Plant Evolution

Plant Evolution

Karl J. Niklas

University of Chicago Press
2016
nidottu
Although plants comprise more than 90% of all visible life, and land plants and algae collectively make up the most morphologically, physiologically, and ecologically diverse group of organisms on earth, books on evolution instead tend to focus on animals. This organismal bias has led to an incomplete and often erroneous understanding of evolutionary theory. Because plants grow and reproduce differently than animals, they have evolved differently, and generally accepted evolutionary views as, for example, the standard models of speciation often fail to hold when applied to them. Tapping such wide-ranging topics as genetics, gene regulatory networks, phenotype mapping, and multicellularity, as well as paleobotany, Karl J. Niklas's Plant Evolution offers fresh insight into these differences. Following up on his landmark book The Evolutionary Biology of Plants in which he drew on cutting-edge computer simulations that used plants as models to illuminate key evolutionary theories Niklas incorporates data from more than a decade of new research in the flourishing field of molecular biology, conveying not only why the study of evolution is so important, but also why the study of plants is essential to our understanding of evolutionary processes. Niklas shows us that investigating the intricacies of plant development, the diversification of early vascular land plants, and larger patterns in plant evolution is not just a botanical pursuit: it is vital to our comprehension of the history of all life on this green planet.
Plant Allometry

Plant Allometry

Karl J. Niklas

University of Chicago Press
1994
sidottu
Allometry, the study of the growth rate of an organism's parts in relation to the whole, has produced various results in research on animals. This text applies allometry to studies of the evolution, morphology, physiology and reproduction of plants. The author covers a broad spectrum of plant life, from unicellular algae to towering trees, including fossil as well as extant taxa. He examines the relation between organic size and variations in plant form, metabolism, reproduction and evolution, and draws on the zoological literature to develop allometric techniques for the peculiar problems of plant height, the relation between body mass and body length, and size-correlated variations in rates of growth. For readers unfamiliar with the basics of allometry, an appendix explains basic statistical methods. This text should be useful reading for botanists interested in an original, quantitative approach to plant evolution and function, and for zoologists who want to learn more about the value of allometric techniques for studying evolution.

The Evolutionary Biology of Plants

The Evolutionary Biology of Plants

Karl J. Niklas

University of Chicago Press
1997
nidottu
This text provides a comprhensive synthesis of modern evolutionary biology as it relates to plants. It recounts the saga of plant life from its origins to the radiation of the flowering plants. Through computer-generated "walks" the book arrives at plant forms strikingly similar to actual living plants and those of the distant past, showing how living plants might have evolved. It concludes with an extended consideration of molecular biology and paleontology.
Plant Biomechanics

Plant Biomechanics

Karl J. Niklas

University of Chicago Press
1992
nidottu
In this first comprehensive treatment of plant biomechanics, Karl J. Niklas analyzes plant form and provides a far deeper understanding of how form is a response to basic physical laws. He examines the ways in which these laws constrain the organic expression of form, size, and growth in a variety of plant structures, and in plants as whole organisms, and he draws on the fossil record as well as on studies of extant species to present a genuinely evolutionary view of the response of plants to abiotic as well as biotic constraints. Well aware that some readers will need an introduction to basic biomechanics or to basic botany, Niklas provides both, as well as an extensive glossary, and he has included a number of original drawings and photographs to illustrate major structures and concepts. This volume emphasizes not only methods of biomechanical analysis but also the ways in which it allows one to ask, and answer, a host of interesting questions. As Niklas points out in the first chapter, "From the archaic algae to the most derived multicellular terrestrial plants, from the spectral properties of light-harvesting pigments in chloroplasts to the stacking of leaves in the canopies of trees, the behavior of plants is in large part responsive to and intimately connected with the physical environment. In addition, plants tend to be exquisitely preserved in the fossil record, thereby giving us access to the past." Its biomechanical analyses of various types of plant cells, organs, and whole organisms, and its use of the earliest fossil records of plant life as well as sophisticated current studies of extant species, make this volume a unique and highly integrative contribution to studies of plant form, evolution, ecology, and systematics.

