Welcome to the sandwich generation. The baby boomers care for their elderly parents and often their grandchildren, all at the same time. This is a story about the difficulties of dealing pleasantly with an aging parent who has health problems, can't hear, often lacks cognitive reasoning, and never liked me very much. Nevertheless, who is better equipped to give a mother a loving home and understanding? I get upset at times but rarely show it because she's, my mom. No matter what the consequences to me, I, the martyr, continue the day with a smile, looking for the rainbow. It's out there somewhere if I just keep searching. At times, this story will sound disrespectful, but it is my way of coping. I tried to get this story written while she was still alive, knowing I would feel terribly guilty writing about some of the episodes after her death. Throughout all the trials and tribulations, there were times when we could still laugh together and reminisce. Knowing that I have given her comfort in her final years is good, but as she used to say, "Hell, I'll outlive all my family." But that prediction did not come true. If it had, I would have hoped that someone would throw this book in the lake before she had a chance to read it; otherwise, she would have peed on my grave.
"A story about a son's life, loves, and pursuit of happiness. This book was written by his mom as a birthday gift. It's meant to remind him of his many talents."

The day Red was born, the trumpets sounded, the heavenly angels burst into song, and a voice from on high was heard saying, "LOOK OUT BELOW Here comes Red, and you better be ready for him."From the hills of the Kiamichi Mountains in southeast Oklahoma, a boy picked himself up by the bootstraps, brushed off the Oklahoma dust, and showed the world he was someone to reckon with. The only thing he knew was hard work. Deprived in more ways than one, he learned early in life to keep his mouth shut. But when he was on his own, he quickly made up for it and never stopped after that. He became a mouthpiece for all the cops in the state of Nevada, as well as nationwide. His grammar was less than perfect, yet no one misunderstood what he was bluntly saying. He got his point across immediately and didn't mince words. This is a remarkable story of a boy who went from the cotton fields to the oil fields, from trucker to pilot, from cop to labor leader, from lobbyist to senator. At one point, he was either president or chairman of eleven different organizations at the same time. But his accomplishments didn't change him. As he always said, "I'm just a poor ol' country boy come to town trying to make good." And he certainly did. This story shows that honesty, hard work, tenacity, and humor are still the best assets a person can possess. They opened doors that would normally have been slammed in his face, had he not had the foresight to stick his boot in the door ahead of time.

Kitty O'Shea (1846-1921) was at the centre of one of the most notorious scandals of the late Victorian Age - a scandal which brought the downfall of Charles Stewart Parnell, the leader of the movement for Home Rule for Ireland and crippling damage to the movement itself. In 1889, Parnell was named co-respondent in a divorce suit brought by one of his own MPs, Captain Willie O'Shea. Alleged to have conducted an ten-year affair with Mrs Katherine O'Shea, Parnell was also revealed to be the father of the three youngest O'Shea children. The divorce and the details it exposed was a great public scandal in Victorian England and Catholic Ireland. Yet Parnell refused to resign from his leadership of the Home Rule movement, which resulted in the split of his party. In this compelling new biography, Jane Jordan explores the central, still unanswered questions:Why did Parnell risk the political future of Ireland (and his own) in conducting an affair with a married woman? And was O'Shea a duped husband, as he maintained, or did he connive with his wife's adultery in order to further his own political career?
