First Published in 1977, The Great American Desert presents a comprehensive overview of the life, history, and landscape of the American Southwest. The Great American desert encompasses the finest land, the biggest Canyon, the highest mountains, the driest deserts, the hottest valley, the oldest towns and the richest mines in the country. Its history is ancient and varied- the Aztec and Mayan civilizations, the Pueblo life, the Spanish and their influence, the Indians and the very type of Southwesterners who have taken up residence during the past century. Jon Manchip White, a Welshman, is one of the region's most recent residents. He has lived there for seven years, look stranger and grown to appreciate it with loving familiarity. He has seen beyond the subtle malignancies of civilization-the billboards, fast food places, tourist traps and the average American’s curious horror of the big outdoors. Indeed, he finds in this finely integrated account of the history and topography of a huge area of land signs that at times nature is winning the fight against man. This book ranges far beyond scenic wonders. The author is equally concerned with men who moved across this spectacular landscape, and who inhabit it now; men famous for a strange diversity of achievement-Coronado and D. H. Lawrence, Geronimo and Billy the Kid, as well as the migrants and desert dwellers of today. This fascinating book is a must read for anyone interested in America’s Southwest.

Solo Goya: Goya and the Duchess of Alba at Sanl car is a meticulously researched historical novel about the great Spanish painter Francisco Goya and his most famous patron, the 13th Duchess of Alba. The encounter between Goya and the Duchess of Alba which figures in this novel took place at Sanl car de Barrameda in the late summer of 1796, when Goya was aged 50 and the Duchess was a widow of 34. These facts and many others in this story are historically accurate, and most of the characters you will meet in this book actually lived at that time and place. But this is a novel, a work of fiction, and not a book of history. Since many of the details of Goya s life are obscure or in dispute, the goal of this book is not to prove that this detail or that actually took place, but to create a plausible and engaging narrative that brings to life the major issues and ambiance of life in late 18th century Bourbon Spain. Author Jon Manchip White is uniquely equipped to recreate the world in which Goya lived the artist s easy access to extremes of social class, the dominance of the Catholic church, and his cultural preoccupations with war, violence, religion, art and politics.
From America's most prominent political leaders and thinkers, a pathway to cut through the gridlock and make our government work."Politics doesn't have to be a zero-sum game—we are going to share the future, and so we need to find ways to work together. This is a timely book that includes thoughts on the need for and power of cooperation from some of the brightest minds in government, business and academia." —President Bill Clinton"President Clinton and I disagreed on many things, but we did agree on two very large goals—balanced budgets and welfare reform. These shared goals allowed us focus energy on bridging the gap between the parties on how to achieve these goals instead of just short term partisan fights. The result was four straight balanced budgets, paying off over $450 billion in federal debt, and bipartisan welfare reform which lifted millions out of poverty.By proposing four large goals around which to rally the country, NO LABELS: A SHARED VISION FOR A STRONGER AMERICA lays the groundwork for a return to meaningful bipartisan accomplishment in Washington once again." —Newt Gingrich, former Speaker of the House and New York Times bestselling author Every year the President of the United States stands before Congress and the American people to deliver a State of the Union Address. What was once an opportunity for honest reflection on accomplishments and goals has become more of a laundry list than a speech—a grab bag of policy ideas, partisan rhetoric, and healthy dose of wishful thinking. Meanwhile, the gridlock in Washington means that virtually nothing in that speech will amount to anything but talk. Governor Jon Huntsman and Senator Joe Manchin, two of the most respected and straightforward political leaders in America, have a simple solution for Washington's gridlock. It begins with getting our leaders together at the table to agree to goals not just for their party but for the whole country. Stop having one party led by the president paint a single vision. Instead, create a shared vision for our country to aspire to—and then find a way to achieve it together. In NO LABELS: A SHARED VISION FOR A STRONGER AMERICA, Huntsman and Manchin are joined by experts and politicians from both sides of the aisle, including well-known thought leaders from business, economics, and academia. Contributors include two former White House Chiefs of Staff; former OMB Director Alice Rivlin; Glenn Hubbard, Dean of Columbia Business School; nine members of Congress committed to solving Washington's endemic problems, and many more contributors from every walk of life. These contributors are all making a loud and strong call for a new process of running the United States of America. They believe in the cause of NO LABELS, and we believe you will, too.
Jon Fredrickson was 16 when he started to complain of headaches and sickness. An eyesight test revealed the shocking news that he had developed a brain tumour. Over the months and years that followed Jon and his devoted family endured a roller-coaster ride of treatment and therapy, diagnosis and disappointment, until finally no more could be done for Jon, and he died at the age of only 26 with his devoted parents at his bedside. Jon's illness did not prevent this brave young man from setting up home on his own, travelling around the country independently and embarking on a successful career. His mother Jacky kept a diary of her years of trial, and she has now developed it into this moving and inspiring book.

