Turner is a dark, layered, mildly supernatural thriller about what it means to be human, pure love and the sacrifices people make for those things. Hero, a young boy joining a new school, discovers he has a unique ability. As his perception widens, he finds others that have the same ability, including his mysterious, enigmatic brother, James. They train together honing their skills and strengthening their fraternal bond until, upon his eighteenth birthday, Hero learns that with the ability comes a choice and whenever he makes a decision, there are serious consequences. The story contrasts the brothers' lives as Hero decides to "Join The Light" whilst James takes an entirely different path and disappears. Will they ever be reunited?

Music at Hand

Music at Hand

From prehistoric bone flutes to pipe organs to digital synthesizers, instruments have been important to musical cultures around the world. Yet, how do instruments affect musical organization? And how might they influence players' bodies and minds? Music at Hand explores these questions with a distinctive blend of music theory, psychology, and philosophy. Practicing an instrument, of course, builds bodily habits and skills. But it also develops connections between auditory and motor regions in a player's brain. These multi-sensory links are grounded in particular instrumental interfaces. They reflect the ways that an instrument converts action into sound, and the ways that it coordinates physical and tonal space. Ultimately, these connections can shape listening, improvisation, or composition. This means that pianos, guitars, horns, and bells are not simply tools for making notes. Such technologies, as creative prostheses, also open up possibilities for musical action, perception, and cognition. Throughout the book, author Jonathan De Souza examines diverse musical case studies-from Beethoven to blues harmonica, from Bach to electronic music-introducing novel methods for the analysis of body-instrument interaction. A companion website supports these analytical discussions with audiovisual examples, including motion-capture videos and performances by the author. Written in lucid prose, Music at Hand offers substantive insights for music scholars, while remaining accessible to non-specialist readers. This wide-ranging book will engage music theorists and historians, ethnomusicologists, organologists, composers, and performers-but also psychologists, philosophers, media theorists, and anyone who is curious about how musical experience is embodied and conditioned by technology.

In the exhilarating tradition of I Am Pilgrim comes a sprawling, international high-stakes thriller that pits the intelligence of one man against one of the most successful spies ever to operate against American interests--"one of 2018's hottest debuts " (The Real Book Spy). When a young Israeli walks into an American embassy and offers to betray his country for money and power, he has no idea that the CIA agent interviewing him is a Russian mole. Years later, the Israeli has risen in the ranks to become a trusted advisor to Israel's prime minister and throughout his career, he's been forced to share everything with the Kremlin. Now, however, a hint that there may be a traitor in the highest realms of power has slipped out and a top-secret team is put together to hunt him down. The chase leads the team from the streets of Tel Aviv to deep inside the Russian zone and, finally, to the United States, where a most unique spymaster is revealed. The final showdown--between the traitor and the betrayed--can only be resolved by an act of utter treachery that could have far-reaching and devastating consequences for all of humanity.

From the author of the internationally bestselling "supremely effective, cunningly crafted" (The Providence Journal) thriller Traitor, a cerebral, suspenseful, and "different kind of spy novel" (Kirkus Reviews) filled with high-stakes intrigue in Israel's top intelligence agency. After Ya'ara Stein is forced out of her job at the Mossad--the secret intelligence service of Israel--the Prime Minister offers her a classified job. Known for her aptitude, beauty, and deadliness, Stein is asked to set up a secret unit that will act independently, answerable only to the Prime Minister. This deadly team, filled with bright young men and women recruited and trained by Stein, quickly faces threats both old and new. Descendants of the lethal militant Red Army Faction have returned to terrorize Europe and fears of a radical Islam splinter group force the unit to distinguish between facts and smoke screens. As Stein's cadets struggle to crush these threats, they soon discover how easily the hunter can become the hunted. A dazzling, tension-filled novel that sheds light on the world hidden just below the surface of our everyday lives, this "multidimensional...authentic" (San Francisco Review of Books) thriller offers a peek behind the curtain of today's deadliest conflicts. With breathless pacing and shocking twists and turns, it proves that Jonathan de Shalit "has learned well from the likes of Mr. le Carr " (The Wall Street Journal).

Management Platforms and Protocols for Internet of Things

Management Platforms and Protocols for Internet of Things

IoT Management systems need of the scalability, standardized communication, and context-aware requirements to achieve the management of connected devices with security, and accuracy in real environments. Interoperability and heterogeneity between hardware and application layers are also critical issues. Typically, IoT Network Management has complex middleware / platforms that make use of protocols without a standard to support communication and the integration of the connected device on IoT network management. Thus, the evaluation and comparison of such platforms and protocols to choose the best technologies is a hard task, since they are hardly comparable as a consequence of their lack of standardization. Considering the above-mentioned issues, this book focuses on platforms and protocols for network and device management, IoT-based, aiming to select the best candidate between platform(s) and protocol(s) for use in the real environment. In other words: Given the current scenario of the heterogeneity in networks and devices, must be possible to propose a new solution with current platforms and protocols for IoT management.
