An Economist's Outlook: Essays by John H. Makin from a Transformative Era
John Makin experienced and wrote persuasively about many of the most important economic events of the post–Cold War period. A University of Chicago–trained economist, Makin brought to his writing the benefits of academe, domestic public- and private-sector experience, and close observation of international economic developments. An Economist’s Outlook: Essays by John H. Makin from a Transformative Era brings together some of his most important writings. They provide unique insights into economic events from 1992 to 2014, a tumultuous, transformative period beginning with the end of the Cold War. This collection begins with a look at fundamentals of economic policy, exploring concepts such as inflation, disinflation, and deflation. The second section applies Makin’s keen understanding to events in the US and abroad, with particular emphasis on Japan’s economic experience, the tech and housing bubbles, and the financial crash. Makin was an important voice on economic issues in the think tank and policy worlds. His perspective was always independent, earning him widespread respect across the political spectrum. This collection is an invaluable guide for both the beginner who wants to understand economic history, concepts, and policymaking and the seasoned expert who will appreciate Makin’s impressive range and always thoughtful perspective on a transformative economic period.

The Secret of the Kingdom of God: Making Sense of the Kingdom by Grasping Its Different Aspects.
"The Secret of the Kingdom of God" is a systematic and comprehensive view of the Kingdom of God which introduces a coherent and unifying model, organized around the aspects of the Kingdom found in Scripture. It provides a working definition of the Kingdom and offers abundant cross-referencing of Bible verses throughout. This is not just another book on the Kingdom of God. How is it different? Most Christian books on the Kingdom focus on a particular aspect such as the Millennium; or on a certain portion of the Kingdom, as seen in the Gospel of Matthew, for example. Authors who do cover more ground usually fail to present a systematic and more comprehensive view. The reader generally comes away with a handful of confusing loose ends and without a working knowledge of how it all comes together. "The Secret of the Kingdom of God" answers questions about the nature of the Kingdom, how to enter the Kingdom, why studying this subject is so important, and much more. Finally, a book about the Kingdom of God that brings all the different aspects together in one volume A book that helps the reader fit the pieces together, stand back and see the big picture. It's time every believer become well-acquainted with this subject since the Kingdom of God is the central theme of the Bible and has everything to do with who we are, where we came from and where we are going.
Luigi: The Making and the Meaning

Luigi: The Making and the Meaning

John H. Richardson

The first book to explain why the world was primed for the Luigi Mangione moment, showing the history that led him to be embraced as an avenger with an affection not seen since Jesse James or Robin Hood. The explosion of glee and sympathy for Luigi surprised everyone, but it was everywhere. Hours after the shooting of the United Healthcare executive, his company put out a message out on Facebook saying their "hearts go out to Brian's family and all who were close to him." People replied with laughing emojis and comments like this one: "No one here is the judge of who deserves to live or die. That's the job of the AI algorithm the insurance company designed to maximize profits on your health." On TikTok, another commentator said, "Oh my god, y'all really raised the school shooter generation and now you're asking us for sympathy?" she asks. "Welcome to a regular Tuesday at school in America." When he was arrested, TikTok exploded with more love for Luigi: "They could've been more gentle with him, he has back problems," said one commentator. Others attempted to come to his rescue. "He is innocent, he was with me the whole time." EBay said that while it had a policy prohibiting items that glorify violence, they were allowing the sale of items with the words "deny defend depose." In Seattle, someone reprogrammed a couple of electric highway signs so they flashed: "One CEO down...many more to go." So where is all this coming from? Richardson has tracked the building blocks of this widespread alienation for three decades, finding it across not only the environmental movement but among those who reject capitalism itself, including the rules that govern everything from insurance to healthcare. He has followed the men and women who have gone to extremes to express that alienation, and studied the inspirations they found in other outlaws, most especially Ted Kaczynski (Luigi had posted a review of Kaczynski's manifesto on Goodreads). The result is a book that will put Luigi in context and even illuminate how his appeal is likely to play out in the future.
The Making of Lay Religion in Southern France, c. 1000-1350
What was Christianity like for ordinary people between the turn of the millennium and the coming of the Black Death? What changed and what continued, in their experiences, habits, feelings, hopes, and fears? How did they know themselves to be Christians, and indeed to be good Christians? This book answers those questions through a focus on one specific region -- southern France -- across a particularly fraught period of history, one beset by the changes wrought by the Gregorian reforms, the spectre of heresy, the violence of crusade, the coming of inquisition, and the pastoral revolution associated with the Fourth Lateran Council (1215). Using an array of different historical documents, John H. Arnold explores the material contexts of Christian worship from the eleventh through to the fourteenth centuries, the shifting episcopal expectations of the ordinary laity, the changes wrought through wider socioeconomic developments, and periods of sharp inflection brought by the Albigensian crusade and its aftermath. Throughout, the book explores the complex spectrum of lay piety, finding enthusiasms and doubts, faith and scepticism, agency and negotiation. It explores not just developments in the content of faith for the laity but the very dynamics of belief as a lived experience. We are shown how across these key centuries Christianity developed in its external practices, but also via inculcating a more interiorized and affective mode of belief; and thus, it is argued, it can be said to have become truly a 'religion' -- a structured, demanding, and rewarding faith -- for the many and not just the few.

