A Systematic Guide to Collaboration and Competition within organizations: How understanding the Interplay of Collaboration and Competition maximises B
We expect our organizational leaders and managers to be competent in collaboration and competition. However, truly exceptional leaders are masters of collaboration and competition at the same time, within the same projects and even within the same teams. These Interplay Leaders understand the subtle yet continuous interplay of collaboration and competition necessary for a project's success. The central argument of this book is that the current unspoken assumption in organizational leadership and management that all projects are either collaborative or competitive but never both is fatally flawed and produces, at best, sub-optimal results and at worst total failures. I discuss why I believe this 'single dynamic' mindset has gripped organizations by first reviewing the literature and then examining the etymology of the words "collaborate" and "compete." I then look to biology, war, politics and sport to show that this division between collaboration and competition is artificial and not a natural state of affairs. I propose a new understanding of how these two activities, collaboration and competition, fundamentally interplay and suggest two new hybrid dynamics "Edgy Collaboration" and "Eco Competition" which organizational teams can recognise and employ. I also identify and describe 9 practical disciplines/skills for mastering the Collaborate/Compete "Interplay":1.Qualification2.Teaming3.Game Mapping4.Scorecards5.Reputation6.Alliancing7.Principled Negotiating8.Decision-Making9.Course CorrectionsI conclude by discussing how learning/simulation games can assist in building the skills needed to succeed in Interplay and describe 3 real on-line team game examples which explore the new interplay dynamics experientially and socially
El Puente, A New Bridge to the Spanish Language: A Complete Guide and Exercise Manual for the English Speaker (B & W)
Would you like to speak and understand verbal and written Spanish? This new complete guide and exercise manual offers an easy and natural approach to learning Spanish. You will find out that this book will be your best friend in the journey to achieve your goal.Learning a language can be frustrating. I learned English as an adult and the methodology that helped me to cross the bridge from Spanish to English constitutes the structure of this book. I tell you It can be done This language guide is a consolidation of my own experience and a proof that it works. I am taking you, by the hand, back through the "language bridge" I traveled a few years ago. On page 26, there is a discussion of the time it takes and how you can monitor your progress. The student of a foreign language should be exposed to "verbal language", to the "written language", and to brief descriptions of the grammatical differences. Learning a secondary language is not a mechanical substitution of words for words. You will learn Spanish with the Joneses "and their friends." You will encounter dialogs where they discuss their daily life and concerns. Follow them through the book and discover how their lives evolve and how they achieve or do not achieve their goals. Will Cora stop nagging her husband? Will Amy be accepted into college? Did the Smiths enjoy their cruise in the Caribbean? Will Amy tell her Facebook friends? Each of the 50 Spanish text samples has associate tables of glossary to reduce the need for a bilingual dictionary. The themes are simple and entertaining: a trip to the Iguassu falls, a hot air balloon ride in Spain, sheep ranches, polo facts, the origin of the commercial apple, and so on.The student should familiarize himself / herself with the sample sentences and study the comparative grammar only to understand the differences. For example, you might already know that the verb "To be" has two forms in Spanish to indicate when something is permanent and when something is temporary.Unit 11 will introduce you to a peculiar form of the past tense in Spanish that indicates when something was done "often or continuously" in the past, instead of only "once". It takes a while to master the concept.Unit 16 discusses the Spanish Subjunctive mood. The Subjunctive is a form of the verb used by the Spanish speaker to express the "intention to influence" what another person does. Because there is no correlation in English, to master this form of the verb requires additional Units 17, 18 and 19. I include many examples, explanations, and exercises to aid in the effort. You will find 200 additional seed-words illustrated in full color and presented, each one, by a different elf. These illustrations appear at random to break the monotony of the text and to provide an additional stimulation to the cognitive part of your brain.
RX for Health Care Reform

RX for Health Care Reform

In this readable and well-researched book, Ken Terry analyzes the current state of health care reform and finds it wanting. Instead of tackling the core problems in our failing system, he argues, politicians, insurance executives, and health care leaders have embraced ideologically driven initiatives that pursue impractical objectives or will take too long to bear fruit. Among these are such widely hailed trends as disease management, pay for performance, cost and price ""transparency,"" consumer-directed care, and health information technology, none of which will reverse the rising tide of health spending. What is creating this nightmare scenario, according to Terry, is the sheer profitability of the health care industry. Insurers, physicians, hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, and device manufacturers are all striving to maximize their profits, and there is no effective competition or regulation to restrain them. Only a complete overhaul of our system for financing and delivering health care can get us out of this mess, the author maintains. In the second half of his book, he presents a bold vision of how to do this: first, he says, all primary care physicians should join group practices that are large enough to take financial responsibility for professional services. And second, competition among those physician groups, based on cost and quality, should replace competition among health plans. There should be only one government-regulated insurer per region, he says, and it should have no role in managing care. The book is introduced by Paul B. Ginsburg, President of the Center for Studying Health System Change.

We Codependent Men, We Mute Coyotes. Help for men living with addicted people Preface This book was written for a man who is living with an addicted person who still considers addiction a problem that he can solve on his own. If you are such a man, whether you have admitted it consciously or not, you see some loved-one's behavior as a problem that you may somehow solve. This misconception is not only perpetuating your loved one's disease, it is destroying you as well. If you can read this book and learn about how addiction to a substance affects family members, then you have chance for recovery. Your loved one's addiction is not a problem you can solve. It is a fact, and you cannot solve a fact. You can only ask for help. As you will discover here, it is available from many sources. What we are saying is that you are absolutely powerless over someone else's addiction. You may be a CEO, a minister, a physician, an attorney, a policeman, a psychiatrist, or the president. You are still powerless. Until you admit this fact first to God, to yourself, and to another human being, then you are cannot solve this, and you may be part of the problem Let us give an example. If you have planned a picnic and it has started raining, that is a fact. You cannot solve this fact. Your only choice is to decide how you are going to react to this fact. Once you understand that addiction is a fact, acceptance can follow. As you will read in our stories about how we tried to survive while living with addicted people, finally coming to that acceptance can be a horribly long and arduous process. May our book make your recovery process begin sooner

This masterful social and environmental history raises questions about how decisions being made about the natural world today will shape the cities of tomorrow. In 1865, John Smoke braved the ice on Burlington Bay to go spearfishing. Soon after, he was arrested by a fishery inspector and then convicted by a magistrate who chastised him for thinking that he was at liberty to do as he pleased "with Her Majesty's property."With this story, Nancy Bouchier and Ken Cruikshank launch their history of the relationship between the people of Hamilton, Ontario, and Hamilton Harbour (aka Burlington Bay). From the time of European settlement through to the city's rise as an industrial power, townsfolk struggled with nature, and with one another, to champion their particular vision of "the bay" as a place to live, work, and play. As Smoke discovered, the outcomes of those struggles reflected the changing nature of power in an industrial city. From efforts to conserve the fishery in the 1860s to current attempts to revitalize a seriously polluted harbour, each generation has tried to create what it believed would be a livable and prosperous city.
