This volume explores a range of topics during a turbulent period in British history, with particular emphasis on political change and popular piety. On the eve of the Reformation, religious beliefs were shaped by a church which was falling under the growing control of the state, and by responses to England's one and only heretical movement, Lollardy. In political life, gradual disengagement from a cross-Channel political world was followed by civil war and the eventual rise of a strong Tudor monarchy. As this volume demonstrates in a number of ways, the impact of many of these macro changes was felt across the British Isles, not just in England. But the studies presented here frequently explore major change through the experience of the middling sort: the gentry active in local government, the English merchants and Scottish immigrants making important life choices in major cities, or the industrious clerics charged with the routine administration of the church. By looking at the case studies of these men in more detail, we begin to appreciate that even in this age of great change, there were profound continuities which carried through into the sixteenth century. Along the way, too, new light is thrown on the authorship, date and redaction of texts which continue to shape our understanding of late medieval British history.

This book, originally published in 1980, examines the history of the papacy in the century between the end of the Great Schism and the start of the Reformation, and considers how, and at what price, the popes were able to re-establish their power after the troubles of the years from 1378 to 1417. The author approaches the subject analytically rather than chronologically, covering such themes as theories of authority in the late Middle Ages, the problems of papal government and the potential areas of conflict between the popes and the secular princes. By concentrating on the period before 1517, the author stresses the importance of seeing the fifteenth century Church as the product of the conciliar crisis rather than as the cause of the Reformation although he suggests that the concession made by the papacy in this period created the political situation which made possible the divisions of Christendom in the sixteenth century. This work will be of interest to historians of the late medieval and early modern period, particularly those specialising in conciliar thought and Church history.

Setting a goal to read and study the whole Bible, let alone the New Testament by its self, may seem daunting and an impossible challenge. Christ's teachings focused on love: "Love one another as I have loved you" and "Do unto others as you would have them do to you". When Jesus was asked which of the Ten Commandments the greatest commandment is, He replies, "You will love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with your entire mind; this is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it, you will love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets". While reading His words, let us focus on what He says. Do we truly live as He taught? Do we follow in His footsteps? The word "Christian" means "Follower of Christ". Let's learn what He taught us and then follow what He said. The world is watching us; it was once said by Mahatma Gandhi that if India would ever truly become a Christian nation, it would be because of the Christ of the Christians and not because of the Christians of the Christ. Christians today have not left the greatest impression on the world. Let's be true followers of Christ and live by His words. Only then will the world know what a Christian truly is. As the song says, "They will know we are Christians by our love." Read carefully His words and then study the context in which He was speaking. Review the questions carefully and answer them as honestly as you can. Enjoy your study of Christ's words.
