Prayer is a major biblical topic. The Bible teaches readers the nature, purposes, intentions, and practical applications of prayer in diverse circumstances and situations. The Bible presents different expressions of prayer, major examples of prayers, presuppositions of prayer, various types of prayer, God's diverse answers to different prayers in different circumstances, and nonverbal gestures about prayer. This book attempts to deal with difficult issues such as imprecation or curse prayers, address controversial biblical passages and concepts such as Ps 51 or Rom 8:26-27, and emphasize important similar connections between different biblical texts such as 1 Sam 2:1-10; Ps 113:5-9; Luke 1:46-55; 2 Sam 7:18-29; or 1 Chr 17:16-27.
Maryland Politics and Government

Maryland Politics and Government

John T. Willis; Herbert C. Smith

University of Nebraska Press
2012
pokkari
Tucked between the larger commonwealths of Pennsylvania and Virginia and overshadowed by the political maneuverings of its neighbor, Washington, D.C., Maryland has often been overlooked and neglected in studies of state governmental systems. With the publication of Maryland Politics and Government, the challenging demographic diversity, geographic variety, and dynamic Democratic pragmatism of Maryland finally get their due. Two longtime political analysts, Herbert C. Smith and John T. Willis, conduct a sustained inquiry into topics including the Maryland identity, political history, and interest groups; the three branches of state government; and policy areas such as taxation, spending, transportation, and the environment. Smith and Willis also establish a "Two Marylands" model that explains the dominance of the Maryland Democratic Party, established in the post–Civil War era, that persists to this day even in a time of political polarization. Unique in its scope, detail, and coverage, Maryland Politics and Government sets the standard for understanding the politics of the Free State (or, alternately, the Old Line State) for years to come.

At a time marked by strong demands for educational reform, the American school curriculum is a topic of special concern. This volume provides a comprehensive historical record of the evolution of the curriculum in America from the colonial period to the present day. The editors have compiled a collection of influential and representative documents in primary, secondary, and higher education in the United States. Each document is introduced by a short essay that discusses its historical context and significance. The result is a valuable chronicle of the development of the American school curriculum. The work begins with an introductory piece that overviews the development of the curriculum and surveys the most important works on curriculum history. The introduction is followed by excerpts from 34 documents representative of the school curriculum from The Rules and Course of Study of Harvard College, 1642 to the 1983 report, A Nation at Risk: The Imperative for Educational Reform. The essay that introduces each document closes with a brief bibliography, and the volume concludes with a more extensive list of sources for further reading. By consulting this reference, historians and educators can trace the development of the curriculum over the last 350 years.

On December 12, 2017, a small New York news office received an unusual email. After consulting with an expert in the field of quantum physics, the producers arranged for a meeting with the email's author, one John J. Clifton, a self-described "temporal specialist" from the year 2151.This is the story behind that incredible event. Described as an interesting blend of Arthur C. Clarke and Tom Clancy, "John J. Clifton, Temporal Specialist" recounts the story of a time traveler from the year 2151 who is stranded in the past and contacts a New York news media company. Skeptical at first, the company producers are shocked to discover Clifton is what he claims to be. While preparing to announce their extraordinary visitor to the world, however, they learn Clifton has involved them in his temporal mission; a mission that must be completed here in the past in order to preserve mankind's future.

This volume is the second edition of the first-ever elementary book on the Langevin equation method for the solution of problems involving the Brownian motion in a potential, with emphasis on modern applications in the natural sciences, electrical engineering and so on. It has been substantially enlarged to cover in a succinct manner a number of new topics, such as anomalous diffusion, continuous time random walks, stochastic resonance etc, which are of major current interest in view of the large number of disparate physical systems exhibiting these phenomena. The book has been written in such a way that all the material should be accessible to an advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate student. It draws together, in a coherent fashion, a variety of results which have hitherto been available only in the form of research papers or scattered review articles.

William Faulkner

William Faulkner

Considered by many to be the most influential US novelist the world has known, William Faulkner's roots and his writing are planted in a single obscure county in the Deep South. A foremost international modernist, Faulkner's subjects and characters, ironically, are more readily associated with the history and sociology of the most backward state in the Union. He experimented endlessly with narrative structure, developing an unorthodox writing style. Yet his main goal was to reveal the truth of "the human heart in conflict with itself," ultimately defining human nature through the lens of his own Southern experience. This comprehensive account of Faulkner's literary career features an exploration of his novels and key short stories, including The Sound and the Fury, As I Lay Dying, Absalom, Absalom!, and many more. Drawing on psychoanalytic, post-structuralist, feminist, and post-colonial theory, it offers an imaginative topography of Faulkner's efforts to reckon with his Southern past, to acknowledge its modernization, and to develop his own modernist method.
