This book studies India’s foreign policy through the lens of Kautilya’s Arthashastra, an ancient Indian treatise on state and statecraft. It assesses the extent of influence of the foundational elements/core beliefs extrapolated from the Arthashastra on the nation’s international behaviour to understand the grand strategic preferences of independent India. The volume examines the basic realist and cultural underpinnings of statecraft such as Yogakshema (Political End Goal), Saptanga (Seven Elements of State), Sadgunyas (Six Measures of Foreign Policy), Rajdharma (Duty of a King), Rajamandala (Circle of kings), and Dharma (Order), mooted in the Arthashastra which have withstood the test of time and space. It evaluates the continuity of strategic cultural traits under the themes of nonalignment, bilateral relations with China and Pakistan, and nuclear policy. An important intervention in the study of India’s foreign policy, the book will be useful for scholars and researchers of foreign policy, defence policy, international relations, defence and strategic studies, political science, Indian political thought, political philosophy, classical literature, and South Asian studies.

This book examines in detail the strategic relevance of the Arthashastra. Attributed to the fourth century B.C., this classical treatise on state and statecraft rests at the intersection of political theory and international relations.Adopting a hermeneutic approach, the book discusses certain homologies related to concepts such as power, order, and morality. Underlining the conceptual value of the Arthashastra and classical texts such as Hitopdesha and Pancatantra, this volume highlights the non-western perspectives related to diplomacy and statecraft. It shows how a comparative analysis of these texts reveals a continuity rather than a change in the styles, tactics, and political strategies. The book also showcases the value these ancient texts can bring to the study of contemporary international relations and political theory. This volume will be of interest to students, scholars and teachers of political studies, Indian political thought, and philosophy, South Asian studies, political theory and international relations.

Around two thousand years ago there was a person of great intellect, influence, and motivation. We don't know much about his personal life, although there are many extraordinary legends about him. He was neither a warrior nor a ruler, nor a priest. He was a wise sage - a rishi - who rewrote two Vedic treatises, namely: Arthashastra and Artha Sutras. His name was Kautilya (a.k.a. Chanakya a.k.a. Vishnu Gupta a.k.a. Vishnu Sharma.) Kautilya's Arthashastra contains many vital principles of management, governance, and polity that can be used with high efficacy to the present day. They can provide keys to solving a great many problems threatening our new high-tech world order by nurturing responsible and effective leadership. Although there are several translations of Kautilya's Arthashastra, most of its in-depth knowledge and wisdom is neither properly understood nor utilized for various reasons. Also, much of its secrets remain hidden. Presenting his time-tested knowledge and wisdom with incisive insight for contemporary leadership, politics and diplomacy is the prime objective of this book series Kautilya: Understanding the Colossal Genius.

The ancient Indian text of Kautilya’s Arthasastra comes forth as a valuable non-Western resource for understanding contemporary International Relations (IR). However, Kautilya’s Arthasastra largely suffers from the problem of ‘presentism’, whereby present-day assumptions of the dominant theoretical models of Classical Realism and Neorealism are read back into it, thereby disrupting open reflections on Kautilya’s Arthasastra which could retrieve its ‘alternative assumptions’ and ‘unconventional traits’. This book attempts to enable Kautilya’s Arthasastra to break free from the problem of presentism – it does so by juxtaposing the elements of continuity and change that showed up at different junctures of the life-history of both ‘Kautilya’s Arthasastra’ and ‘Eurocentric IR’. The overall exploratory venture leads to a Kautilyan non-Western eclectic theory of IR – a theory which moderately assimilates miscellaneousresearch traditions of Eurocentric IR, and, in addition, delivers a few innovative features that could potentially uplift not only Indian IR, but also Global IR.

Kautilya who' In India itself, Kautilya is mentioned for reasons that are more sentimental and nationalistic than analytical and comparative with respect to the theoretical significance of his contributions to statecraft. In academic circles, Kautilya is labelled as the 'Indian Machiavelli', even though the Arthashastra was written some 1800 years prior to Machiavelli's Discorsi and Principe and is much broader in scope. This book brings the wisdom of Kautilya's text-a tour de force in strategic thinking-to the present political discourse, emphasizing the relevance of this ancient text to contemporary world affairs. Brilliant scholarly analysis complemented with in-depth academic enquiry gives this work an edge over all that has been written on Arthashastra so far. Mitra and Liebig move beyond romanticizing Kautilya and present to the reader one of the sharpest minds in history, unmatched in its knowledge of statecraft and a theory unparalleled in strategic thinking. A must-have guide to understanding both Kautilya and the intricacies of governance.

In this book, the author has tried to explain whether a pre-modern state policy strategist and author, Kautilya, who addressed statecraft in a scholarly fashion, might bear a meaning for contemporary management Studies. Kautilya, a near-contemporary of Aristotle and Alexander the Great, viewed administration as a central feature of statecraft. Kautilya's Arthashastra can be translated as 'Textbook of Statecraft and Political Economy'. It has in its core, diplomacy, and strategy and is an example of non-Western literature that should be read as part of the "realist" state administration. Its prescriptions are especially relevant for foreign policy today. The knowledge provided in it offers indispensable means for maintaining and expanding the security and power of the state. Through 15 case studies, this book explores Kautilya's doctrine of management, state intelligence and statecraft, as well as its contemporary relevance, in a 'scale-model' approach, as to demonstrate the validity and meaningfulness of pursuing research today on a broader scale, as well as with greater depth for management studies. A strong foundation is the key to any successful business - Your vision, your commitment, your purpose - all form the basis for an organisation. They are the all-important pillars, the most essential part of any building.

"Seldom make fun about the future of any person; irrespective of the present condition. Never underestimate the power of time; it turns even worthless coal into a priceless diamond. ""Speak the truth in such a way that it should be fair. Never speak that assumed truth, unfairly. Never speak untruth, even though it might be pleasant. This is the path of perennial Dharma.""One must never place excessive faith on one's Dhana (Wealth), Jana (People) and Yauvana (Youthfulness) for these three are the most transient in our lives - there today, gone tomorrow.""Pursuing happiness is but the nature of every creature. But there is no happiness without Dharma. Therefore, pursue Dharma.""Wealth cannot give happiness by itself. One has to understand that it is always a means, never an end. By recognizing wealth as an end, it becomes a source of misery. Wealth is temporary and unsteady. It moves from one to another. Greed drives people without the knowledge of wealth to destruction. Therefore, knowledge and wisdom are crucial in earning, retaining and dissipating wealth, righteously."Kautilya a.k.a. Chanakya

The transition from Campus-to-Corporate is often fraught with difficulties. Difficulty - not only in getting job - but also in adapting to the big differences between academic and work life. This book is supposed to become a trusted companion of a young student as he stands on this eventful transition from college to work. It differentiates itself from other books in this genre at least in two prominent ways. Firstly, it will help the reader not only prepare for the recruitment process but also cope with the challenges in the first few years at work. Secondly, unlike most other books in this genre, this book doesn't solely depend on personal experiences of the author, but also draws learning from the recent researches in the areas of neuroscience, psychology, and management science. Another interesting aspect of the book is numerous easy but powerful tools and formats for ready application in the field. This book is a must read for students in colleges as also for the fresh employees in their first year at work.
