I want to go on record to you, my readers, that this book is not a book to bring pity, even though it may sound as such in spots. If you are expecting that, then you may not want to read this book. I am sharing my experiences, and hoping to convey how Angels helped me make changes in my life. We all make our own choices in life, whether we acknowledge them or not. We can try to blame others for these choices, but in the end we made the final decision. All anyone else can do is influence us, however again, the final choice is our choice to make.

This is the first book to examine the key role played by New York gallerist and dealer Valentine Dudensing (1892-1967) in shaping the canon of modern art in the United States. It reveals how Dudensing developed relationships with the country’s leading art collectors, establishing the market and bringing some of modernism’s most celebrated artists to American consciousness in the process. Many of the paintings that he imported from Europe are now the cornerstones of US museum collections. Before the Museum of Modern Art opened in 1929, there were few places in New York to see contemporary art from Paris – the Valentine Gallery was one of them. In the intimate and elegant rooms of the gallery's townhouse premises on 57th Street, the public witnessed the first solo US shows of Giorgio de Chirico and Joan Miró, the first retrospective of Henri Matisse, and Piet Mondrian's only lifetime solo exhibition. In 1939, Pablo Picasso's masterpiece Guernica made its US debut there. Despite its preeminent reputation as a leading centre for modern art for over two decades, the Valentine Gallery name has been lost to history. Dudensing quietly closed the gallery in May 1947 and seemingly disappeared. His death two decades later went unreported in the press.Drawing on a wealth of primary source materials, including the gallery's long-lost sales records, The Valentine Gallery unearths the story of this preeminent forum for modern art, revealing how a pioneering gallerist brought the School of Paris to eminence in the US, and ultimately changed the country's artistic taste forever.

An NPR, Washington Post, Time, People, Vulture, Guardian, Vox, Kirkus Reviews, Newsweek, LitHub, and New York Public Library Best Book of the Year * "Delightful...cathartic, devious, and terrifically entertaining." --The New York Times * "Timely, whip-smart, and darkly funny." --People (Book of the Week) A provocative, razor-sharp, and timely debut novel about a beloved English professor facing a slew of accusations against her professor husband by former students--a situation that becomes more complicated when she herself develops an obsession of her own... "When I was a child, I loved old men, and I could tell that they also loved me." And so we are introduced to our narrator who's "a work of art in herself" (The Washington Post): a popular English professor whose charismatic husband at the same small liberal arts college is under investigation for his inappropriate relationships with his former students. The couple have long had a mutual understanding when it comes to their extra-marital pursuits, but with these new allegations, life has become far less comfortable for them both. And when our narrator becomes increasingly infatuated with Vladimir--a celebrated, married young novelist who's just arrived on campus--their tinder box world comes dangerously close to exploding. "Timely, whip-smart, and darkly funny" (People), Vladimir takes us into charged territory, where the boundaries of morality bump up against the impulses of the human heart. This edgy, uncommonly assured debut perfectly captures the personal and political minefield of our current moment, exposing the nuances and the grey area between power and desire.

