Idolatry and Its Enemies

The ecclesiastical investigations into Indian religious error--the Extirpation of idolatry--that occurred in the seventeenth-and eighteenth-century Archdiocese of Lima come to life here as the most revealing sources on colonial Andean religion and culture. Focusing on a largely neglected period, 1640 to 1750, and moving beyond portrayals that often view the relationships between indigenous peoples and Europeans solely in terms of repression, opposition, or accommodation, Kenneth Mills provides a wealth of new material and interpretation for understanding native Andeans and Spanish Christians as participants in a common, if not harmonious, history. By examining colonial interaction and "religion as lived," he introduces memorable native Andean and Spanish actors and finds vivid points of entry into the complex realities of parish life in the mid-colonial Andes. Mills describes fitful, sometimes unintentional, and often ambiguous kinds of religious change among Andeans. He shows that many of the Quechua speakers whose testimonies form the bulk of the archival evidence were simultaneously active Catholic parishioners and adherents to a complex of transforming Andean religious structures. Mills also explores the notions of reformation and correction that fueled the extirpating process in the central Andes, as elsewhere. Moreover, he demonstrates wide differences of opinion among Spanish churchmen as to the best manner to proceed against the suspect religiosity of baptized Andeans--many of whom considered themselves Christians. In so doing, he connects this religious history to experiences in other regions of colonial Spanish America and to wider relations between Christian and non-Christian peoples.

Colonial Spanish America is a book of readings about people—people from different worlds who came together to form a society by chance and by design in the years after 1492. The book is meant to enrich, not repeat, the work of existing texts on this period, and its focus on people makes it stand out from other books that have concentrated on the political and economic aspects of the culture. This text provides a detailed look at the cultural development of colonial Latin America using readings, documents, historical analysis, and visual materials, including photographs, drawings, and paintings. The book makes interesting and exciting use of the illustrations and documents, which show social changes, puzzling developments, and the experience of living in the colonial society. Religion and society are the integral themes of Colonial Spanish America. Religion becomes the nexus for much of what has been treated as political, social, economic, and cultural history during this period. Society is just as inclusive, allowing the reader to meet a variety of individuals-not faceless social groups. While some familiar faces and voices are included-namely those of Spanish conquerors, chroniclers, and missionaries-other, less familiar points of view complement and complicate the better-known narratives of this history. In treating Iberia and America, before as well as after their meeting, apparent contradictions emerge as opportunities for understanding; different perspectives become prompts for wider discussion. Other themes include exploration; military and spiritual conquest; and the formation, consolidation, reform, and collapse of colonial institutions of government and the Church, and the accompanying changes in the economy and labor. Colonial Spanish America: A Documentary History is an excellent tool for Latin American history survey courses.

Historian Kenneth Lyftogt introduces us to the volunteer soldiers of the Pioneer Grays and Cedar Falls Reserves infantry companies and in turn examines Iowa's role in the Civil War. Many of these soldiers served the Union for the duration of the war, from the early fighting in Missouri to Shiloh, Vicksburg, and Sherman's destructive marches through Georgia and the Carolinas. Their letters home are Lyftogt's primary sources, as are editorials and articles published in the ""Cedar Falls Gazette"".

I was only six when I suspected my skin might be the wrong colour...Born female on the wrong side of the tracks, Eve Mills Nash, with the help of co-author Kenneth J. Harvey, tells a hard-hitting tale of a lifelong fascination with men of a darker hue. From early childhood, Nash knew it was "something to do with what was inside the bottles" that encouraged the groping male fingers that casually abused her during her parents' drunken parties. She soon discovered that the wine remnants in the revellers' discarded cups would numb her pain. Nash's fortuneteller grandmother predicted a future of violence for her, starting as a teenager with her marriage to first husband Stan, an Ontario Mohawk. What Nash's grandmother didn't prophesize was the drunken binges and revolving door of unstable partners that traumatized her children, left her suicidal, and convinced her she was a failure as a mother after her eldest daughter became a cocaine addict. Harrowing yet life-affirming, this blistering account of life on the cusp of New Brunswick's Native community sees the Little White Squaw and her children balance precariously between two seemingly irreconcilable cultures and colours.
Policy-Making and Planning in the Health Sector

