At the end of book one, the members of the community were finally feeling secure as the plans they made are now complete and they are living securely behind their newly constructed wall. They've got food, water, shelter, and enough guns to protect them from just about everything. All seems to be going well until Frank contacts them from Ohio to let them know they've been attacked and had to flee from his farm. Justin and his team leave the safety of the community and head towards Toledo to save Frank and his people. Even though they have a solid plan, things go wrong. Ziggy is wounded, Parka is missing, and Captain Roberts has become too big a threat to ignore. A trip to Frank's farm to deal with him one last time becomes a priority. Back at the school work has begun to make room for more people, and a trip to Port Huron and new friendships made there put them directly in the path of a motorcycle gang that wants to take everything for themselves. Soon the attacks against them begin. Jessica and Gary will lead their team as they fight to keep everything they've worked for and built without Justin and his team of trained men.

Sharon Cardino loved to read. One of her favorite genres was post-apocalyptic fiction, and she read about the end of the world and those trying to survive often. She never thought she'd need to draw on the knowledge she'd gained from those books for her own survival. Or anyone else's. Sharon and Dan Connelly are returning with their fifth-grade classes from a five-day camping trip when the warning is given. They pulled into the school and immediately hear the news; nuclear war has begun. Knowing there isn't much time to prepare, they rush anyone that has nowhere else to go inside and take shelter in the school basement. Sharon and Dan get lucky. The people that they're stranded with have many of the skills they'll need to survive. George is an electrician and Patrick and environmental engineer. Between the two they know how to get the green energy systems going, Mark is a contractor and can build or fix just about anything with the right tools, and Charles has just left the military and will take care of their security. Over the next few months, they'll face many obstacles, including a terrible gang that kidnaps and sells women and children. They'll have to work together to secure the area to keep them safe as many people join their group. They're determined to live an honest life and build a new community, or die trying

With an estimated human population prevalence of 1:2000, Velo-Cardio-Facial Syndrome (VCFS) is the second-most common multiple anomaly syndrome in humans and almost all children with the syndrome have speech and language impairments that are generally recognized to be complex and difficult to treat. To demonstrate and to provide clinicians with expert guidance, the authors have produced a comprehensive two-volume set with a combination of text and video demonstrating the clinical features of Velo-Cardio-Facial Syndrome (VCFS); the communication phenotype in VCFS; the natural history of speech and language in VCFS; diagnostic procedures necessary for assessing speech and language disorders in VCFS; the treatment of speech and language impairment in VCFS; and outcomes, demonstrated by video on an accompanying CD-ROM to Volume II. Volume II of this set opens with information of aspects of speech and language and the difficulties most often associated with VCFS. Authors also consider how these difficulties interact with each other. Chapter two describes the aspects of articulation and resonance, how they are best evaluated, and on surgical management. In Chapter three, general principles are outlined on how to make articulation therapy successful for children with cleft palate, VCFS, or both, many of which apply to language therapy and other behaviors, as well. The last chapter offers insights into prevention of the abnormal articulation patterns that tend to develop and how to guide children through stages of language development. The DVD includes all images from the book, along with 80 video clips that present normal and abnormal conditions and illustrate anomalies in VCFS through nasopharyngoscopy and videofluoroscopy examples.

Winner of the Christopher Award: This bestseller tells the inspirational true story of a girl with cerebral palsy and the mother who wouldn’t give up on her. In 1940, when Karen Killilea was born three months premature and developed cerebral palsy, doctors encouraged her parents to put her in an institution and forget about her. At the time, her condition was considered untreatable, and institutionalization was the only recourse. But in a revolutionary act of faith and love, the Killileas never gave up hope that Karen could lead a successful life. Written by Karen’s mother, Marie, this memoir is a profound and heartwarming personal account of a young mother’s efforts to refute the medical establishment’s dispiriting advice, and her daughter’s extraordinary triumph over seemingly insurmountable odds. Marie’s activism spread awareness of the mistreatment of disabled people in America and led to the formation of multiple foundations, including United Cerebral Palsy. A larger-than-life story, Karen tells of a family’s courage, patience, and struggle in the face of extreme difficulty. The New York Times wrote, “You’ll want to read it most for Karen’s own words: ‘I can walk, I can talk. I can read. I can write. I can do anything.’”

