A Stage IV cancer survivor reflects on treatment and recovery in this inspiring memoir that reveals the biases of the healthcare system--and the power of community. New Year's Eve 2020 was supposed to be a turning point to better days for twenty-nine-year-old Katie Coleman. Instead, she found herself in the ER processing the earth-shattering news of a stage IV cancer diagnosis, one that had come after years of being assured she was "too young for cancer" and a repeated misdiagnosis of anxiety. Too Young for Cancer tells the story of Katie's journey from diagnosis with an ultrarare cancer through treatment, recovery, and a life-altering shift in perspective. Katie starts her journey shy, timid, and frightened of an intimidating medical world, but as she learns how to advocate for herself, she faces her own mortality with bravery and finds herself at top cancer institutions arguing her case for a radical and high-risk surgery that could change her life forever. With support from her husband, innovative doctors, and a diverse community of cancer survivors, Katie finds her life's purpose to advocate not only for herself but also for others who are fighting just as hard for their lives. Too Young for Cancer highlights the absolute best and worst in healthcare and uncovers the silver linings and beauty of humanity filling the space in between.

"Whether you’re sunbathing at the beach, killing time waiting for the subway, or flying abroad for summer vacation, AN editors have compiled new architecture and design titles for you." — The Architect's Newspaper Environmental Activism by Design, a monograph by architects and educators Coleman Coker and Sarah Gamble, challenges designers to actively engage the environmental crisis through their work, while articulating an optimistic, tangible means to pursue community good and environmental justice through design activism and engagement. The authors assert that in addition to greener buildings, cheaper housing, and technological fixes, we must rethink pedagogy and praxis so that every single architecture graduate can define equity and transform the profession. Environmental Activism by Design centres on the award-winning Gulf Coast DesignLab at the University of Texas, which works directly with clients and stakeholders to produce spaces for the public to learn and researchers to undertake their environmental work. Environmental Activism by Design asks readers to challenge themselves, as agents of social equity, environmental justice, and climate action, to pursue operative practices and transformation rather than mere keywords and consensus.

The Secret Wars of Judi Bari

In l990, a car bomb in Oakland almost killed radical Earth First! leader Judi Bari and her passenger, a co-leader and onetime lover, Darryl Cherney. The FBI accused the pair of transporting the explosive device knowingly as part of a violent campaign of "ecotage." From her hospital bed, Bari charged that the timber interests of Northern California and the FBI had tried to kill her. The car bomb and the competing conspiracy theories about who was responsible made Bari a national figure; but she had long been a legendary figure among California activists. A veteran of the Vietnam War protests of the 1960s who moved to militant feminism and environmentalism after the war ended, Bari was involved in the radical eco-organization Earth First! by the mid-1980s and leading the fight against the logging companies on the Northern California coast. Not long before the attempt on her life, she had summoned young people from all over the country to join her in a crusade to save the remaining redwood forests of the Pacific Coast in a "Redwood Summer" based on the Mississippi Summer of the civil rights movement a quarter-century earlier. The Secret Wars of Judi Bari traces Bari's rise from college activist to a would-be Mother Jones of the Redwoods. Drawing on extensive interviews with Bari's friends, comrades and critics, Kate Coleman describes Bari's long struggle for selfhood against her communist parents and her husband (himself a former member of violent political groups); against those in her movement who felt that she was not radical enough; and ultimately against the FBI and the State of California. Judi Bari's wars continued until her death from cancer five years after the explosion that changed her life forever. In creating a dramatic portrait of a unique American life, Coleman takes the reader inside the radical politics that outlived the 1960s, and into the Earth First! movement and the back-to-nature counterculture of the North Coast of California. This is a world that Coleman has lived in herself and spent her career documenting as a writer. In The Secret Wars of Judi Bari she has produced a book that is at once a crime story, a social history, and a compelling biography of a woman at war with her world.

This is not a book of untested theories. Instead, it is written by practitioners for practitioners. Much of it is told through the voices of those who run programs and people who have taken advantage of them. While the issues the book addresses are profound, its take on the subject is optimistic.Between them, the authors have spent decades searching out and supporting effective practices. Even more critically, they have learned how to knit competing agencies and organizations into cohesive systems with coordinated missions. Their practical ideas will benefit a wide range of readers, from practitioners in the field to students and scholars of the American labor system.