Post-Ethical Society

Post-Ethical Society

We've all seen the images from Abu Ghraib: stress positions, US soldiers kneeling on the heads of prisoners, and dehumanizing pyramids formed from black-hooded bodies. We have watched officials elected to our highest offices defend enhanced interrogation in terms of efficacy and justify drone strikes in terms of retribution and deterrence. But the mainstream secular media rarely addresses the morality of these choices, leaving us to ask individually: Is this right? In this singular examination of the American discourse over war and torture, Douglas V. Porpora, Alexander Nikolaev, Julia Hagemann May, and Alexander Jenkins investigate the opinion pages of American newspapers, television commentary, and online discussion groups to offer the first empirical study of the national conversation about the 2003 invasion of Iraq and the revelations of prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib a year later. Post-Ethical Society is not just another shot fired in the ongoing culture war between conservatives and liberals, but a pensive and ethically engaged reflection of America's feelings about itself and our actions as a nation. And while many writers and commentators have opined about our moral place in the world, the vast amount of empirical data amassed in Post-Ethical Society sets it apart - and makes its findings that much more damning.
May Alcott Nieriker, Author and Advocate
May Alcott Nieriker, Author and Advocate examines in-depth the writings on art and travel by the youngest sister of famed novelist Louisa May Alcott. Like other American women in the later nineteenth century, due to her gender May was unable to receive the advanced training and exhibition opportunities in the USA that she needed to become a notable professional painter. An additional obstacle was her family’s insecure financial status, making it difficult to study abroad for training. Fortunately, thanks to Louisa’s generosity May was able to make three extended trips to London and Paris in order to gain further training, and eventually attained the honor of having two paintings accepted into the Paris Salon. However, this book argues that Alcott Nieriker’s main contributions to cultural history were not necessarily her artistic creations, but rather her publications on travel and art—specifically, four articles for the Boston Evening Transcript and an 1879 guidebook, Studying Art Abroad and How To Do It Cheaply. In these works May sought to transform the art world, and social mores, through her advocacy for the rights of women to have equal access to a professional, artistic career.

Family History: Thomas Ahab Nickell & Cora May Iverson Nickell

The ancestors of Thomas Ahab Nickell came from the Scottish Highlands - from Clan Mac Nicol on the Island of Skye in the Hebrides, from which it is said they joined with bands of Vikings in their raids of the coast of England. Later, they were lured to Northern Ireland and then to the wilderness of the American frontier. But that is another story. Cora May Iverson's ancestors, on the other hand, came from the home of the Vikings - Norway, both the mountainous valleys of the east and the long, deep, inner fjords of the west. They, too, were drawn to leave their homeland by the appeal of the American frontier. Two children of these diverse family backgrounds -Thomas Ahab and Cora May -- were destined to meet in the frontier town of Huron, South Dakota, and to marry. Both of their families were homesteaders whose fathers had been given preference as Civil War veterans to stake a claim in the Dakota Territory. This book is an attempt to capture a bit of their history, to gather together facts and details about their life and times and of those who came before them, to try to preserve a bit of family history while it is still possible, before it disappears or is forgotten in the inevitable passing of time. Included also are brief articles about the historic Nickell Homestead and Mill and about two legendary family members: Roger Williams--founder of Rhode Island and of the Baptist Church in America, and Jedediah Smith- the great Western explorer and Mountain Man. Highlights from history include: --Life aboard ship traveling "steerage class" in the six-week ocean voyage to America --Mauled by a grizzly bear: scalp hanging by a thread is sewed on by a friend -- Escape from a Confederate Prisoner of War Camp by hiding between logs in a river and breathing through a hollow reed --The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 -- The Blizzard of 1888 and the Schoolhouse Blizzard
Anna Julia Cooper, Visionary Black Feminist
Vivian M. May explores the theoretical and political contributions of Anna Julia Cooper, a renowned Black feminist scholar, educator and activist whose ideas deserve far more attention than they have received. Drawing on Africana and feminist theory, May places Cooper's theorizing in its historical contexts and offers new ways to interpret the evolution of Cooper's visionary politics, subversive methodology, and defiant philosophical outlook. Rejecting notions that Cooper was an elitist duped by dominant ideologies, May contends that Cooper's ambiguity, code-switching, and irony should be understood as strategies of a radical methodology of dissent.May shows how across six decades of work, Cooper traced history's silences and delineated the workings of power and inequality in an array of contexts, from science to literature, economics to popular culture, religion to the law, education to social work, and from the political to the personal. May emphasizes that Cooper eschewed all forms of mastery and called for critical consciousness and collective action on the part of marginalized people at home and abroad. She concludes that in using a border-crossing, intersectional approach, Cooper successfully argues for theorizing from experience, develops inclusive methods of liberation, and crafts a vision of a fundamentally egalitarian social imaginary.
