About the book: From his own experience with the most tragic of life changing events, the loss of five siblings over the span of four years in his youth, author Jon Edward Gauthier offers others hope in finding God's love in the most trying of circumstances. For others who have suffered the loss of a loved one, or have experienced another kind of life changing event, such as a failed relationship, loss of work, addictions, injury, or a sense of hopelessness, Embracing Goodness: How Life Works reveals the interaction of God's love, free will, timelessness in heaven, and our own obligation to help others. It invites the reader to both reflect on their own life and remember miracles and revelations that reveal their own faith. Embracing Goodness: How Life Works is not only an outline for how to live a more fulfilling life, but also an insightful journey in understanding how pain and suffering lead to joy.

In 480 B.C., Xerxes I, king of the Persian Empire, led a vast and uncountable army intent on the domination of Europe. Only a tiny collection of Greek city-states stood in his path. At Thermopylae the Persians annihilated a small holding force commanded by King Leonidas of Sparta, then quickly marched on to Athens, reducing the city to ruins. Outnumbered and beset by treachery, Sparta, Athens and their allies gathered near the town of Plataea for one final battle. The future of Western civilization hung on the outcome. "In Kithairon's Shadow is the story of five men from ancient Greece and the parts they would play in determining their future, and ours.

This entertaining collection of historical photographs, amusing newspaper accounts, reminiscences and letters celebrates the capricious antics that the Rockies and Selkirks summoned in Victorian residents and visitors. From climbers, cowboys, cooks and shopkeepers to hunters, guides, photographers and poets, these were people with a mania for mountains, beauty and challenge. It led them to draw maps, take fine photographs, analyze the rocks and geological structures around them, create fine paintings and, in general, plunge into the unknown and write about their wonderful adventures. Rocky Mountain Madness offers up a miscellany of their images and writings, including accounts of occasional accomplishment, accomplished adventure, adventurous rambling and rambling discourse.

Designed to encourage critical thinking about history, the MAJOR PROBLEMS IN AMERICAN HISTORY series introduces you to both primary sources and analytical essays on important topics in U.S. history. This collection serves as the primary anthology for the introductory survey course, covering the subject’s entire chronological span. Comprehensive topical coverage includes politics, economics, labor, gender, culture, and social trends. The fourth edition has been revised to reflect two new historiographical trends: the emergence of the history of religion as an exceptionally lively field and the internationalization of American history. Several chapters include images, songs, and poems to give you a better “feel” for the time period and events under discussion. Key pedagogical elements of the Major Problems format have been retained: chapter introductions, headnotes, and suggested readings.

Rhetoric and Reality

Rhetoric and Reality

Cambridge University Press

sidottu
The number of international human rights institutions and countries participating in them has risen dramatically in recent decades, precipitating debates about why countries make such commitments and whether these commitments improve member's human rights behavior. These debates have centered on a small number of human rights treaties, with far less attention paid to the larger number of international organizations (IOs) that aim to promote human rights. The Element argues and then demonstrates that state decisions about joining these IOs depends on the institutional design of the organizations, specifically sovereignty costs for member states. These costs stem from the constraints that IOs impose and vary substantially. Emerging democracies are most likely to enter high sovereignty cost IOs. Furthermore, organizations that generate higher sovereignty costs tend to produce better human rights outcomes than those generating fewer sovereignty costs for all regimes. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.