From Galileo, who used the hollow stalks of grass to demonstrate the idea that peripherally located construction materials provide most of the resistance to bending forces, to Leonardo da Vinci, whose illustrations of the parachute are alleged to be based on his study of the dandelion's pappus and the maple tree's samara, many of our greatest physicists, mathematicians, and engineers have learned much from studying plants. A symbiotic relationship between botany and the fields of physics, mathematics, engineering, and chemistry continues today, as is revealed in Plant Physics. The result of a long-term collaboration between plant evolutionary biologist Karl J. Niklas and physicist Hanns-Christof Spatz, Plant Physics presents a detailed account of the principles of classical physics, evolutionary theory, and plant biology in order to explain the complex interrelationships among plant form, function, environment, and evolutionary history. Covering a wide range of topics - from the development and evolution of the basic plant body and the ecology of aquatic unicellular plants to mathematical treatments of light attenuation through tree canopies and the movement of water through plants' roots, stems, and leaves - Plant Physics is destined to inspire students and professionals alike to traverse disciplinary membranes.

Goethe's History of Science

Goethe's History of Science

Karl J. Fink

Cambridge University Press

Being familiar with Goethe's Faust story, students of Western thought will not be surprised to learn that Goethe was also a scientist, philosopher and historian. This book is about the interdisciplinary activities of his mid-life (1790–1810) when he researched optics, colour theory and plant morphology, and at the same time contributed to the growing literature in the history and philosophy of science. In Goethe's writings, Karl J. Fink finds a scientist examining the junctures of nature, the boundary conditions where growth and change occur. These topics of transition also define his approach to the history of science, where the gaps between visible states challenge the historian to search for metaphors that bridge discontinuities. Fink concludes his study with Goethe's views on the possibility of a teleology of science, looking at those writings in which Goethe explores how the scientist of today projects and directs the science of tomorrow.
Reconstructing the Roman Republic

Reconstructing the Roman Republic

Karl-J. Hölkeskamp

Princeton University Press
2010
sidottu
In recent decades, scholars have argued that the Roman Republic's political culture was essentially democratic in nature, stressing the central role of the 'sovereign' people and their assemblies. Karl-J. Holkeskamp challenges this view in Reconstructing the Roman Republic, warning that this scholarly trend threatens to become the new orthodoxy, and defending the position that the republic was in fact a uniquely Roman, dominantly oligarchic and aristocratic political form. Holkeskamp offers a comprehensive, in-depth survey of the modern debate surrounding the Roman Republic. He looks at the ongoing controversy first triggered in the 1980s when the 'oligarchic orthodoxy' was called into question by the idea that the republic's political culture was a form of Greek-style democracy, and he considers the important theoretical and methodological advances of the 1960s and 1970s that prepared the ground for this debate. Holkeskamp renews and refines the 'elitist' view, showing how the republic was a unique kind of premodern city-state political culture shaped by a specific variant of a political class. He covers a host of fascinating topics, including the Roman value system; the senatorial aristocracy; competition in war and politics within this aristocracy; and the symbolic language of public rituals and ceremonies, monuments, architecture, and urban topography. Certain to inspire continued debate, Reconstructing the Roman Republic offers fresh approaches to the study of the republic while attesting to the field's enduring vitality.
The Divorce of Lothar II

The Divorce of Lothar II

Karl J. Heidecker

"She declares, so the bishops will write in their report on the council, that she is unworthy to continue as a married woman. 'Before God and his angels' she bares her heart and confesses to them 'every secret relating to the rumor that had arisen.' The 'rumor'—as will become apparent—concerns her sexual relations with her brother. True, the 'inner wound' which she 'confesses' to God and the bishops was not dealt her of her own volition but under duress, but it is in any event so terrible that she no longer feels herself worthy to share a royal or a marital bed or to marry anyone at all. The bishops and abbots allow her, as she had supposedly requested, to enter a convent."—from The Divorce of Lothar II The Divorce of Lothar II illuminates the origin and development of Western notions of marriage and divorce and the separation of church and state in the context of a notorious royal divorce in late Carolingian Europe. In 857, Lothar II, king of Lotharingia, decided to divorce Theutberga—either because she had allegedly engaged in an incestuous liaison with her brother or simply because Lothar had wished to marry his concubine Waldrada. Karl Heidecker's dramatic and engaging narrative untangles the chaos that resulted: two popes, a host of often quarreling bishops, and Lothar's conniving uncles soon became involved in an epic struggle that did not end even with the death of Lothar. The extraordinary series of events sheds light on the fact that the laws on marriage and divorce were still uncertain. The Church itself was hardly unified in its approach, and its efforts to formulate and impose rules repeatedly foundered against the political machinations characteristic of the Carolingian world. In The Divorce of Lothar II, Heidecker not only discusses the legal aspects of the case but also pays much attention to the often heavy-handed ways in which the players of the story achieved their goals. This ninth-century scandal becomes a study of family dynamics, changing values, and the tenuous relationships between kings, nobles, and bishops around the topic of royal marriage. Though the drama ended with no clear resolution of the Church's position, Lothar's quest is revealed as an early chapter in the emergence of the belief that marriage rests on the personal will of the partners, is monogamous, and should not be dissolved.

