Deutsche Und Französische Syntax Im Formalismus Der Lfg

Deutsche Und Französische Syntax Im Formalismus Der Lfg

This volume presents the first large-scale treatment of German syntax along the framework of lexical functional grammar (LFG), which well suits German's rich morphology and flexible word order. Berman addresses both empirical and theoretical concerns, examining phenomena that have long been discussed in the literature yet remain controversial. The principles of LFG are applied to, and occasionally challenged by, three main areas of theoretical interest: subjects, traces and complement clauses. This reaches central topics of German syntax, such as phrase structure, "subjectless" clauses, expletives, agreement, weak crossover, long-distance dependencies, distribution of subordinated clauses, correlative pronouns, and embedded clauses.

Human Fungal Pathogens

Human Fungal Pathogens

Some yeasts and molds that are common in the environment can infect humans and cause a range of diseases, from superficial (e.g., athlete's foot) to severe (e.g., cryptococcal meningitis). These pathogenic fungi pose a particular threat to immunocompromised individuals, such as those living with HIV/AIDS, and are becoming a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Written and edited by experts in the field, this collection from Cold Spring Harbor Perspectives in Medicine provides a comprehensive review of the biology and diseases of fungal pathogens. Contributors examine their life cycles, nutritional and metabolic requirements, and morphological characteristics, as well as their interactions with humans-their modes of dissemination and penetration, the mechanisms they use to evade the immune system, and their effects on target organs. Specific chapters are devoted to the major disease-causing fungi, such as Candida, Aspergillus, and Cryptococcus species. The ecology, evolution, and epidemiology of human fungal pathogens are also explored. This volume includes discussions about options for diagnosing and treating fungal infections, as well as challenges presented by emerging drug-resistant strains. It is therefore an essential reference for all fungal biologists and medical professionals who wish to understand and manage these difficult pathogens.

This book is the first comparative study of the ways in which the Holocaust has been memorialized in Australia, Britain and New Zealand. It examines: The processes by which the Holocaust entered Jewish and mainstream cultures. Representations of the uniquesness and/or universality of the Holocaust. Uses and abuses of the terminology and imagery of the Holocaust. The relationship between Holocaust remembrance and Jewish unity and identity. Interpretations of the lessons of the Holocaust. Despite the different national histories of Australia, Britain, and New Zealand, and notwithstanding variations in Jewish community size and composition, the Holocaust has been memorialized in remarkably similar ways, although in many respects these are significantly different from the American experience.

Brimming with stories and images, this fascinating collection celebrates Harbour Publishing's fifty-year commitment to recording the unique ways of life that have sprung from the West Coast.Half a century and hundreds of book releases have rolled by since Harbour Publishing was founded in 1974. So it is only appropriate to mark this golden anniversary with a new omnibus edition of Raincoast Chronicles, the series that has always been at the heart of Harbour's mission to express the rich culture and history of BC's coast. Indeed, it was the Chronicles, which began publication in 1972, that inspired the creation of Harbour itself, as the expansive articles grew into book-length works. The lushly illustrated collection Fifth Five gathers volumes 21 through 24 of Raincoast Chronicles along with a new, previously unpublished Raincoast Chronicle 25 by Alan Haig-Brown, focusing on the author's formative years as a deckhand in the 1960s and early '70s on a fishing boat run by a We Wai Kai family he married into as a teenager. The history of commercial fishing and of BC itself, in all its twisting relations with Indigenous peoples, is mirrored in Haig-Brown's vivid account of life aboard, where "there are no typical days" despite the tightly choreographed tasks and immense local knowledge required by this ever-risky business. In issue 21, West Coast Wrecks and Other Maritime Tales, maritime historian Rick James leads an authoritative tour of BC's most famous shipwrecks, as weathered sailors and divers share lore about one of the most dangerous stretches of coastline in the world. Also included are pieces from some of Canada's most exciting and iconic writers--Al Purdy, Anne Cameron, Edith Iglauer, Patrick Lane and Grant Lawrence, along with stories of disasters at sea, scarcely believable bush plane feats, eerie events at coastal ghost towns and reminisces of the Schnarr sisters who kept cougars as pets.In its passion for storytelling about overlooked but crucial aspects of the past, Fifth Five serves as a fitting tribute to Harbour Publishing's own deep history.

