Navigating Polarities: Using Both/And Thinking to Lead Transformation
How do you do two seemingly opposite things at once? How can you be candid and diplomatic, provide structure and flexibility, keep things stable and lead change, and focus on organizational interests while simultaneously doing what's best for employees? Many approach these polarities with either/or thinking, but leaders, teams, and organizations that navigate them using a both/and mindset significantly outperform those who don't. The trick is knowing how.In their work with thousands of people across the globe, Brian Emerson and Kelly Lewis have seen the tension and stress polarities can create in relationships, teams, and in organizations. In this book, they share the practical tools to transform that tension into a positive driving force by expanding either/or thinking to include a both/and mindset.

Time spent in service to country, community, and family is never wasted nor forgotten. In 1978, Dick Haggmark died at the age of 47 after spending two and a half years in a semi-comatose state going from hospital to nursing home to veteran's hospital. He was injured at work and then suffered a massive heart attack and stroke that left him unable to speak or walk. When he was in his early 20s, he joined the Army. As a civilian he served as a volunteer fireman and auxiliary policeman for over 20 years. Just One Soldier is a book that contains 80 letters written by Dick in 1954 to his family while serving in the Korean War stationed in Japan. The book also contains the words of a diary written by Dick's mother covering the two and a half years just prior to his death. Photos, family memories, author commentary, and newspaper clippings are also included in the book. Get to know the young man through the letters home from just one soldier.

In 1914, Sir Ernest Shackleton set forth to make history with the first-ever crossing of the Antarctic continent. He sailed into the Weddell Sea aboard the Endurance, while a ship called the Aurora sailed into the Ross Sea to create a lifeline of vital food and fuel depots to supply the epic crossing. Yet all went tragically wrong when the Aurora broke free of her moorings in an Antarctic gale and stranded ten men ashore. Left with little more than the clothing on their backs and scavenged equipment, the men vowed to carry on in the face of impossible odds. Meanwhile the rest of the Aurora crew, cast adrift at the mercy of the elements, battled for survival. The lost men struggled to save themselves and carry out their mission with little hope of rescue.

Supporting Mission Among All Peoples Global Member Care (Volume 3): Stories and Strategies for Staying the Course is part of ongoing efforts over the past thirty years to shape and support the field of member care in mission. Blending case studies, personal narratives, and strategic insights from forty-four experienced colleagues from around the world, it offers an extensive look at member care approaches in various settings. This volume also highlights the importance of collaboration and cultural sensitivity in supporting vulnerable populations subject to conflicts, corruption, and poverty, particularly in Least-Reached Peoples and Places (LPPs). This book is a crucial resource for mission workers, senders, and anyone supporting the spiritual, emotional, and practical needs of mission personnel. Its blend of inspiration and pragmatism, combined with both global and local perspectives, makes it a foundational tool for staying the course amidst the demanding and shifting landscape of mission to all peoples.

This book provides a comprehensive human rights analysis of key areas of law affecting older persons, including legal capacity; elder abuse; accommodation and aged care; healthcare; employment; financial security, retirement, and estate planning; and social and cultural participation. The research identifies individual autonomy and participation in decision-making as fundamental to a human rights-based approach to elder law. The book argues that a paradigm shift must occur away from traditional medical and charity-based understandings of ‘old age’ to instead acknowledge older persons as active holders of enforceable rights. The book argues that a Convention on the Rights of Older Persons is an essential tool in achieving this, but that even without a dedicated treaty there is much to be gained from a human rights-based approach. Significantly, because the issues arising in ‘old age’ are often the culmination of experiences occurring throughout the life course, a human rights-based approach to elder law must begin with a commitment to human rights for people of all ages.

Fifty-two readings on living in intentional Christian community to spark group discussion.Gold Medal Winner, 2017 Illumination Book Awards, Christian LivingSilver Medal Winner, 2017 Benjamin Franklin Award in Religion, Independent Book Publishers AssociationWhy, in an age of connectivity, are our lives more isolated and fragmented than ever? And what can be done about it? The answer lies in the hands of God’s people. Increasingly, today’s Christians want to be the church, to follow Christ together in daily life. From every corner of society, they are daring to step away from the status quo and respond to Christ’s call to share their lives more fully with one another and with others. As they take the plunge, they are discovering the rich, meaningful life that Jesus has in mind for all people, and pointing the church back to its original calling: to be a gathered, united community that demonstrates the transforming love of God.Of course, such a life together with others isn’t easy. The selections in this volume are, by and large, written by practitioners—people who have pioneered life in intentional community and have discovered in the nitty-gritty of daily life what it takes to establish, nurture, and sustain a Christian community over the long haul.Whether you have just begun thinking about communal living, are already embarking on sharing life with others, or have been part of a community for many years, the pieces in this collection will encourage, challenge, and strengthen you. The book’s fifty-two chapters can be read one a week to ignite meaningful group discussion.Contributors include: John F. Alexander, Eberhard Arnold, J.
