One night Amber stood at the top of the stairs and watched as a murder scene unfolded right before her innocent eyes. She watched in horror as her father stumbled in drunk, accused her mother of being the town whore, and struck her dead.Instead of going to jail, her father kills himself and leaves Amber to fend for herself. That night her whole life changed and forced her down an unwanted dark path. She was forced to live with her only living relative, Uncle Samuel, whom she never knew existed. Uncle Samuel, a well-known gynecologist in Long Beach, Mississippi. is adored by the public. On the outside he is a loving, hardworking, and well-off bachelor. Initially, Amber is excited at the aspect of being taken in by her newfound uncle and living life financially secured. Not long after being accepted into his home, Amber realizes that his outside appearance is all a fa ade. The unexpected red flags leave Amber confused as she is disappointed to see another adult let her down. Uncle Samuel turns out to be a bipolar psychopath who enjoys renting out his niece for his pleasure and extra money in his pocket. On her 18th birthday, she decides to run away and open her dream hair salon. Not long after starting life anew, Amber runs into sweet talking Carlos. He convinces her that he will help her if she lets him move in with her. Reluctantly she agrees and tries to figure out a way to make the situation work. Amber quickly releases that you can't trust everyone that smiles in your face and life isn't what it's all cracked up to be. Will she be able to break free from these accursed men and live her dream life, or will she let them pull her down into a life of pain and despair? In this thrilling novella, Amber is drawn into a world full of lust and deceit as she fights to set herself free from the bondage known as Uncle Samuel and Carlos.

ONE OF NPR'S BEST BOOKS OF 2023 - INSTANT IRISH TIMES #1 BESTSELLER - ONE OF ELECTRIC LITERATURE'S MOST ANTICIPATED BOOKS OF THE YEAR - "A spectacular read for Donna Tartt and Tana French fans." (Kirkus, Starred Review), this gripping literary page-turner traces the lives of former friends, estranged for fifteen years, as they reckon with the terrifying events of the summer that changed their lives. "A master class in building suspense...Walsh manages a deft balance between adolescent angst and ecstasy -- discoveries bringing horror, sorrow and joy -- and the more deliberate, often elegiac reflections of adulthood, reckoning with the promises of the past." --The Washington Post In the seaside town of Kinlough, on Ireland's west coast, three old friends are thrown together for the first time in years. Helen, Joe, and Mushwere part of an original group of six inseparable teenagers in the summer of 2003, with motherless, reckless Kala Lanann as their group's white-hot center. Soon after that summer's peak, Kala disappeared without a trace. Now it's fifteen years later. Helen has reluctantly returned to Ireland for her father's wedding; Joe is a world-famous musician, newly back in town; and Mush has never left, too scared to venture beyond the counter of his mother's caf . But human remains have been discovered in the woods. Two more girls have gone missing. As past and present begin to collide, the estranged friends are forced to confront their own complicity in the events that led to Kala's disappearance. Against the backdrop of a town suffocating on its own secrets, in a story that builds from a smolder to a stunning climax, Kala brilliantly examines the sometimes brutal costs of belonging, as well as the battle in the human heart between vengeance and forgiveness, despair and redemption.

Kala Pani Crossings

When used in India, the term Kala pani refers to the cellular jail in Port Blair, where the British colonisers sent a select category of freedom fighters. In the diaspora it refers to the transoceanic migration of indentured labour from India to plantation colonies across the globe from the mid-19th century onwards. This volume discusses the legacies of indenture in the Caribbean, Reunion, Mauritius, and Fiji, and how they still imbue our present. More importantly, it draws attention to India and raises new questions: doesn’t one need, at some stage, to wonder why this forgotten chapter of Indian history needs to be retrieved? How is it that this history is better known outside India than in India itself? What are the advantages of shining a torch onto a history that was made invisible? Why have the tribulations of the old diaspora been swept under the carpet at a time when the successes of the new diaspora have been foregrounded? What do we stand to gain from resurrecting these histories in the early 21st century and from shifting our perspectives?A key volume on Indian diaspora, modern history, indentured labour, and the legacy of indentureship, this co-edited collection of essays examines these questions largely through the frame of important works of literature and cinema, folk songs, and oral tales, making it an artistic enquiry of the past and of the present. It will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of world history, especially labour history, literature, postcolonial studies, cultural studies, diaspora studies, sociology and social anthropology, Indian Ocean studies, and South Asian studies.

Kala Pani Crossings, Gender and Diaspora
This volume explores the intersections of diaspora and gender within the diasporic and Indian imagination. It investigates the ways in which race, class, caste, gender, and sexuality intersect with concepts of home, belonging, displacement and the reinvention of the nation and of self.Positioning itself as a companion to Kala Pani Crossings: Revisiting 19th century Migrations from India’s Perspective (Routledge, 2021), the present book examines whether indentureship and diasporic locations marginalised women and men or empowered them; how negotiations or resistances have been determined by race, class, caste, or ethnicity; how traditional standards of Indianness and gender relations have been reshaped; how ideas of home, self and the nation have been impacted in the diaspora and in India after the 19th and early 20th century indentureship migration; and what 21st century Indians stand to gain by theorizing the legacy of 19th century indenture through a gender framework. To understand how fiction and non-fiction writers have negotiated the legacy of indentureship to create spaces where normative practices can be interrogated and challenged, the book gives pride of place to interviews with writers such as Cyril Dabydeen, Ananda Devi, Ramabai Espinet, Davina Ittoo, Brij Lal, Peggy Mohan, Shani Mootoo, and Khal Torabully. Thus rooted in critical analyses but also in subjective and creative perspectives, this volume is a major intervention in understanding Indian indenture and its legacy in the diaspora and in India. It will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of literature, history, Indian Ocean studies, migration and South Asian studies.
