Maggie; Or, a Man and a Woman Walk Into a Bar
A Chinese American woman spins tragedy into comedy when her life falls apart in a taut, wry debut novel that grapples with grief, motherhood, and myths--perfect for fans of Joan Is Okay and Crying in H Mart. A man and a woman walk into a restaurant. The woman expects a lovely night filled with endless plates of samosas. Instead, she finds out her husband is having an affair with a woman named Maggie. A short while after, her chest starts to ache. She walks into an examination room, where she finds out the pain in her breast isn't just heartbreak--it's cancer. She decides to call the tumor Maggie. Unfolding in fragments over the course of the ensuing months, Maggie; Or, a Man and a Woman Walk Into a Bar follows the narrator as she embarks on a journey of grief, healing, and reclamation. She starts talking to Maggie (the tumor), getting acquainted with her body's new inhabitant. She overgenerously creates a "Guide to My Husband: A User's Manual" for Maggie (the other woman), hoping to ease the process of discovering her ex-husband's whims and quirks. She turns her children's bedtime stories into retellings of Chinese folklore passed down by her own mother, in an attempt to make them fall in love with their shared culture--and to maybe save herself in the process. In the style of Jenny Offill and the tradition of Nora Ephron's hilarious and devastating writing on heartbreak and womanhood, Maggie is a master class in transforming personal tragedy into a form of defiant comedy.

New York Times Bestseller A no-holds-barred account of the rise--and dramatic stumble--of a media icon. In this probing portrait of a struggling news queen, bestselling author Edward Klein rips away the mask that has hidden the many faces of Katie Couric: the strong, independent woman and the needy wife and lover; the grieving widow famed for her kindness to others and the fiercely competitive diva; the consummate television interviewer and the stumbling network anchor.Drawing from scores of interviews with people who have never spoken openly about Couric before, Katie: The Real Story absorbingly chronicles Katie's rise to the top--from her early days at CNN to her nightly spot on CBS. You'll read about: Katie and her husband, Jay Monahan: "Jay had come to believe that the only thing that stood between Katie and divorce was her fear of negative publicity." Katie's diva behavior at CBS: "A technical problem left Katie standing without a script. . . . As soon as the red light on the top of the camera went off, she screamed. One of the executives said, 'Just a minute, Katie; the reason you make $15 million a year is to carry off these little glitches like a pro.'" Katie and her parents: "She constantly sought their] approval, but . . . they] were better at telling her what she had done wrong than what she had done right." Katie and Matt Lauer: "Matt had privately told several executives at NBC that he would quit his job if they signed up Katie for another four years."

When I woke up from surgery, I found my Mom and Dad hovering over my bed. The Adams and Rev. Parker were there, too. All of them had tears in their eyes. They had also looked relieved. Had something happened during surgery? Before I could ask aloud the question that I was asking myself, my parents were gently hugging and kissing me. Tearfully, they had also told me that my heart had stopped for two minutes during surgery. With that said, it had been decided in the end that the doctors would keep me in the hospital two weeks longer than expected. For the next two years, I endured countless chemo and radiation, as well as surgeries. During this time, I also attended homeschool. Even though I wished I could join my friends in regular school, I enjoyed being home-schooled. At the time it was the best option for me. After two of chemo treatments, radiation, and surgeries, it was finally time for me to be on remission. It was also time for me to rejoin my friends in regular school. This truly made me excited more than anything. Two years later, I am still on remission and going strong. I am even continuing to thrive at my high school. Besides being the new captain of my dance team, I am also one of the most popular girls in my grade. I am also an honor student. Most importantly, however, my faith is unbreakable and strong. That in itself, is a true blessing to me.
