MacNeil also describes his early years in a Gaelic-speaking rural community, where story-telling is still a basic element of community life. He explains how he learned the tales and the customs and practices associated with their telling. He also introduces us to the families and individuals who were custodians of the tales. John Shaw's introduction outlines the informant's tradition and its place in the world of the European story-teller. The commentaries of MacNeil and Shaw, the tales, the games, and the other folk material offer a rich and unique perspective on the Gaelic culture generally, and as it has developed on Cape Breton Island in particular.

It's a cold December night and Fancy, the Stegner family's cow, is about to give birth. Out pops Little Joe, a huge bull calf, and with him comes nine-year-old Eli's first chance to raise an animal to show at next fall's county fair. Over the next ten months, Eli, and Little Joe, learn some hard lessons about growing up and what it means to take on bigger responsibilities, especially when it comes to taking care of another living thing. But one thing Eli is trying not to think about is what will happen to Little Joe after the fair: it's auction time, and he'll have to sell Little Joe In this appealing and heartwarming story that's reminiscent of James Herriot's books, Eli comes to terms with some of the realities of life on his family's farm, and in the outside world, as he raises his first bull calf for competition. Told in a straightforward and appealing text, brimming with lush details about the natural world of the farm, and with characters that are sure to appeal to readers, Eli's story is one that may not be familiar to every kid, but the themes of growing up and learning some difficult lessons will appeal to kids and adults alike.

Originally conceived as a companion to the groundbreaking 2011 3-disc DVD set of the same name, this book combines astonishingly detailed musical transcriptions, historical writing, instructional text, and a beautiful collection of photographs to create a book that every drummer and every fan of Neil and Rush will want to add to their collection. At the heart of the book are note-for-note musical transcriptions of 17 songs that are included on the "Taking Center Stage DVD". These transcriptions are exclusive to this book, since they are taken from the performances on the DVD, documenting how Neil currently approaches the songs. Some of the tracks included are "Tom Sawyer", "Red Barchetta", "The Spirit of Radio", "Free Will", "Subdivisions", "Time Stand Still", "Marathon", "La Villa Strangiato", "The Trees", "Caravan", "BU2B", "Far Cry", and many others. But this is much more than a mere transcription book. The book is divided into chapters corresponding to each and every Rush tour from the time Neil joined the band in 1975, up to the present. Each of these chapters contains extensive text discussing the musical approach of the band at the time, the construction of the drum parts, and Neil's set up. Accompanying this are exquisitely detailed diagrams of each of Neil's drumsets, produced after extensive research into the exact instruments that were used on every tour. Tying everything together is a beautiful collection of dozens of photographs taken over the past 30 years, including exclusive shots from the archives of Fin Costello and Andrew McNauhgtan, which show Neil and his drums in vivid detail. The book also contains color reproductions of just about every drum company advertisement that featured Neil during his career. Written, transcribed, and researched by well-known drummer, author, and educator Joe Bergamini (who also co-produced and appeared in the DVD), and overseen and edited by Neil himself, "Taking Center Stage: A Lifetime of Live Performance" is the most complete, accurate, and definitive work on Neil Peart's career as a drummer.
Just an Average American Joe Vs. the World
Joe was just your average, ordinary guy. He always knew that he was one lucky individual to having had beat the odds of being born in the greatest country on the planet. Out of the more than 30 million births, in the year of Joe, only 4 million were fortunate to have been born in America and, thank God, half of them were girls. Joe came to learn that he lived in the home of the free because of the brave that came before him, like his hard-charging Marine Corps Dad. He greatly appreciated that the Constitution of the United States afforded him certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. He fully understood that this happiness was not a guarantee but he was welcome to pursue it. Joe grew up with an All-American work ethic that promised: if you rolled up your sleeves and worked hard, there was nothing you could not accomplish. The Constitution is one of the all-time greatest documents of all time but it did not make any promises that there would be no obstacles or pain along the road for your pursuit of that dream of happiness. Joe knew first hand what blood, sweat, and tears meant. He never looked for a participation trophy and realized, at a young age, that he was not entitled to anything he didn't work for. He was willing to go full bore towards his goals and meet obstacles head on, which never were in short supply. He never went out looking for trouble but it always managed to find him. This is the story of an average American Joe verses the world as he encountered extraordinary experiences.
