John Harden Lushbough wrote his memoirs in 1939 and described growing up in the late 1800s with his parents and siblings. He is a delightful storyteller, with a sense of humor. The family moved often - to Illinois, Kansas, and Iowa - trying to find good farmland. He described his schools, farm life, and encounters with rattlesnakes and other critters in colorful detail. His exploits included shooting chickens, hunting geese, and fishing for eels. As a young man, J.H. was noted for being one of the best with a thrashing machine. He traveled from farm to farm working with the crews to harvest wheat and other grain crops. He was very poor and did many odd jobs to make money, including chopping fire wood, taming mules, cutting ice, and digging up graves in a cemetery. He writes of his early years with his wife Gertie and living in Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, South Dakota and Nebraska.
Back in the day, before mechanization, there was seemingly no shortage of hired hands. It was a time before the persistent admonition to stay in school if you don't want to dig ditches for a living had become dogma. But these things wouldn't have mattered to Teddy Walker anyway as he really didn't have a choice. From afar, the na ve person who knew only that Teddy Walker had lived and worked on ranches for a large part of his life might get the romantic notion that it had been all peaches and cream. They might erroneously equate rural solitude and nature with happiness. Granted, not all hired hands had a past like Teddy Walker's. There'd been good times, but they did not last. Their demise had left Teddy with a skepticism of what life held for him that he occasionally tempered with Olympia beer. So far, that approach to life had proven itself to be pretty much justified. And in spite of everything that had happened, life had been tolerable, until now. Damn the bad luck.
Hard Times is the story of two people beginning a new life as homesteaders in eastern Montana during the year 1929. One of them, Phil Caldwell, is committed to this adventure, the other, his wife Martha, is not. Nonetheless, they go from their relatively comfortable city life to the desolation and loneliness of a one room shack far from civilization. The prospects of bettering themselves via this free government land that was to be theirs quickly fades. Life during these times was hard enough for the childless couple but subject their relationship to the unrelenting elements of the Montana plains and something was bound to give. And give it did sending Phil and Martha down a tumultuous path of uncertainty and danger.
Badger Creek is the story of a middle age man questioning where he is in life. In 23 years, Andy Yarnell has gone from being a green deputy to the sheriff of Gros Ventre County Montana. Getting to this point, however, has not been easy. Its exacted an emotional toll from having to deal with all the bad stuff in life that generally involves death or violence, or pretty much the things a person reads about in the paper and is glad they don't have to deal with, assuming they even thought about it. But now, after all these years, Andy's commitment to the job is about to be put to the ultimate test. And once again, he finds himself in the valley where he began his career.