Karen Horney (1885-1952) is regarded by many as one of the most important psychoanalytic thinkers of the twentieth century. Her early work, in which she quarreled with Freud's views on female psychology, established her as the first great psychoanalytic feminist. In her later years, she developed a sophisticated theory of her own which provided powerful explanations of human behavior that have proved to be widely applicable. Yet through these years of intellectual achievement, Horney struggled with emotional problems. This engrossing study of Horney's life and work draws on newly discovered materials to explore the relation between her personal history and the evolution of her ideas.Bernard J. Paris argues that Horney's inner struggles—in particular her compulsive need for men—induced her to embark on a search for self-understanding, which she recorded first in her diaries and then in her covertly autobiographical psychoanalytic writings. Although this search brought Horney only partial relief from her problems, it led her to profound and original insights into the human psyche. Paris describes Horney's life—her childhood and adolescence in Germany, marriage to Oskar Horney, motherhood, analysis and self-analysis, emigration to the United States, founding of the American Institute for Psychoanalysis, ostracism by the psychoanalytic establishment, and her many romantic liaisons. At the same time he examines the various stages of Horney's thought, showing how her experiences influenced her ideas. Focusing particularly on Horney's later work, Paris shows her mature theory to be an important contribution to the study of literature, biography, gender and culture, as well as to psychoanalysis and psychology.
A PITCHFORK MUSIC BOOK OF THE YEARA radical, literary and intimate insight into one of the twentieth century's most vital vocalists. 'Tongson serves up a number of astute observations about fantasy, projection, longing, normalcy, and aberrance.' MAGGIE NELSON'Deftly weaves memoir, history, and cultural criticism to highlight the dynamic relationship between artists and listeners.'PITCHFORKIn the '60s and '70s, America's music scene was marked by raucous excess, reflected in the tragic overdoses of young superstars such as Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. At the same time, the uplifting harmonies and sunny lyrics that propelled Karen Carpenter and her brother, Richard, to international fame belied a different sort of tragedy - the underconsumption that led to Karen's death at age thirty-two from the effects of an eating disorder. In Why Karen Carpenter Matters, Karen Tongson (whose parents named her after the pop icon) interweaves the story of the singer's rise to fame in the 1960s and '70s with her own trans-Pacific journey between the Philippines - where imitations of American pop styles flourished - and Karen Carpenter's home ground of Southern California. Tongson reveals why the Carpenters' chart-topping, seemingly white-washed musical fantasies of 'normal love' have profound significance for her - as well as for other people of colour, LGBT+ communities, and anyone outside the mainstream culture usually associated with Karen Carpenter's legacy. This hybrid of memoir and biography excavates the destructive perfectionism at the root of the Carpenters' sound, while finding the beauty in the singer's all-too-brief life.'Engrossing . . . a triumphant delight.' 4COLUMNS'Heartfelt . . . excellent . . . breathtaking.' EXCLAIM!'Will resonate with readers who have never even heard of Carpenter.' A failing romance. A Sweet Deal. A Little Girl Lost. And Found. Ms. Sharon Silverina Langhorn was set in her ways. And why shouldn't she be? A product of New York City in the 1970s, she had seen the sputtering of the Hippies' Utopian promise of freedom and equality, and the rise of the moronic robotic Yuppies. Pettiness and doubt seemed ever present in her life, sniping at her from behind every small victory. So when real estate lawyer and Good Jewish Son Leonard Rothstein offered her the price of a lifetime on a veritable mansion up in the twin towns of Tug Hill and Old Forge, nestled near the foot of the Adirondacks, she knew no man, or woman for that matter, would stand in her way. But then there was Karen... Lovingly restored from his original handwritten notes, KAREN'S CLOSET is the 1996 novel by artist, musician and underground filmmaker Mario Rienzo, who died of cancer in 2017. The publication of this book fulfills a deathbed promise made to him by ICONICIDE frontman Chris/the Antimessiah.