Policy-Making and Planning in the Health Sector

Now, as when this book was originally published in 1982, health services have shown themselves only too capable of absorbing a large share of the resources that nations have available for public and private expenditure. Then, as now, as nations are faced with problems of slow or negative economic growth, government resources are increasingly directed towards setting limits on the resources absorbed by the health sector. Looking especially at the UK and USA, the book explores the challenges that countries face in attempting to improve the health and well-being of their communities through conscious planning of health-related activities. It is argued that there is often a huge credibility gap between the rhetoric of comprehensive planning and the reality of health policy-making and planning in many societies. The book identifies feasible approaches that can be made to improve decision-making in the health sector.

This book deals with casting powders and explains how they work and how they are best used to minimise defects in the ninety per cent of world steel production that is continuously cast. It also includes a chapter on mould powders for ingot-casting. The factors affecting various aspects of powder performance are described and different defects, their causes, and means of avoiding them are considered.Providing the first comprehensive coverage of mould powder properties and uses, the text treats theoretical and practical matters and gives direct advice on problem-solving. Drawing on a wealth of scientific and technological research, represented by its extensive references, The Casting Powders Book shows readers how they can design and create mould powders optimised to fulfil the necessary functions of:lubrication of steel shells and reduction of shell–mould friction;absorption of inclusions floating up from the steel;chemical insulation of steel from carbon-rich mould powder; andprotection of the steel meniscus from oxidation and thermal insulation to prevent surface-freezing.Thermophysical properties and heat-transfer processes are also given detailed attention and case studies illustrate the methods and materials described. The Casting Powders Book is designed to be a periodic reference that can be dipped into as the need arises. Readers from different backgrounds are well-served by the depth and variety of content:engineers trouble-shooting a continuous-casting process interested in how mould fluxes can minimise defects and process problems and how their performance is in turn affected by casting parameters;academic scientists interested in the theoretical aspects and properties of mould fluxes and slag films;engineers working with ingot-casting processes;and many others will find this book an invaluable resource.

Radiology professor Ken Miles takes a detailed look at what happens inside the brains and bodies of churchgoers when they are worshiping. Rather than concluding that the words and actions performed during a church service are tricks which help to transmit false beliefs, he found that his appreciation of Christian worship was increased, and his faith strengthened. Using scientific principles, Ken refutes the notion that science is incompatible with faith and undermines common criticisms of religious belief. He builds a case for worship by drawing on the methods of evidence-based medicine to argue that experiences of God are worthy of inclusion in serious theorizing. A woman with a fever and a doctor with a blocked stethoscope are just two of the real and imaginary medical scenarios used to explain key concepts. Worship narratives, actions, and environment are shown to be fundamental to the way God is experienced and to the changes in behavior these encounters produce. Rather than being historical quirks, patterns of worship have developed over the centuries through trial and error with successful elements preserved. Science can now show why they are effective. Regardless of belief or background, readers will see Christian worship in a new light.

Tom, the eldest son, returns from the war in the Pacific to Whittier, a small Southern mill town. Disillusioned and cynical from his war experiences, he wonders aimlessly around the town where nothing ever seems to change. When his younger brother is mysteriously killed in New Orleans, Tom travels there to bring the body home only to encounter a trouble he did not anticipate, but could not avoid. With a terrible dark secret which he thinks is behind him, he quickly returns to Whittier and takes parttime work performing errands for the town's prominent lawyer, Theo Hatcher who becomes a mentor and a friend. The Pruitt family is then virtually destroyed when the mill is sold to a faceless Northern corporation. In a fleeting happiness, Tom finally finds solace in the love of a local girl, Maggie, who has struggles and dreams of her own. Seemingly close to coming to grips with his past demons, Tom is caught up in a horrific incident when a local black man is falsely accused of murdering a white taxi drive and is subsequently arrested, sealing Tom's fate. Mill Town is ostensibly the story of the Pruitt family, but more poignantly, it is a story of a changing South and its ramifications for the people who experience the inexorable passing of a way of life. It is, in the end, a story of hope. Hope set against the backdrop of disillusionment, hatred, violence, and, alas, love.
