Medieval Islamic Maps

Medieval Islamic Maps

Karen C. Pinto

University of Chicago Press
2016

Hundreds of exceptional cartographic images are scattered throughout medieval and early modern Arabic, Persian, and Turkish manuscript collections. The plethora of copies created around the Islamic world over the course of eight centuries testifies to the enduring importance of these medieval visions for the Muslim cartographic imagination. With Medieval Islamic Maps, historian Karen C. Pinto brings us the first in-depth exploration of medieval Islamic cartography from the mid-tenth to the nineteenth century. Pinto focuses on the distinct tradition of maps known collectively as the Book of Roads and Kingdoms (Kitab al-Masalik wa al-Mamalik, or KMMS), examining them from three distinct angles—iconography, context, and patronage. She untangles the history of the KMMS maps, traces their inception and evolution, and analyzes them to reveal the identities of their creators, painters, and patrons, as well as the vivid realities of the social and physical world they depicted. In doing so, Pinto develops innovative techniques for approaching the visual record of Islamic history, explores how medieval Muslims perceived themselves and their world, and brings Middle Eastern maps into the forefront of the study of the history of cartography.

Stunning satellite images of one hundred cities show our urbanizing planet in a new light to reveal the fragile relationship between humanity and Earth Seeing cities around the globe in their larger environmental contexts, we begin to understand how the world shapes urban landscapes and how urban landscapes shape the world. Authors Karen Seto and Meredith Reba provide these revealing views to enhance readers’ understanding of the shape, growth, and life of urban settlements of all sizes—from the remote town of Namche Bazaar in Nepal to the vast metropolitan prefecture of Tokyo, Japan. Using satellite data, the authors show urban landscapes in new perspectives. The book’s beautiful and surprising images pull back the veil on familiar scenes to highlight the growth of cities over time, the symbiosis between urban form and natural landscapes, and the vulnerabilities of cities to the effects of climate change. We see the growth of Las Vegas and Lagos, the importance of rivers to both connecting and dividing cities like Seoul and London, and the vulnerability of Fukushima and San Juan to floods from tsunami or hurricanes. The result is a compelling book that shows cities’ relationships with geography, food, and society.

A unique contribution to library management, this book provides practical advice on making wise decisions about the physical processing of nonprint materials, such as videotapes, computer disks, three-dimensional artifacts, and graphic materials. By drawing on the expertise of librarians around the country, the authors have created an analytical and practical guide for making processing decisions and for carrying out the physical processing of nonprint items.Diverse formats of nonprint materials are common in libraries today, but they present library managers and catalogers with many questions and dilemmas as how best to integrate them into the overall library collection. This professional reference provides practical advice on making wise decisions about the physical processing of nonprint materials such as videotapes, computer disks, three-dimensional artifacts, and graphic materials. The volume sets forth a methodology for informed decision making, presents general options for physical processing that can be applied to any type of nonprint material, and offers practical examples of how to process individual media formats. While the book is broad enough to give general guidance that can be applied to any library and circumstance, it also details particular processing practices for the readers convenience.

Until now, Ayn Rand's novels have been almost exclusively discussed in terms of Rand's philosophy, Objectivism. Either Freedom or Slavery: Individual Liberty and the Novels of Ayn Rand, approaches the novels as literature, in particular, as novels firmly entrenched in traditional American literary history. These six essays address topics as diverse as modern feminism and male-female interactions; George Orwell and the dystopic mis-use of science and technology; C.S. Lewis and Christianity; and Booker T. Washington, Frederick Douglass, and slavery, all the while addressing the foundational theme of the book, Rand's application of traditional American rugged individualism to contemporary story telling.

IBM SPSS for Introductory Statistics is designed to help students learn how to analyze and interpret research. In easy-to-understand language, the authors show readers how to choose the appropriate statistic based on the design, and to interpret outputs appropriately. There is such a wide variety of options and statistics in SPSS that knowing which ones to use and how to interpret the outputs can be difficult. This book assists students with these challenges.Comprehensive and user-friendly, this book prepares readers for each step in the research process: design, entering and checking data, testing assumptions, assessing reliability and validity, computing descriptive and inferential parametric and nonparametric statistics, and writing about results. Dialog windows and SPSS syntax, along with the output, are provided. Several realistic data sets are used to solve the chapter problems and are available as an online resource. This edition includes:• Updated chapters and screenshots• Additional SPSS work problems• Callout boxes for each chapter, indicating crucial elements of APA style and referencing outputs.IBM SPSS for Introductory Statistics is an invaluable supplemental (or lab text) book for students. In addition, this book and its companion, IBM SPSS for Intermediate Statistics, are useful as guides/reminders to faculty and professionals regarding the specific steps to take to use SPSS and/or how to use and interpret parts of SPSS with which they are unfamiliar.
