The Policy of the Entente

The Policy of the Entente

Keith M. Wilson

Cambridge University Press
2009
pokkari
This collection of essays makes a major contribution to the growing debate on British foreign policy before the First World War, and mounts a sustained critique of the received interpretation that invites comparison with the work of Fritz Fischer on the foreign policy of Imperial Germany. The Policy of the Entente presents a realistic assessment of British priorities in the years before 1914, and considers the fundamental and conflicting pressures that determined the formulation of foreign policy. The author concludes that British policy, far from being increasingly Eurocentric, was emphatically imperial: indeed many of the difficulties faced by Britain's rulers stemmed from their inability to live up to this Imperial self-image.

Although much has been written about the conduct of the war in South Africa, very little has been written about how it was regarded on the world stage by powers both great and small. This collection of specially commissioned essays seeks for the first time to put the Boer War (1899-1902) in its international context. Each of the core chapters focuses on the perspective of one country (France, Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy, The Netherlands, Portugal, Russia, and the United States) and assesses the extent to which each national government tried to capitalize on Britain's embarrassment and distraction while often entangled in imperialist ventures of their own. The anglophobia of many of the nations' press, the activities of pro-Boer organizations, and the shaping of public and parliamentary opinion are examined alongside the real politics and diplomatic considerations that took precedence. In addition, there are summation chapters that examine both the origins of the war and its legacy for Britain's expansionist ambitions. Together these essays present the latest findings on a watershed in international relations that heralded substantive changes of attitude and policy on the part of national governments towards their dependencies and had far-reaching consequences for alliance systems and the international balance of power at the start of the twentieth century.

Cryptography is a vital technology that underpins the security of information in computer networks. This book presents a comprehensive introduction to the role that cryptography plays in supporting digital security for everyday technologies such as the internet, mobile phones, Wi-Fi networks, payment cards and cryptocurrencies. This book is intended to be introductory, self-contained and widely accessible. It is suitable for a first read on cryptography. Almost no prior knowledge of mathematics is required since the book deliberately avoids the details of the mathematical techniques underpinning cryptographic mechanisms. Instead, it concerns what a normal user or practitioner of cyber security needs to know about cryptography in order to understand the design and use of everyday cryptographic applications. This includes the implementation of cryptography and key management. By focusing on the fundamental principles of modern cryptography rather than the technical details of the latest technology, the main part of the book is relatively timeless. The application of these principles illustrated by considering a number of contemporary uses of cryptography. These include emerging themes, such as post-quantum cryptography and the increased demand for cryptographic tools supporting privacy. The book also considers the wider societal impact of use of cryptography, including ransomware and the challenge of balancing the conflicting needs of society and national security when using cryptography. A reader of this book will not only be able to understand the everyday use of cryptography, but also be able to interpret future developments in this fascinating and crucially important area of technology.

Drawing Out Leviathan

Drawing Out Leviathan

Keith M. Parsons

Indiana University Press
2001

" . . . are dinosaurs social constructs? Do we really know anything about dinosaurs? Might not all of our beliefs about dinosaurs merely be figments of the paleontological imagination? A few years ago such questions would have seemed preposterous, even nonsensical. Now they must have a serious answer." At stake in the "Science Wars" that have raged in academe and in the media is nothing less than the standing of science in our culture. One side argues that science is a "social construct," that it does not discover facts about the world, but rather constructs artifacts disguised as objective truths. This view threatens the authority of science and rejects science's claims to objectivity, rationality, and disinterested inquiry. Drawing Out Leviathan examines this argument in the light of some major debates about dinosaurs: the case of the wrong-headed dinosaur, the dinosaur "heresies" of the 1970s, and the debate over the extinction of dinosaurs. Keith Parsons claims that these debates, though lively and sometimes rancorous, show that evidence and logic, not arbitrary "rules of the game," remained vitally important, even when the debates were at their nastiest. They show science to be a complex set of activities, pervaded by social influences, and not easily reducible to any stereotype. Parsons acknowledges that there are lessons to be learned by scientists from their would-be adversaries, and the book concludes with some recommendations for ending the Science Wars.

Nietzsche and Modern Literature

Keith M. May

Nietzsche's work has greatly influenced twentieth-century ideas and culture, but four European writers may be regarded as particularly 'Nietzschean'. Keith May discusses parallels between Nietzsche and these four authors, emphasizing order of rank in Yeats; the qualities of Rilke's Angels as compared with those of the overman; Mann's explorations of the spiritual territory beyond good and evil, and Lawrence's treatment of will to power.
Why It's OK to Trust Science

Why It's OK to Trust Science

Why trust science? Why should science have more authority than "other ways of knowing?" Is science merely a social construct? Or even worse: a tool of oppression? This book boldly takes on these and other explosive questions—lodged by ideologues on the left and the right—and offers readers a well researched defense of science and a polemic addressed to its detractors. Why It’s OK to Trust Science critically examines the recent history of critiques of science, including those in academia from scholars like Bruno Latour, Simon Schaffer, and Thomas Kuhn. It then presents case studies drawn from recent advances in the field of dinosaur paleontology, showing how science generates objective knowledge, even during revolutionary episodes. The book next looks at how that same objective knowledge can be gained even when researching extremely complex issues, using climate science to distinguish between genuine skepticism –upon which science depends–from dogmatic denial. The book is for anyone who needs thoughtful, razor sharp responses to the detractors of science—whether they be anti-vaxxers, climate change deniers, profit-seeking businessmen, or published relativists in the knowledge-making industries. Key Features: Highly readable and accessible without oversimplifying the complexities of scientific researchExposes the many flaws of the "undertermination thesis"—the argument that indefinitely many hypotheses are compatible with any body of evidenceExplores whether moral and other value-laden questions can be answered by scienceIncludes three appendixes online: (1) Summary of The Structure of Scientific Revolutions; (2) Rorty on Losing the World; (3) 21 Facts in Support of Human-Caused Climate Change

Globular Cluster Systems

Globular Cluster Systems

Keith M. Ashman; Stephen E. Zepf

Cambridge University Press
2008
pokkari
Globular clusters are roughly spherical, densely packed groups of stars found around galaxies. Most globular clusters probably formed at the same time as their host galaxies. They therefore provide a unique fossil record of the conditions during the formation and early evolution of galaxies. This volume presents a comprehensive review of globular cluster systems. It summarizes their observed properties, and shows how these constrain models of the structure of stars, the formation and evolution of galaxies and globular clusters, and the age of the Universe. For graduate students and researchers, this volume provides the definitive reference on globular cluster systems.
Broken, Broke and Brought Back: Why Moral Failure Happens and How to Overcome It
Whether a pastor, church attendee, or just a person who is seeking to recover from a failed or failing marriage, this book will give insight and hope for restoration, renewal, forgiveness and a new start. Adultery can be grounds for divorce, but it has been our experience that adultery can also be grounds for restoration. Temptation lurks at the doorway of everyone but can be especially difficult for clergy to admit and seek help because of their position in the church and the community. This book is one pastor's journey of infidelity and how he fought back to find hope, healing, forgiveness and restoration both in his marriage and in the pulpit. Whether you are a pastor, an offended spouse or laymen, or simply looking for a unique gift for a pastor, this book is filled with honest reflection as well as helpful advice as to how to avoid some of the devil's snares, but also how to regain integrity and honesty in the marriage and church relationships if a pastor has fallen from grace.
