"Cancer viruses" have played a paradoxical role in the history of cancer research. Discovered in 1911 by Peyton Rous (1) at the Rockefeller Institute, they were largely ignored for several decades. Witness his eventual recognition for a Nobel Prize, but not until 1966-setting an all time record for latency, and testimony to one more advantage of longevity. In the 1950s, another Rockefeller Nobelist, Wendell Stanley, spearheaded a campaign to focus attention on viruses as etiological agents in cancer, his plat form having been the chemical characterization of the tobacco mosaic virus as a pure protein-correction, ribonucleoprotein-in 1935 (2). This doctrine was a centerpiece of the U.S. National Cancer Crusade of 1971: if human cancers were caused by viruses, the central task was to isolate them and prepare vaccines for immunization. At that point, many observers felt that perhaps too much attention was being devoted to cancer viruses. It was problematic whether viruses played an etiological role in more than a handful of human cancers.

One of the greatest examples of a truly successful life we have in Scripture is Joshua. Throughout Exodus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy, Joshua is described as Moses' minister. He was always following the example and leadership of Moses, the man God appointed to lead the children of Israel out of Egypt and into Canaan. Joshua was then chosen to succeed Moses as the new leader of Israel and bring them into the Promised Land.Joshua was not chosen because of a royal lineage or his status in nobility. He had neither of these. He was chosen, I believe because of some very key character qualities that he had. And these characteristics brought God's blessing and success in his life - and in the lives of those around him.As we look at his life, there is an awesome statement said about him in the middle of the book of Joshua. This statement is the basis of this book: "As the Lord commanded Moses his servant, so did Moses command Joshua, and so did Joshua; he left nothing undone of all that the Lord commanded Moses." (Joshua 11:15)Notice that part I put in bold: "he left nothing undone." This was not his assessment. Neither was it the assessment of his peers. This is the observation that God made and recorded for us. Joshua's testimony was that of accomplishing everything that he was supposed to do.As we look at this thought of "leaving nothing undone," I am not suggesting that you can do everything that you want to do or everything that others want you to do. I am saying that when you find what God wants you to do, develop the right character, and work in God's strength; you can do everything that God wants you to do

In Potions, Joshua Hamilton, a leading authority on drugs and toxins, examines the myths surrounding chemicals, including prescription drugs, herbal remedies, and much more. One of the most dangerous modern myths about chemicals, Hamilton reveals, is that "natural" means "safe." St Johns Wort, for instance, is both natural and dangerous, clinically shown to produce adverse reactions when combined with common prescription drugs. The flip-side, that man-made chemicals are inherently more dangerous than natural chemicals, is even more pervasive, and far more detrimental. Thus many people refuse to take prescriptions because they are not "natural"--unaware that most drugs are either natural products, derived from natural products, or are closely related chemically to a natural product. And these same people will take herbal remedies--which do not have to adhere to the strict safety guidelines that drugs do. Drawing on hundreds of interviews with policy practitioners, he employs qualitative, comparative case study methods, including process-tracing and typologies, and develops a framing/gatekeepers argument, emphasizing the ways in which advocacy campaigns use rhetoric to tap into the main cultural currents in the countries where they operate. Busby argues that when values and costs potentially pull in opposing directions, values will win if domestic gatekeepers who are able to block policy change believe that the values at stake are sufficiently important.

This argument is then demonstrated through application to case studies from sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia.
