We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. With those words, The United States took the first steps toward an idea of Liberty, where individuals ruled themselves and enjoyed the protection of their rights. It was a new idea. This book is a work of philosophy, and as such, it is detestable, for it requires more than the simple reason of asking individuals to rediscover themselves. It will, must, fly in the face of what has grown from the sewer of the political landscapes and been allowed to climb into existence as fear and obscured with myopic egalitarianism where we lost our nature.