Dynamic problems require dynamic collaboration and technology. Our communities today face difficult issues—such as climate change, access to health care, and homelessness—which are tangled, complicated, and constantly evolving. Coined “wicked problems” more than 40 years ago by the University of California’s professors Horst Rittel and C. West Churchman, these issues exceed the capacity of any one sector, instead demanding the kind of creative thinking, democratized engagement, and integrated action that come from government, nonprofits, businesses, and citizens working in concert. These different stakeholders, however, don’t always agree on the best approach, strategy, or goals. But their commonality in driving social outcomes relies on place: where problems are happening, where people need assistance and help defining the issues. Maps combine complex and relational information that can be visualized and analyzed to deal with these issues. When used with technological developments in data analytics, visualization, connectivity, and the Internet of Things (IoT), mapping can promote effective cross-sector collaboration. Written for citizens and city leaders, Collaborative Cities: Mapping Solutions to Wicked Problems guides readers into using location intelligence to derive public value from action. Co-authors Stephen Goldsmith (former mayor of Indianapolis and deputy mayor of New York) and Kate Markin Coleman (former executive vice president for branding and strategy at the YMCA) use their combined years of experience to analyze the best civic examples of geospatial technology working across cross-sector networks. Divided into eight chapters, Collaborative Cities addresses the formation, operation, and adaptation of cross-sector collaborations, including five chapters dedicated to specific wicked problems such as public safety, homelessness, and sustainability. Starting with Collaborative Cities, government officials, nonprofit leaders, and citizens alike who are acting for social value can learn how to use a geospatial approach to improve insight, trust, and the efficacy of their combined efforts to solve wicked problems.

New York Times Bestseller A no-holds-barred account of the rise--and dramatic stumble--of a media icon. In this probing portrait of a struggling news queen, bestselling author Edward Klein rips away the mask that has hidden the many faces of Katie Couric: the strong, independent woman and the needy wife and lover; the grieving widow famed for her kindness to others and the fiercely competitive diva; the consummate television interviewer and the stumbling network anchor.Drawing from scores of interviews with people who have never spoken openly about Couric before, Katie: The Real Story absorbingly chronicles Katie's rise to the top--from her early days at CNN to her nightly spot on CBS. You'll read about: Katie and her husband, Jay Monahan: "Jay had come to believe that the only thing that stood between Katie and divorce was her fear of negative publicity." Katie's diva behavior at CBS: "A technical problem left Katie standing without a script. . . . As soon as the red light on the top of the camera went off, she screamed. One of the executives said, 'Just a minute, Katie; the reason you make $15 million a year is to carry off these little glitches like a pro.'" Katie and her parents: "She constantly sought their] approval, but . . . they] were better at telling her what she had done wrong than what she had done right." Katie and Matt Lauer: "Matt had privately told several executives at NBC that he would quit his job if they signed up Katie for another four years."

When I woke up from surgery, I found my Mom and Dad hovering over my bed. The Adams and Rev. Parker were there, too. All of them had tears in their eyes. They had also looked relieved. Had something happened during surgery? Before I could ask aloud the question that I was asking myself, my parents were gently hugging and kissing me. Tearfully, they had also told me that my heart had stopped for two minutes during surgery. With that said, it had been decided in the end that the doctors would keep me in the hospital two weeks longer than expected. For the next two years, I endured countless chemo and radiation, as well as surgeries. During this time, I also attended homeschool. Even though I wished I could join my friends in regular school, I enjoyed being home-schooled. At the time it was the best option for me. After two of chemo treatments, radiation, and surgeries, it was finally time for me to be on remission. It was also time for me to rejoin my friends in regular school. This truly made me excited more than anything. Two years later, I am still on remission and going strong. I am even continuing to thrive at my high school. Besides being the new captain of my dance team, I am also one of the most popular girls in my grade. I am also an honor student. Most importantly, however, my faith is unbreakable and strong. That in itself, is a true blessing to me.