Jón Leifs and the Musical Invention of Iceland

In Jón Leifs and the Musical Invention of Iceland, Árni Heimir Ingólfsson provides a striking account of the dramatic career of Iceland's iconic composer. Leifs (1899–1968) was the first Icelander to devote himself fully to composition at a time when a local music scene was only beginning to take form. He was a fervent nationalist in his art, fashioning an idiosyncratic and uncompromising 'Icelandic' sound from traditions of vernacular music with the aim to legitimize Iceland as an independent, culturally empowered nation. In addition to exploring Leifs's career, Ingólfsson provides detailed descriptions of Leifs's major works and their cultural contexts. Leifs's music was inspired by the Icelandic landscape and includes auditory depictions of volcanos, geysers, and waterfalls. The raw quality of his orchestral music is frequently enhanced by an expansive percussion section, including anvils, stones, sirens, bells, ships' chains, shotguns, and cannons. Largely neglected in his own lifetime, Leifs's music has been rediscovered in recent years and hailed as a singular and deeply original contribution to twentieth-century music. Jón Leifs and the Musical Invention of Iceland enriches our understanding and appreciation of Leifs and his music by exploring the political, literary and environmental contexts that influenced his work.

Polly Kahl started blogging about the Gosselins after they moved to her small town of Wernersville, Pennsylvania. In the next two years she experienced a whirlwind of life lessons about reality TV and the business of entertainment as the Gosselin family splintered and eventually broke apart. Jon & Kate Plus Eight: "Reality" TV & the Selling of the Gosselins is full of insightful interviews, discussions and practical solutions from researcher Jennifer L Pozner, child advocate Paul Petersen, actor Eric Roberts, body language expert Dr. Lillian Glass, Becki Dilley, parent of the Dilley sextuplets, and other experts on the entertainment industry and reality TV. The author, a professional counselor, adds her unique voice to the discussion with commentaries on the psychological aspects of the Gosselin phenomenon in this examination of "reality" TV and its impact on a fractured family TLC once called Jon & Kate Plus Eight. ENDORSEMENTS Polly Kahl's book takes the reader on a shocking journey behind the fake smiley faces of a popular reality television show. Having participated in realty television myself, I know the pressure camera crews are under to create interesting television from what might otherwise be boring times. Polly's story casts that pressure and its effects in a new, and rather ruthless, light. I don't know if this story has any heroes; perhaps everyone is a victim or villain. It certainly makes me see today's reality TV from a new and more critical perspective. -John Elder Robison, bestselling author of Look Me in the Eye and Be Different Some wonderful works of art have emerged from blogs Juno, the movie...and now Polly Kahl's book. We've heard horror stories about the life of Shirley Temple, and her mother's cold obsession with her success, and her horror as her daughter started to grow up and "lose her cute." The Brady Bunch kids were hated by the real children of the actors playing the parents. What happens when there's no separation? When the show family and the real family are one? Where does a child turn then? This book forces us to look at that, and gives us a means to take some steps to protect children in the fast-growing industry of reality TV. The beauty of it is that Polly offers solutions to the problems on which she sheds light. And we all need to be part of the solution. As the author points out, this is a time to think with our hearts. -Eliza & Eric Roberts, Actors & Child Advocates Prospective child stars and their stage parents have a best friend in Polly Kahl. Her very readable book on The Gosselins can serve as a warning to all future Michaels. While extremely entertaining, it is also a valuable reference as to the impact of reality TV on a family. It is a must read for anyone interested in celebrity culture and child development. -Michael Brody M.D., Chair of the Media Committee, American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Being in the spotlight is no easy task. I should know, having been a child actor from the ages of three to eighteen but I could leave the set, go home and be a kid. Not so for the eight Gosselin children, they have no escape. Polly Kahl looks at the sad truth about reality shows and their effect on the lives of their young participants. -Jon Provost, former child actor of film and television, Timmy in TV's Lassie This book should be required reading for any college course that studies the popular genre of reality television. Counselor Polly Kahl's background in psychology gives her an added edge in crafting interviews that draw out vital information while packing a punch. Reality TV fans and fans of Jon & Kate Plus Eight will never think of the show in the same way again after reading this compassionate study of the effects of reality TV on the Gosselins. Click "add to cart" for this interesting read. -Suzanne Finnamore, bestselling author of Split and The Zygote
