This novel is about a young man, Jule, who grew up in rural Alabama in the 1930s. He experienced a peaceful farm life filled with hard work in the hot sun followed by socializing by moonlight in the cooling hours of the night. His mother, Ollie Miss, raised him "to be somebody," as she said, and he always knew that he would follow her advice. As he grew, he developed a close friendship with the white storekeeper's son, Rollo, and an earthly love for Berta Mae, a neighbor girl. This quiet life changed abruptly for the young Negro boy when he fled Alabama and arrived in Harlem, there to gain a foothold in that world center of black social and economic power. Although a novel, Jule is strongly autobiographical and gives insight into a vanished Harlem, a glittering community that produced a rich outpouring of distinctively American literary works. J. Lee Greene's introduction places the novel in the context of the time and links this work with Henderson's earlier novel - Ollie Miss, also available from the University of Alabama Press - establishing its rightful place in Afro-American literature.

Jule's loves fishing, connecting with nature, astronomy, and writing. Like most ten-year-olds, he is confronted with many challenges that he chooses to solve on his own. When problems arise at school, instead of fighting he goes to his thinking place in the woods. On one such occasion he is introduced to his identical twin, Albert. When he tries to convince his family he has a twin, they believe it's just another of his imaginative stories. Confused and on his own to solve the mystery, Jule's begins to wonder if Albert is real or just a figment of his imagination.
This book is about Jule the Skunk who learns a good lesson on the way she treats her friends. When she goes in search for her parents she meets a snake named Erc. Jule also meets a couple of other forest friends when her and Erc are having a disagreement by the river.
"Jule the Mule" not only focuses on the long vowel U sound, but teaches children to explore new interests and skills to find what they enjoy. Through this experience, they may find abilities that they otherwise never would have known about. This new found talent can give them and others around them so much happiness. Learning to read can be very difficult for children. It is important that the steps are small enough to ensure success. Many early reading children's books immediately cover all short and long vowel sounds together, which is very confusing for first time readers. Through my research, I have found that it is very important to introduce the vowel sounds one at a time. Since there are so many first time reading books that blend too many words with too many vowel sounds together this can be frustrating for children and sometimes makes them want to shut down and give up. Therefore, I created these books so that children can build their confidence when reading. Each book focuses on a particular vowel sound and starts out with simple words for success. This book focuses on the long vowel U sound. First, practice the focus words with your child that are in each book. Next, each book is meant to be read by the parent to the child, then together, and eventually let the child try on their own. When reading the books, point to each word and each sound as you read it. Then, work on blending the sounds as you point to each sound with the child. Continue practicing the focus words in each book and reading to and with your child. Since each book focuses on one vowel sound, it helps them to succeed in building their reading skills by working on one book and therefore one vowel sound at a time. As your child builds confidence in one book, they can move to the next. Happy reading