"What fun What a page-turner Couldn't put it down. I zipped through this book in record time. Plot is bizarre, characters are fascinating, and the dialogue is all snap-crackle-pop. I want the next one NOW "Barbara Harper (Los Angeles, Ca.) I just loved your book. At first I thought it was a straight-up murder/mystery, but when that weird cocker spaniel showed up I realized there was much more going on; and I must tell you it was a riot reading all the twists and turns and the trouble Jozeph Picasso got into. I couldn't stop reading. Your next book, Alien Biz is eagerly awaited. Dinah Watkins, Carmel, IndianaA note on living in LA: It's the competition for showbiz jobs that makes living in LA so harsh. Everyone is looking to survive from job to job and part of the complex reality is keeping the other person from getting what you want. When you visit you are treated kindly, but once you move to LA you are just at the same table reaching for that perceived last piece of pie. It's that sense of being on the outside looking in on a showbiz career that I based Jozeph Picasso Alien Trilogy - Filmmaking Adventures on. I twisted it into a sci-fi adventure to keep those who know that I know from breaking my legs for telling it in print. But in truth, the only true way to beat LA is to be that person who creates jobs for others based upon your perceived talents, the image, that persona, you've created for yourself. Then you are wanted and needed to keep food on the table for others. But don't let that fool you. Keeping food on the table for those below you is an everlasting struggle, yet an honor, but keep food on the grand table of those above you, and suddenly you are the golden child and life seems to be a gift, even if it's just to make their lives work better as their irreplaceable assistant. In either case, it's the smart ones who know that to stay relevant in LA you have to keep reinventing yourself daily, even in the slightest way, and creating that air of importance and better than thou, or yes being a jerk, is just part of keeping your feet out of the La Brea Tar Pits - the real story under the Sun and Palm postcards of living in LA.Karl J. 5 Star Amazon Review July 21, 2013 - byDale MalisiakBeing of Polish ancestry, I was drawn to this book. Being a fan of gangster films, books didn't hurt either. I wasn't disappointed.Polish -vs- Italian gangsters. Interesting. Introducing THE POLISH GANGA must have in any library.A classic in the making, The Polish Gang delivers from laugh to bullet. A must read for American history buffs, action adventure hounds and love story fans The Polish Gang takes you deep into the heart of the Roaring Twenties. It violently shakes your emotions with both good and evil characters. Often lighthearted, yet tenderly thoughtful, Karl J. Niemiec clearly captures a Runyonesque sense of humor. Back Cover: In the grips of the "Roaring Twenties" Detroit was wide open to bootleggers and murderers. Dollars by the fistful were for the taking by anyone strong, cunning and murderous enough to chance dying for them. A city in a stupor, gone mad with drink, where blood ran at the drop of rum, Detroit became a civilization taken over by strong-armed gang members. During this time of social unrest, at the very height of prohibition, there existed - now only in old-timers' porch swing tales that grow mysteriously dim as time slips by - a small band of young men known as The Polish Gang. Just what happened to The Polish Gang? Where did they go? And why do so few people remember? And why, in a time of such profound documentation and national scrutiny of one city is there but one small newsprint article hinting about this elusive band of young men? These mysteries and more are answered in The Polish Gang.Inside Flap: Though this story is a complete work of fiction loosely based on my grandfather's family, the naked girl in the back seat of my pop's convertible on the front lawn of Michal's Bar was not. This is a 'what if' she was promised to someone else - a love story set in 1929 Detroit.Inspired by the antics of my pop, Bronislaus Niemiec.
