Students of the Civil War know Franklin, Tennessee, for the major battle that happened here, but there is a lot more to the story. In fact, Main Street in Franklin is a glimpse into 250 years of history. Within a few blocks surrounding the public square, some of the city's original buildings now house the newest and most popular shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues in Middle Tennessee. Franklin has been a center for agriculture and manufacturing. It is a place where families can enjoy small-town life on the interstate. It is home to a college. It has always been the seat of Williamson County. Franklin's small businesses have a habit of sticking around for decades, often passing through generations of the same family. Franklin is as quaint and picturesque as it is exciting and progressive, because it continues to attract the kind of people who have always made it that way.

In the late nineteenth century, Jefferson County, Missouri, was striving to emulate its cosmopolitan cousin to the north, St. Louis, while it battled to wipe out the remnants of its frontier lawlessness. The West was truly wild all the way back to the Mississippi River, and while progressive St. Louisans were installing telephones, the sheriff in Hillsboro was trying to find out who was stealing all of the pigs. One of the last of the bad men in Missouri was Mack Marsden. For over three years he was suspected of every major crime in Jefferson County. Though the newspapers labeled him a desperado, he was tried only once and never convicted of any wrongdoing. When he was ambushed, shotgunned, and left dying on a dusty road, his life became even more mysterious. Who murdered him? And if Mack wasn’t the desperado behind all those crimes, who was? For the first time, all of the available resources, including oral histories, are mined for the clues that answer these questions and more. This narrative nonfiction book is a true mystery that bears striking parallels to the life of Missourian Jesse James—and is as thrilling as any of the more famous tales of the Old West.

From the Mormon Wars to the Border Wars to gangs of Bald Knobbers and Bushwhackers, Missouri's reign of vigilante justice during the nineteenth century is unparalleled by any other state in the nation. Situated as the Gateway to the West, Missouri experienced an influx of new cultures, races, and political factions, while already home to a population of patriotic war veterans. The state marked the boundary of eastern civilization and was a stronghold of fierce independence, bordered by Bloody Kansas and Native American territories. With new lands opening for settlement, and a fledgling system of law enforcement, the people themselves were compelled to invent laws and punish transgressors. Lawmen opposed vigilantes but at times were forced to cooperate with them and adopt their methods. Missouri spawned countless stories of individual and mob violence that finally ended at the turn of the century with advancing technology and the people's enduring insistence on decency and peace. Necessary Evil is the first book to chronicle the implications of vigilantism in Missouri, ultimately showing that the state could never have been settled without a healthy dose of rebel justice. Packed with stories of popular gunslingers such as Wyatt Earp, Wild Bill Hickok, and Jesse James, this action-filled read will be of interest to crime enthusiasts and historians alike.

In early January 1904, a reporter from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch traveled to Oklahoma City to meet with a washed-up relic of the Wild West: Edward Capehart O'Kelley. On the dusty streets of the former Indian Territory, O'Kelley struggled to stay sober and describe his childhood friend, the outlaw Jesse James, to the reporter. O'Kelley once had the opportunity to join his gang, but declined in order to set out for a career as lawman in Colorado, where his violent tactics earned him the reputation of a man with a quick temper, a ready gun, and a penchant for bending the law to suit his needs. It was there, in Creede, Colorado, that O'Kelley met-and murdered-Robert Ford. Ford was known all across the frontier as the assassin of Jesse James. When they met in Colorado, O'Kelley viewed Ford as the worst kind of vermin and was egged on by local miners to avenge his old friend Jesse James's death. Imprisoned for the murder, O'Kelley emerged ten years later a broken man, entering a modern world of telephones and streetcars-a world where people no longer cared about his Wild West exploits. It was there, on the whiskey-drenched backstreets of Oklahoma City, that the Post-Dispatch reporter found him, and where on the night before their last meeting, a drunken O'Kelley was killed in a prolonged street shootout with a brave policeman. It Ends Here by Joe Johnston draws on the reporter's accounts to tell O'Kelley's tragic story. The third in the Missouri Vigilantes series, the book unravels a circular tale of frontier vigilantism and ponders America's progress beyond it. An engaging narrative touching on bank robberies, Butch Cassidy, and elaborate tales of frontier justice, this book will delight true crime enthusiasts and students of history alike.

Ever have that shiver run down your spine just before something was going to happen. That feeling just woke me from the usual daze of scanning the instruments and the ever graying sky outside in the cold winter sky. I don't know about you, but I have learned by hard experience that when this happens, watch out. It's often said that the sea is unforgiving of mistakes, so too it is of the sky. In the unforgiving sky a calm day may suddenly become a maelstrom striving to swat the people in the small tube who's arrogance took them into the air. The Lonely Hours is a tale of the decisions which must be made when the tigress awakens to play with the small mouse which dared invade it's territory. Memory is a funny thing. Sometimes the past is so distant, but when things conspire just right, yesterday can be as clear and vibrant as if all of the years have fallen away and the engines drone once again as those Lonely Hours require once again the hard decisions be made once again.

This book has been written to nurture awareness of "self," identity development, self-esteem, and the difference between our "PURPOSE" and our "DREAMS".