When we get in a problem situation, we often keep making the same mistake over and over again. Sometimes, the problem itself is repeating a remedy that never works. It's a broken record or a hamster running in a wheel that keeps going around and around and gets nowhere. This book is about ways to change the game, to get on track and unstuck. William Glasser, Phoebe Prosky, David Baum, Joan Barth, Michael Hoyt, airline pilot Doug Doherty and about thirty others share their lives and experiences in "Making the Impossible Difficult: Tools for Getting Unstuck . The editors and writers invite you to share their struggles, triumphs, and experiences in this anthology of poems, illustrations, stories, and essays. Some are short, some long; some require thinking, others are for drinking in. Here there are examples of tools for getting unstuck from the troubles that beset us all.
The Making of a Sociologist

The Making of a Sociologist

John H. Goldthorpe

This book offers a journey through the problems and the progress of the discipline of sociology in the UK and Europe throughout the second half of the twentieth century via an exploration of seven social settings from the life of a now eminent sociologist. It conceptualises the complex relation that exists between being and knowing, and between the personal knowledge that comes from lived experience and the essentially impersonal knowledge that any science seeks to pursue. The seven – very contrasting – settings are described in detail, together with reference to some of their leading personalities, such as David Glass, Karl Popper, Norbert Elias, Sebastian Sprott, Richard Hoggart, Noel Annan, E. M. Forster, Gösta Rehn, Chelly Halsey, Fred Hirsch and Jürgen Habermas. In each case, the author shows how his lived experience within these settings formed a substratum of his sociology and how he navigated the line between personal knowledge as a creative resource and personal knowledge as potential bias using methodological discipline. It will ultimately appeal to those with interests in sociology, philosophy of science, sociological histories, and biographical methods.

Can You See God in This Picture?: A Letter to My Sons Making Sense of 25 Years of Ministry
Growing up in the church often lacks the beauty and meaning that God envisioned. John King's ministry as a pastor and teacher spanned the years from 1969 to 1993. He and his family moved 17 times in those years, and pastored in five churches, once even moving several times while at the same church. Occasionally down to the last jar of peanut butter, faith played a real part in their spiritual journey. And then there were the children. With nary a negative word for the adults, Can You See God in This Picture? tells the story of what passion for God can accomplish, both constructively and destructively, and explores the angry and stupid things adults do in the church, which children see and remember. Written as a letter to his three sons, and with many personal admissions and anecdotes, this memoir has the potential to bless any whose faith has been tested, perhaps even destroyed, through church power struggles, theological bickering, political infighting, and all the other things that burn out even the good pastors and sometimes even force them out of the pulpit. Pastor King was known in Western Pennsylvania for his knowledge of Koine Greek and Classical Hebrew, having taught in Western PA Bible Institute in Butler, The Lighthouse Ministry in Washington, and Faith Seminary in Bethel Park, PA in the 1970's. He also taught at the Charismatic Conference in 1979 at Duquesne University. He graduated from a four year ministerial program at Northeast Bible College, which is now Valley Forge Christian College, and later returned to complete a course of study for a B.S. in Bible. In 1982, he received a Master of Bible Theology from the International Bible Institute & Seminary. Currently retired from the pastorate, he develops computer software at a financial- services firm in Boston and lives with his wife in their townhouse in a nearby town. He occasionally speaks at area churches, including the one he regularly attends, and he still harbors the dream of someday perhaps returning to professional ministry.

""Central and Flexible Staging: A New Theater in the Making"" is a book written by Walden Philip Boyle that explores the concept of a new type of theater staging that combines the traditional central stage with a flexible, adaptable design. The book delves into the history of theater staging, from ancient Greek amphitheaters to modern-day theaters, and analyzes the advantages and limitations of each design. Boyle proposes a new approach to theater staging that combines the best of both worlds - a central stage that provides a focal point for the audience, and a flexible design that allows for a range of staging options and creative possibilities. The book includes detailed diagrams and illustrations that showcase the proposed design, as well as examples of how it could be implemented in practice.Throughout the book, Boyle also discusses the role of technology in modern theater, and how it can be used to enhance the audience experience and create new possibilities for staging. He also explores the potential impact of this new staging design on theater productions, from the creative process to the audience experience.Overall, ""Central and Flexible Staging: A New Theater in the Making"" is a thought-provoking book that offers a fresh perspective on theater staging and its potential for innovation. It is a must-read for anyone interested in theater design, technology, and the future of the performing arts. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Crime in the Making

Crime in the Making

Harvard University Press

This new explanation of crime over the life course provides an important foundation for rethinking contemporary theory and criminal justice policy. It is based on the reanalysis of a classic set of data: Unraveling Juvenile Delinquency, Sheldon and Eleanor Gluecks’ mid-twentieth-century study of 500 delinquents and 500 nondelinquents from childhood to adulthood. Several years ago, Robert Sampson and John Laub dusted off sixty cartons of the Gleucks’ data that had been stored in the basement of the Harvard Law School. After a lengthy process of recoding and reanalyzing these data, they developed and tested a theory of informal social control that acknowledges the importance of childhood behavior but rejects the implication that adult social factors have little relevance.
