For more than 70 years, William Paton contributed his considerable energy and knowledge to the development of accounting thought. He was one of the early accounting educators to express the high purpose of accounting and its importance in the university, and he was among the early theorists in accounting to argue that accounting needed a coherent, theoretical structure that would guide the accountant in preparing financial statements. Yet a full account of his life, career, and ideas has not yet appeared. Kelly L. Williams and Howard J. Lawrence address this gap, painting an intimate and comprehensive portrait of this deeply influential figure. Their groundbreaking study not only explores major influences on Paton’s thoughts on accounting, but also shows how Paton was an active participant in the professional accounting organizations of his day, how early on he urged the societies to conduct research to develop a consistent and rational body of knowledge, and how, with other early scholars, he was instrumental in developing the first issues of The Accounting Review—a beginning that helped make the Review the outstanding publication it is today. Ultimately, the authors demonstrate why Paton received practically every major honor an accounting educator could receive, including recognition in 1987 by the AICPA as the “Educator of the Century.” As the only comprehensive study of Paton’s life and thought, this is a must-have for graduate students of accountancy and researchers of accounting history and theory, and it is of keen interest to anyone who wishes to develop their own research methodology and pedagogy through a study of one of the greatest thinkers and educators in the history of accountancy.

Following New Hampshire's independence from the colony of Massachusetts, Hampton residents petitioned the governor for a grant of a township and subsequently founded the small town of Kingston in 1694. Home to both Josiah Bartlett, the second signer of the Declaration of Independence, and the first Universalist church in America, Kingston was known for its moniker, the carriage town, due to the many horse-drawn carriage manufacturers, such as Walter S. Clark Carriages, B.D. Cilley Carriage Shop, and Kimball Carriage Factory. The dirt pathways that these horse-drawn carriages once traveled are long gone, but the buildings along those paths remain. The Kingston Plains along Main Street connects nearly 75 of these buildings with its route. It is also home to today's Kingston Days celebration. This event has endured the test of time, annually bringing townsfolk closer together to celebrate Kingston's lasting legacy.

Foreword by Jeff Kelley. Nevada's open spaces have long inspired complex responses from a population largely shaped by European sensibilities toward land and its uses. In Mapping the Empty Fox considers how eight of the state's most distinguished and innovative contemporary artists have responded to the harsh, enigmatic landscapes of the Great Basin and how, through their work, they have expressed and helped to define our attitudes toward the space we call the West. The artists are Jim McCormick, Rita Deanin Abbey, Dennis Parks, Walter McNamara, Robert Beckmann, Michael Heizer, Bill Barker, and Mary Ann Bonjorni.

Reconstructing the Slave

Reconstructing the Slave

Kelly L. Wrenhaven

Bristol Classical Press
2012
sidottu
Although the importance of slavery to Greek society has long been recognised, most studies have primarily drawn upon representations of slaves as sources of evidence for the historical institution, while there has been little consideration of what the representations can tell us about how the Greeks perceived slaves and why. Although historical reality clearly played a part in the way slaves were represented, Reconstructing the Slave stresses that this was not the primary purpose of these images, which reveal more about how slave-owners perceived or wanted to perceive slaves than the reality of slavery. Through an examination of lexical, visual and literary representations of slaves, the book considers how the image of the slave was used to justify, reinforce and naturalize slavery in ancient Greece.
