Emerging Trends in Drug Use and Distribution

Emerging Trends in Drug Use and Distribution

This Brief explores emerging trends in drug use and distribution. This timely Brief examines recent examples of emerging drugs including salvia (from the plant Salvia divinorum), bath salts (and other synthetic stimulants) and so-called research chemicals (primarily substituted phenethylamines, synthetic cousins of ecstasy), which have tended to receive brief levels of high intensity media coverage that may or may not reflect an actual increase in their usage. Over the past decade in particular, “new” substances being used recreationally seem to come out of obscurity and gain rapid popularity, particularly spurred on by discussion and distribution over the internet. While changing trends in the drug market have always presented a challenge for law enforcement and public health officials, online forums, media coverage and other recent trends discussed in this Brief allow them to gain popularity more quickly and change more frequently. These rapid shifts allow less time for researchers to understand the potential health consequences of these substances and for law enforcement to stay abreast of abuses of legal substances. This work includes: 1) review of relevant research and literature, 2) review the Internet sources in which many deem important in influencing the emerging drug market, 3) discussion of national and international trends in use, abuse and distribution of these substances and 4) examination of current drug policy and recommendations for the future. This brief will be useful for criminology and criminal justice, sociology and public health. It will also be useful for those that deal with youth and the problems that may develop during adolescence and early adulthood.
How to Speak Hockey

How to Speak Hockey

For those who grew up around hockey, it's easy to understand a sentence like, He let loose a howitzer from the hash marks, roofing the puck past the stunned netminder. But for those who have no idea what that means, How to Speak Hockey provides a unique look into Canada's unofficial third language. Even lifelong lovers of the game might just learn a thing or two: - Many hockey fans know about the five hole, but few know that there are seven holes in total - Before the humble rubber puck, people used strange round balls called road apples - Learn the strange and unique origins of common phrases including stood on his head and hat trick - Find out exactly what is meant when a player dipsy doodles through traffic and breaks the ice - In hockey, sometimes a hot dog is not just something you get at the concession stand - Fighting has always been a part of hockey, so it's not surprising that there are so many words to describe it, from a word as innocent as dance to the biggest fight in hockey the bench-clearing brawl. For all those wannabe hockeyists or lifelong rink rats out there, game on!

To support this effort, RAND researchers explore the feasibility of Australia sustaining a domestic naval shipbuilding industry compared with buying ships from foreign shipbuilders. The authors outline the complex consequences and trade-offs of both options.

Over the last two decades, there has been increased interest in the distribution of crime and other antisocial behavior at lower levels of geography. The focus on micro geography and its contribution to the understanding and prevention of crime has been called the 'criminology of place'. It pushes scholars to examine small geographic areas within cities, often as small as addresses or street segments, for their contribution to crime. Here, the authors describe what is known about crime and place, providing the most up-to-date and comprehensive review available. Place Matters shows that the study of criminology of place should be a central focus of criminology in the twenty-first century. It creates a tremendous opportunity for advancing our understanding of crime, and for addressing it. The book brings together eighteen top scholars in criminology and place to provide comprehensive research expanding across different themes.
