face when beginning work on cognitive models, such as the following: What makes a cognitive model different from conceptual or statistical models? How do you develop such a model? How can you derive qualitatively different predictions between two cognitive models? Focusing on a few key representations, the authors introduce a basic problem in each chapter, illustrate the concept with three examples, and end with a summary of general principles, making this book by far the most accessible cognitive modeling book on the market. Key Features Emphasizes modeling by presenting the tools needed to build a cognitive model, rather than simply reviewing existing models of cognition Provides tutorial presentations of psychological, mathematical, statistical, and computational methods used in all areas of cognitive modeling Includes detailed examples applied to real cognitive models published in the literature in a variety of areas, including recognition, categorization, decision making, and learning Stresses the importance of designing the right conditions for evaluating models Addresses the issues of individual differences in cognitive modeling head-on Cognitive Modeling is ideal for students and researchers across the various domains of cognitive sciences, including perception, learning, decision making, and inference. It is intended for use in upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses such as Cognition/Cognitive Modeling, Cognitive Science, Cognitive Psychology, Quantitative Methods, and Mathematical Modeling in Psychology.
"Concentrating on the colonization of the Americas and cultural development, this volume examines how the historically tense relationship between Spain and England affects North American society today. The politics of conquest and the concept of nativismare discussed. The behavioral and ethical manifestations of prejudice are examined with specific emphasis on how they apply to today's political landscape"--Provided by publisher.
This book features biographies of 32 of the most notable figures in Latin American history. To the 23 individuals from the first edition, consisting mostly of revolutionary, political, and military figures of the past, are added nine new biographies of contemporary Latin American presidents, providing an updated view of the region's leadership. Several patterns run through the individual biographies. The concept of native identity is an important aspect in the stories of Malinche, Juarez, Sandino, and Zapata--profoundly affecting the politics of modern Brazil, Mexico, and Nicaragua. One also sees a continuing compulsion to rebel against overwhelming odds in the cases of Manuela Saenz, Che Guevara and Daniel Ortega.

Quantum Models of Cognition and Decision, Second Edition presents a fully updated and expanded version of this innovative and path-breaking text. It offers an accessible introduction to the intersection of quantum theory and cognitive science, covering new insights, modelling techniques, and applications for understanding human cognition and decision making. In it, Busemeyer and Bruza delve into such topics as the non-commutative nature of judgments, quantum interference as a general principle governing human decision making, contextuality in modelling human cognition, and thought-provoking speculation about what a quantum approach to cognition might reveal about the ultimate nature of the human mind. Additions include new material on measurement, open systems, and applications to computer science. Requiring no prior background in quantum physics, this book comes complete with a tutorial and fully worked-out applications in important areas of cognition and decision.

Quantum Models of Cognition and Decision

Much of our understanding of human thinking is based on probabilistic models. This innovative book by Jerome R. Busemeyer and Peter D. Bruza argues that, actually, the underlying mathematical structures from quantum theory provide a much better account of human thinking than traditional models. They introduce the foundations for modeling probabilistic-dynamic systems using two aspects of quantum theory. The first, 'contextuality', is a way to understand interference effects found with inferences and decisions under conditions of uncertainty. The second, 'quantum entanglement', allows cognitive phenomena to be modeled in non-reductionist ways. Employing these principles drawn from quantum theory allows us to view human cognition and decision in a totally new light. Introducing the basic principles in an easy-to-follow way, this book does not assume a physics background or a quantum brain and comes complete with a tutorial and fully worked-out applications in important areas of cognition and decision.
