Towards Energy-Efficient Buildings: Envelope Technologies and Sustainable Energy Systems examines the intersection of building design and energy systems analysis, paving the way to sustainable, efficient buildings and our communal energy future. This book begins by outlining the major energy challenges for buildings and the fundamentals and opportunities in envelope technology for their increasing the efficiency of their energy systems. Close analysis of various technologies is then carried out, including case studies and demonstrations of impact assessment techniques. The ways in which these technologies interact with energy systems within the building are drawn out and clarified for a range of readers. Finally, detailed guidance on energy system assessment and analysis is provided. Bringing together these two essential disciplines for sustainable living, Towards Energy-Efficient Buildings will support energy engineers, researchers, and students of energy systems in developing technologies for energy-efficient, sustainable buildings.
On Leaving Bai Di Cheng

The book is the product of a private Canadian expedition to China in 1992. Its members sought to gauge the potential cultural destruction of the daunting and controversial Three Gorges Dam project, which was actively supported by the Canadian government and by corporate sectors. What cultural losses will accompany the expected economic and political gains? What will China, Canada, and the world community lose? How might we, as Canadians, view the purpose and impact of the project, which is now well under way? Using a government-sponsored assessment of the cultural artifacts destined to be submerged by rising waters behind the dam project, our guides - a publisher (Caroline Walker), a heritage consultant (Robert Shipley), a travel writer (Ruth Lor Malloy), and a scholar (Fu Kailin) - lead us on a sometimes comical and frequently troubling tour of the Yangzi gorges region.

This book introduces students to the challenges related to international crime and punishment, and the ways that criminal justice systems have sought to confront them. The dismantling and opening up of borders by technology, transportation, international trade, and the global flow of labor and capital have allowed those engaging in criminal behavior to work across borders in ways that challenge the traditional nation-state and its criminal justice system, making the study of international crime and justice increasingly relevant. This book not only covers the nuts and bolts of international crime and law enforcement, but also raises abstract, theoretical issues for debate and asks critical questions about the best ways to think about international criminal justice problems. Hot topics such a war crimes, genocide, crimes against humanity, terrorism, drug smuggling, human trafficking, financial crimes, environmental crimes, and cybercrime are addressed, and connections between globalization, politics, and criminal justice reflect the modern realities of international and transnational crime. Following an introductory chapter that presents the dimensions of international criminal justice, the text is organized into two major sections, the first portion discussing major international crimes and why people engage in them, and the second part laying out the central structures of the international criminal justice system, including international courts, transnational law enforcement, and aspects of United States criminal justice developed to deal with international crimes. Throughout the book, the authors place global crime within the context of contemporary politics and current events. Pedagogical tools such as summaries of significant international cases, discussion questions, and a thorough bibliography aid reader engagement and understanding . This text is suitable for students in global criminology, international crime, and comparative criminology courses and researchers and policy makers concerned with international and transnational crime.

Sports and Foreign Policy in Taiwan

Sports and Foreign Policy in Taiwan

In this exciting new book, Taiwanese scholar Catherine Kai-Ping Lin examines Taiwan’s diplomatic history since the 1970s through the lens of sports in the development of nationalism in foreign relations. Since 1971, when Taiwan lost its United Nations seat to the communist People’s Republic of China, the country has gradually shifted its foreign policy. Originally following its “One-China Policy” -- conquering the mainland and reunifying China, -- Taiwan has more recently promoted its status as an independent country amid an international atmosphere in which it does not enjoy diplomatic recognition.Presenting a highly original chronological case study of the role of sports in the making of Taiwan’s foreign policy, Lin aims to enrich our understanding of Taiwan’s unique position in the world by arguing that nationalist forces within the Taiwanese government – all the way up to its top leadership — used athletic competition to promote Taiwanese nationalism and nationhood.
Cohesive Subgraph Search Over Large Heterogeneous Information Networks

Cohesive Subgraph Search Over Large Heterogeneous Information Networks

This SpringerBrief provides the first systematic review of the existing works of cohesive subgraph search (CSS) over large heterogeneous information networks (HINs). It also covers the research breakthroughs of this area, including models, algorithms and comparison studies in recent years. This SpringerBrief offers a list of promising future research directions of performing CSS over large HINs.The authors first classify the existing works of CSS over HINs according to the classic cohesiveness metrics such as core, truss, clique, connectivity, density, etc., and then extensively review the specific models and their corresponding search solutions in each group. Note that since the bipartite network is a special case of HINs, all the models developed for general HINs can be directly applied to bipartite networks, but the models customized for bipartite networks may not be easily extended for other general HINs due to their restricted settings. The authors also analyze and compare these cohesive subgraph models (CSMs) and solutions systematically. Specifically, the authors compare different groups of CSMs and analyze both their similarities and differences, from multiple perspectives such as cohesiveness constraints, shared properties, and computational efficiency. Then, for the CSMs in each group, the authors further analyze and compare their model properties and high-level algorithm ideas. This SpringerBrief targets researchers, professors, engineers and graduate students, who are working in the areas of graph data management and graph mining. Undergraduate students who are majoring in computer science, databases, data and knowledge engineering, and data science will also want to read this SpringerBrief.

This volume is dedicated to a range of CDMA and MC-CDMA transmission aspects of systems designed for communicating over fading wireless channels. Currently, a technical in-depth book on this subject, which has a similar detailed exposure of the recent advances in CDMA, M -ary CDMA and MC-CDMA, is unavailable. A further attraction of the joint treatment of these topics is that it allows the reader to view their design trade-offs in a comparative context. Divided into five main parts: Part I – provides a detailed introduction to the subject of CDMA systems designed for employment in various application Part II – deals with the currently hot topic of genetic algorithm assisted multiuser detection Part III – gives a detailed account of new, reduced-complexity M -ary CDMA schemes Part IV – considers a range of novel MC-CDMA schemes which have the potential of supporting numerous design objectives Part V – provides an overview of the 3G wireless system proposals and characterises the expected network capacity gains attained with the aid of adaptive CDMA systems By providing an all-encompassing self-contained treatment this groundbreaking volume will have appeal to researchers, postgraduate students, academics practising research and development engineers working for wireless communications and computer networking companies, as well as senior undergraduate students and technical managers in the field.

The Microsoft® Robotics Developer Studio (MSRDS) and LEGO® robots together offer a flexible platform for creating robotic systems. Designed for novices with basic programming skills, Robot Development Using Microsoft® Robotics Developer Studio provides clear instructions on developing and operating robots. It includes an extensive array of examples, with corresponding step-by-step tutorials and explanations. The first several chapters of the book introduce the development environment of MSRDS, including concurrency and coordination runtime (CCR), decentralized software services (DSS), visual simulation environment (VSE), and the Microsoft Visual Programming Language (MVPL). The text then covers the inputs and outputs to the robot and control logic and describes how MSRDS can be used to control a LEGO robot’s hearing and vision. It also presents a real-life example involving a sumo robot contest. The final chapter provides information on related academic courses, websites, and books. The top-down approach used in this text helps readers think of a robot as a system rather than an assemblage of parts. Readers gain an understanding of methods for integration, design trade-offs, and teamwork—all essential skills for building robots. The MSRDS codes for all examples are available at http://msrds.caece.net/