For any head teacher, ongoing discussion and professional growth opportunities are critical to being an effective and successful school leader. In some situations, head teachers may be limited to attendance at regional conferences. In small school systems, administrators may experience isolation and the lack of colleagial support from other school leaders. The Survival Kit for the Elementary School Principal demonstrates that the challenges head teachers face are common to all school administrators and that solutions and recommendations exist for a wide range of school leadership issues. Abby B. Bergman, Judy Powers, and Michael L. Pullen combine years of successful experiences as principals to offer an abundance of pragmatic advice for new and veteran school leaders. The book contains an invaluable array of forms, sample letters, charts, lists, and more, plus resources for the successful day-to-day administration of a school. This revised edition provides assistance and growth opportunities in: - Systems thinking - Negotiating the daunting path of NCLB requirements - Using data to inform practice - Understanding the key role that new technologies play in a school setting.

Judith is Volume 40 in the acclaimed anchor Bible series of new book-by-book translations of the Old and New Testaments and Apocrypha. In the Apocrypha, Judith is the saint who murdered for her people. She offered herself to Holofernes, the Assyrian general sent by Nebuchadnezzar to destroy the Israelites. After she had charmed Holofernes with flattery and drink, Judith chopped of his head while he lay in a drunken stupor, thereby leaving his troops “headless” and in a state of total panic and confusion. Her victory was celebrated in song and brought peace to her land for years to come. In his illuminating new translation and commentary, Carey A. Moore considers the historicity of the story and explores the author’s true intent: Was it to describe actual events or to compose a fictitious story of other purposes? Was his concern more historical or theological? The story of Judith abounds in ironies. There is Judith, the beautiful woman who lived a stark, celibate existence after her husband’s death had left her a wealthy widow. Born into a sexist society with rigidly defined roles, Judith better “played the man” than did any of her male compatriots. There is Holofernes, the Assyrian conqueror, unable to defeat a small Israelite village after dozens of countries had fallen under his sword. Intent on seducing Judith, Holofernes instead lost his head to her. Perhaps the ultimate irony of all is the story of Judith itself: the timeless tale of a deeply religious woman who became revered not for her poverty but for an act of murder. Dr. Moore’s study of the canonicity of Judith brings perspective to the story’s varied acceptance among both Jews and Christians. It also notes the similarity between this work and the equally popular story of Esther; each woman, through different means, served her people through acts of bravery. The photographs and maps illustrating Judith include depictions of the story of Judith by such masters as Machiavelli, Botticelli, Caravaggio, and Donatello.

At 21 Judith is ready to conquer the world, she has a new job working for the government, and a new life ahead of her that will test her resolve. The communist movement is looking for converts to infiltrate the government. Will they draw her in? Women are living and loving more freely. Will she ignore the promises she made and allow the lure of this new life to change her? Will she find romance or tragedy? What will her family think if she tells them? She will need wisdom, courage and faith for the journey as the road to independence always comes at a price.

Judith tells the story of a beautiful Jewish woman who enters the tent of an invading general, gets him drunk, and then slices off his head, thus saving her village and Jerusalem. This short novella was somewhat surprisingly included in the early Christian versions of the Old Testament and has played an important role in the Western tradition ever since. This commentary provides a detailed analysis of the text's composition and its meaning in its original historical context, and thoroughly surveys the history of Judith scholarship. Lawrence M. Wills not only considers Judith's relation to earlier biblical texts--how the author played upon previous biblical motifs and interpreted important biblical passages--but also addresses the rise of Judith and other Jewish novellas in the context of ancient Near Eastern and Greek literature, as well as their relation to cross-cultural folk motifs. Because of the popularity of Judith in art and culture, this volume also addresses the book's history of interpretation in paintings, sculpture, music, drama, and literature. A number of images of artistic depictions of Judith are included and discussed in detail.

2023 Catholic Media Association First Place Award, Scripture – Academic Studies The striking scene of Judith cutting off Holofernes’s head with his own sword in his own bed has inspired the imaginations of readers for millennia. But there is more to her story than just this climactic act and more to her character than just beauty and violence. This volume offers a comprehensive examination of gender ideologies in the book of Judith, from the hyper-masculine machinations of war and empire to the dynamics of class in Judith’s relationship with her enslaved handmaid. Overall, this commentary investigates the book of Judith through a feminist lens, informed by critical masculinity studies, queer theory, and reception criticism.
