Divine Faith

Divine Faith

John R.T. Lamont

Ashgate Publishing Limited
2004
sidottu
Using philosophical and theological reflection, this book explores the rational grounding for Christian faith, inquiring into the basis for believing the Christian revelation, and using the answers to give an account of Christian faith itself. Setting the discussion in the context of the history of views on revelation, Divine Faith makes an original contribution to historiography and draws out hitherto unnoticed affinities between Catholic and Protestant thought. Re-examining the question from the beginning by asking how it is that the Christian revelation is made, Lamont then looks at the fundamental philosophical issues concerning the nature of knowledge and the reasonableness of belief in testimony that are crucial to an understanding of Christian belief. Through theological considerations on the relations of grace and the church, and new advances in the philosophy of belief in testimony and how God speaks to communicate the Christian religion, this book offers an original and powerful account of the nature of Christian belief.

Psychology of Pessimism

Psychology of Pessimism

Optimism and pessimism are complementary, but opposing, dispositions. In general, optimists consistently expect good outcomes and pessimists consistently expect bad outcomes. These variations in human behaviour have profound mental and physical implications. The aim of the present work is to provide an overview of the psychology of pessimism. It is composed of four sections - I: How are optimism and pessimism measured?, II: What is the relationship between optimism and pessimism?, III: What is the relationship between optimism-pessimism and health?, and IV: What are the biology and chemistry of optimism-pessimism? For various reasons, rigorous analysis of pessimism has been difficult. Nonetheless, recent advances, including the development of numerous psychological batteries, have allowed for structured, scientific investigation. Indeed, several studies have examined the medical implications and biological and chemical bases of pessimism. Nonetheless, the psychology of pessimism is imperfect and further study is needed.

This two-part literary project strives to appeal, one might say, to both lower- and upper-class taste to the extent that it combines, in the one book, two dissimilar approaches to textual structure without, however, unduly departing from its grammatical bias and the affirmation, in consequence, of a discriminatory upper-case approach (depending on class context) to terminology. Now while more people might be expected to prefer the 'prose' to the 'philosophy', irrespective of its grammatical predilections, the option on both approaches to textual presentation not only brings 'heaven' down to 'earth' but simultaneously ensures that what pertains to the former can be transmuted into the latter, transfigured, so to speak, with intent to providing the right kind of axial paradigm for any transcendence of 'the world' likely to culminate in a heavenly disposition. - A Centretruths editorial

Multi-millionaire Barton S. Balderdash is travelling to Fremont Nebraska with his new bride, the former Tizzy Ditherspoon, to establish a charity orphanage and children's hospital there. Balderdash was formerly a villain of the worst (yes worst) sort who was attempting to monopolize the rail industry by hook or crook. (Mostly crook.) During a visit to one of his many railroad acquisitions, he fell off a passenger car, striking his head severely and suffering a concussion along with complete amnesia. His long-suffering secretary Tizzy nursed Balderdash back to health and in the process fell in love with him. They were soon married, and now Tizzy and Barton spend their lives doing charity work. In their devotion to each other and their good deeds, they are completely unaware that an unscrupulous villainess named Dementia Dismal, under the alias of Dorothy Devine, is plotting to steal away their fortune Hot on her trail is Canadian detective Marcie Moonglow, who has trailed Dorothy all the way from Moose Droppings Saskatchewan. It seems Dementia is an escaped convict who was serving a long sentence there for stealing money from a widows and orphans fund.
Why the French Don't Like Headscarves

Why the French Don't Like Headscarves

John R. Bowen

Princeton University Press

The French government's 2004 decision to ban Islamic headscarves and other religious signs from public schools puzzled many observers, both because it seemed to infringe needlessly on religious freedom, and because it was hailed by many in France as an answer to a surprisingly wide range of social ills, from violence against females in poor suburbs to anti-Semitism. Why the French Don't Like Headscarves explains why headscarves on schoolgirls caused such a furor, and why the furor yielded this law. Making sense of the dramatic debate from his perspective as an American anthropologist in France at the time, John Bowen writes about everyday life and public events while also presenting interviews with officials and intellectuals, and analyzing French television programs and other media. Bowen argues that the focus on headscarves came from a century-old sensitivity to the public presence of religion in schools, feared links between public expressions of Islamic identity and radical Islam, and a media-driven frenzy that built support for a headscarf ban during 2003-2004. Although the defense of laicite (secularity) was cited as the law's major justification, politicians, intellectuals, and the media linked the scarves to more concrete social anxieties--about "communalism," political Islam, and violence toward women. Written in engaging, jargon-free prose, Why the French Don't Like Headscarves is the first comprehensive and objective analysis of this subject, in any language, and it speaks to tensions between assimilation and diversity that extend well beyond France's borders.

The God I Don't Understand

The God I Don't Understand

Christopher J. H. Wright; John R. W. Stott

Many Christians believe that they have to understand everything about their faith for that faith to be genuine. This isn't true. There are many things we don't understand about God, His Word, and His works. And this is actually one of the greatest things about the Christian faith: that there are areas of mystery that lie beyond the keenest scholarship or even the most profound spiritual exercises. Sadly, for many people these problems raise so many questions and uncertainties that faith itself becomes a struggle. But questions, and even doubts, are part of faith.Chris Wright encourages us to face the limitations of our understanding and to acknowledge the pain and grief they can often cause. In The God I Don't Understand, he focuses on four of the most mysterious subjects in the Bible and reflects upon why it's important to ask questions without having to provide the answer:The problem of evil and suffering. The genocide of the Canaanites. The cross and the crucifixion. The end of the world. "However strongly we believe in divine revelation, we must acknowledge both that God has not revealed everything and that much of what he has revealed is not plain. It is because Dr. Wright confronts biblical problems with a combination of honesty and humility that I warmly commend this book." —John Stott

Charlotte: Its Historic Neighborhoods

Charlotte: Its Historic Neighborhoods

From the city's founding until the late 1890s, four wards were created from crossing Trade and Tryon Streets which defined the residential fabric of Charlotte. The history of Charlotte is inseparable from the history of its neighborhoods. As the twentieth century approached, the Southern textile boom fueled labor and housing demands that were met by the earliest suburbs that rose out of the farms and pastures surrounding the small town. Dilworth was the first of these suburbs, connected to the town center by the city's maiden electric streetcar line. More new communities quickly followed. Some, such as Myers Park and Elizabeth, have remained strong throughout their history. North Charlotte, Belmont, and others have changed under economic and social challenges. Still others, such as Brooklyn, are gone; they survive only in the memories and photographs of the families that called them home.
