Katie Bickham's poems, set on a Louisiana plantation from 1811 through 2005, speak through the imagined voices of slaves, masters, mistresses, servants, and children. Focused on events that take place in a single room within the plantation home, Belle Mar, she offers an unflinching portrayal of the atrocities that form an undeniable part of Louisiana's history. The fully rounded characters she evokes allow readers to contemplate the social forces that shaped a slave-holding society and perpetuated injustices long after abolition. Tell me, Mother, how to remember you, what name to call you and what to absolve. Tell me how to live on this land. How many times must I scour and sun the long line of our lives until the water runs clean. -from ""Parlor 2012

Main Street is bustling in Snowberry, Minnesota, and nobody knows that better than the owner of the iconic bakery, the Liberty Belle. Handed the key to her namesake at barely twenty-one, Liberty has worked day and night to keep her parents' legacy alive. Now, three years later, she's a hotter mess than the batch of pies baking in her industrial-sized oven. Photographer Bram Alexander has had his viewfinder focused on the heart of one woman since returning to Snowberry. For the last three years she's kept him at arm's length, but all bets are off when he finds her injured and alone on the bakery floor. Liberty found falling in love with Bram easy, but convincing her tattered heart to trust him was much harder. Armed with small town determination and a heart of gold, Bram shows Liberty frame-by-frame how learning to trust him is as easy as pie.

The Invention of Miracles: Language, Power, and Alexander Graham Bell's Quest to End Deafness
Finalist for the PEN/Jacqueline Bograd Weld Award for Biography Finalist for the Mark Lynton History Prize "Meticulously researched, crackling with insights, and rich in novelistic detail" (Steve Silberman), this "provocative, sensitive, beautifully written biography" (Sylvia Nasar) tells the true--and troubling--story of Alexander Graham Bell's quest to end deafness. "Researched and written through the Deaf perspective, this marvelously engaging history will have us rethinking the invention of the telephone." --Jaipreet Virdi, PhD, author of Hearing Happiness: Deafness Cures in History We think of Alexander Graham Bell as the inventor of the telephone, but that's not how he saw his own career. As the son of a deaf woman and, later, husband to another, his goal in life from adolescence was to teach deaf students to speak. Even his tinkering sprang from his teaching work; the telephone had its origins as a speech reading machine. The Invention of Miracles takes a "stirring" (The New York Times Book Review), "provocative" (The Boston Globe), "scrupulously researched" (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette) new look at an American icon, revealing the astonishing true genesis of the telephone and its connection to another, far more disturbing legacy of Bell's: his efforts to suppress American Sign Language. Weaving together a dazzling tale of innovation with a moving love story, the book offers a heartbreaking account of how a champion can become an adversary and an enthralling depiction of the deaf community's fight to reclaim a once-forbidden language. Katie Booth has been researching this story for more than fifteen years, poring over Bell's papers, Library of Congress archives, and the records of deaf schools around America. But she's also lived with this story for her entire life. Witnessing the damaging impact of Bell's legacy on her family would set her on a path that overturned everything she thought she knew about language, power, deafness, and the telephone.

René Lalique: Selections from the Steven and Roslyn Shulman Collection introduces the artistic innovations and legacy of renowned French Art Deco artist René Lalique. Born outside of Paris in 1860, Lalique was recognized as one of France's foremost Art Nouveau jewelry designers before turning to the material of glass in the early twentieth century. By the 1920s, Lalique's glass artwork embraced the new ideas and technologies that swept the United States and Europe. He brought an artistic aesthetic to new industries such as automotive and electrical products, as well as to new clienteles including the rising middle class and the increasingly independent female consumer. His legacy has influenced subsequent generations of designers and artists, in particular contemporary artists working in the medium of glass. Lalique's considerable imagination and eye for design is evident in the Steven and Roslyn Shulman Collection, one of the most comprehensive selections of Lalique glass in the United States. The collection features perfume bottles, vases, automobile mascots, and a wealth of other objects that exemplify the Art Deco style and celebrate Lalique's sense of design.
