Maureen doesn't plan to repeat the mistakes of her divorced parents. In the 1960's, she and her siblings seek passage from their trauma and a town that thrives on the poultry industry. Maureen pursues photography as a longterm commitment. But in her personal life, she enjoys romance and explores relationships until she ponders real reasons for avoiding marriage. Eventually this leads to a depression that she feels her career can conquer. When a man she would readily date hires her at a magazine and with work that revives her, her future is imperiled. This subtly psychological novel covers thirty years during a shift in society's approach to relationships. With Minnesota settings, the book's comic relief reflects that resource in Maureen.
Unbeknown to Dawn, her grandfather has shot an old swan out of mercy. In their coastal Alaskan town, her father buys the swan pelt, preventing her Uncle Alex, a fur trader, from selling it for export. Dawn's father surprises her part-Aleut mother with a hat she helped to make and also with an idea to catch poachers. Shooting swans has become illegal but Alaska is a territory and Prohibition occupies the Sheriff. Dawn and her mother become involved with suspicious inquiries about the swan bonnet besides its haunting effect. Because Dawn's grandparents see the swans first, Dawn agrees to secretly watch the migration with the deputy sheriff's son. But after she and her mother encounter women from a ship and find out about a hunting party, they ride to the inlet. There are townspeople roving the shore too but who is the vigilante and who is the poacher?

There's nothing quite like a real-life mystery, and The Good Fight, written by Katherine Roth, M.D. and her psychologist husband, Greg Holmes, Ph.D., pushes all the right page-turner buttons. In 2004, Greg was diagnosed with a rare and deadly cancer of the sinuses. While undertaking traditional radiation and chemo treatments, Katherine spent hundreds of hours researching alternative therapies, therapies that were uniformly scorned by the doctors they worked with - doctors who also refused to supply any hope for a positive outcome. Contains nutritional and supplement information, plus recipes and schedules. We may never know if there was a single ingredient or many, but what we do know is that not a single doctor of our acquaintance during the fight ever asked us how we did it. As doctors ourselves, we find that extremely disturbing. We believe that people are hungry for more holistic treatment. We feel that healers who work to find ways to use natural substances, along with chemotherapy and radiation, to make treatment less toxic and more effective should be respected, and we encourage anyone with cancer to seek out those who are passionate and knowledgeable about this growing area of research. -Greg Holmes and Katherine Roth The Good Fight goes well beyond the personal struggle of the single patient as he fights for his survival when confronted by cancer. The book offers up a hard-hitting critique of currently accepted mainstream cancer therapies that will no doubt prove enlightening for many. The Good Fight puts the notion of self-advocacy in cancer therapy as being perhaps the most powerful therapy of all. -David Perlmutter, MD, author of New York Times Bestseller, Grain Brain - The Surprising Truth About Wheat, Carbs and Sugar - Your Brain's Silent Killers The Good Fight is a wonderful story of how love, integrative medicine and hope can lead to exceptionally positive outcomes in cancer patients. The intensely personal story leads us from the diagnosis of a rare untreatable type of cancer, through the sometimes painful process of treatment and through to a surprisingly successful outcome. This story is worth reading by everyone who is a cancer patient or loves a person dealing with a diagnosis of cancer. -Paul Reilly, ND, The Seattle Cancer and Wellness Center, co-author of How to Prevent and Treat Cancer With Natural Medicine Everyone is affected directly by cancer in loved ones or themselves and indirectly by exorbitant cancer care costs. The Good Fight reveals for everyone in intimate and inspiring detail how empowering it is to take charge of your life with cancer for both care receivers and caregivers. It is filled with practical ways to complement conventional cancer care and increase its effectiveness by shifting the focus from just killing cancer cells to strengthening your body's immune system so that it can stop the formation of cancer cells. Jack C. Westman, M.D., Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry, University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, President, Wisconsin Cares, Inc.
