As if running an art museum wasn't enough, Dr. Dulcinea Chambers now finds herself in battle with the new board of directors chair, Vanessa Rich, who is on a ruthless quest to trim the budget in any way she can. Her cost-cutting measures will begin with selling off Dulcie's antique office furniture, much to Dulcie's bewilderment. Detective Nicholas Black is no less perplexed when falconry expert Esmerelda Graves barges into the police station insisting that one of her prized birds has been murdered. Ulterior motives are certainly at play as Dulcie finds that Vanessa stands to profit from the sales, while Nick learns that Esmerelda's raptors are carrying tiny video cameras. When the seemingly disconnected worlds of these two shady women begin to intertwine, and a most certainly murdered person turns up where the dead bird was found, Dulcie and Nick need hawk-like precision to determine why... before someone else falls prey.

The Costumes of Covent Garden, a new traveling exhibit of costumes worn by the British Royal Opera, is making its debut at the Maine Museum of Art, and director Dulcie Chambers couldn't be more thrilled, especially since the woman in charge of the elaborate display is Dulcie's former professor from Oxford and now good friend Francine Belmont. Along with numerous trunks filled with dazzling clothes, Francine brings with her a small sewing and design staff that includes American Bella Washington, a young and talented New York design school graduate who has quickly become Francine's primary assistant. Opera is never a straightforward affair, however. Dulcie's brother, owner of a successful yacht touring company and a confirmed bachelor, has fallen hard for Bella. He finds himself in competition with the exhibit's opening gala singer Antonio who can bring down the house with his arias. Bella has her own plot twist though, as she has no interest in either of them. She is too busy with the bolts of lavish fabrics and intricate stitchwork required in her work. Comedy turns to tragedy with a sudden death in the museum basement. Was it simply a terrible accident, or have the darker forces been at play? Detective Nicholas Black enters the stage to investigate, but in scene after scene he is unable to move that plot forward. Yet, while the chorus is silent for Nick on the questionable death, they've clearly begun singing on the matter of love. He and Dulcie are most definitely beginning Act II of their budding romance. While opera conjures exciting thoughts of theatrics and song, both Dulcie and Nick are painfully aware that the literal translation of the Italian word "opera" in English is "work". Sorting through the increasingly nefarious clues, they come to realize that in life, as in opera, a dramatic accident is almost never accidental.

Intrusion detection is not for the faint at heart. But, if you are a network administrator chances are you're under increasing pressure to ensure that mission-critical systems are safe--in fact impenetrable--from malicious code, buffer overflows, stealth port scans, SMB probes, OS fingerprinting attempts, CGI attacks, and other network intruders. Designing a reliable way to detect intruders before they get in is a vital but daunting challenge. Because of this, a plethora of complex, sophisticated, and pricy software solutions are now available. In terms of raw power and features, SNORT, the most commonly used Open Source Intrusion Detection System, (IDS) has begun to eclipse many expensive proprietary IDSes. In terms of documentation or ease of use, however, SNORT can seem overwhelming. Which output plugin to use? How do you to email alerts to yourself? Most importantly, how do you sort through the immense amount of information Snort makes available to you? Many intrusion detection books are long on theory but short on specifics and practical examples. Not Managing Security with Snort and IDS Tools. This new book is a thorough, exceptionally practical guide to managing network security using Snort 2.1 (the latest release) and dozens of other high-quality open source other open source intrusion detection programs. Managing Security with Snort and IDS Tools covers reliable methods for detecting network intruders, from using simple packet sniffers to more sophisticated IDS (Intrusion Detection Systems) applications and the GUI interfaces for managing them. A comprehensive but concise guide for monitoring illegal entry attempts, this invaluable new book explains how to shut down and secure workstations, servers, firewalls, routers, sensors and other network devices. Step-by-step instructions are provided to quickly get up and running with Snort. Each chapter includes links for the programs discussed, and additional links at the end of the book give administrators access to numerous web sites for additional information and instructional material that will satisfy even the most serious security enthusiasts. Managing Security with Snort and IDS Tools maps out a proactive--and effective--approach to keeping your systems safe from attack.

"Community-Based Research and Higher Education is an exceptional book that represents a major contribution to the growing community-engagement movement in universities worldwide. This is an action handbook for faculty, university administrators, students, and community leaders. The book provides a blueprint for life after service-learning; it is a guide to building the capacity of community-based organizations to bring about lasting social change in our communities." — Phil Nyden, professor of sociology and director, Center for Urban Research and Learning, Loyola University, Chicago "Everyone in higher education interested in promoting its civic mission will gain from this seminal exploration of community-based research. The book not only illuminates best practice, it addresses the larger questions of why and how to transform higher education." — Elizabeth L. Hollander, executive director, Campus Compact "This groundbreaking book clarifies the conceptualization and nuances, rewards and challenges, of community-based research. Exhaustive examples, drawn from the authors' work with many multicultural communities, and compelling justifications will appeal to novices and veterans, practitioners and theorists. This is the book on community-based research, and an excellent text for courses involving students in research with communities." — Jeffrey Howard, assistant director, Academic Service-Learning, and editor, Michigan Journal of Community Service Learning, University of Michigan "In a knowledge-based society attention must be paid to social justice. The concerned faculty writing this book do just that and demonstrate how. The resurgence of community-based research championed here could be the beginning of a major epistemological shift in the way we think about and organize the interaction between academic knowledge and community life scholarship of engagement at its best." — R. Eugene Rice, senior scholar, American Association for Higher Education "I have waited for this book to fill the gap on my community methodology shelf, but it won't be there very long as I will use it with my students, and share it with my colleagues who are developing community-based research in their service-learning classes." — Dwight E. Giles, Jr., professor of higher education administration, University of Massachusetts, Boston
Families & Time

Families & Time

Kerry J. Daly

What is family time and what value do we place on it? How many families today have time to be families? How do families view, use, and seek to control time, and how successful are they at it? Caught between a public world speeding along on information superhighways and their own private desire to preserve the family as a rest stop, family members look for new and efficient ways to protect, control, and manage their time. The concept of time is central to the study of families and is used in several different ways: families have changed through history, families experience the passage of time as they age over the life course, and families negotiate time for being together. Families & Time is the first to synthesize these differing concepts of time into a broad theory of how families understand time. In this important volume, Kerry J. Daly examines time as a pervasive influence in the changing experimental world of families. The book opens with a discussion of the various ways time can be conceptualized, in general, followed by an examination of how families have experienced time throughout history. Subsequent chapters examine the social construction of time in families; as well as such specific topics as time and technology in the home; controlling time; and the societal, gender, and intergenerational politics of family time. Though at its heart a theoretical book, Families & Time consciously focuses on the practical aspects of this theory in understanding the power in the family, the family life cycle, and work/family conflicts. Scholars interested in the development of theory of the family, examining gender and work issues, and exploring various perspectives on time will find this book indispensable. "In this compelling portrayal of the patterns and politics of family time, author Kerry J. Daly has produced a masterpiece. Destined to become a classic, Families & Time will alert scholars across disciplines to the breadth and depth of interdisciplinary family studies. Accessible to everyone, Families & Time can be read for knowledge and pleasure, as a new contribution to family theory construction, a mediation on the pervasiveness and value of time in family experience, and a wellspring of creative ideas for families who want to gain control over their perceived loss of time in an accelerated society. Scrupulously documented in a writing style that combines metaphor, narrative, and empirical findings, Daly succeeds in offering a new consciousness and theory of family time. I will read and recommend this book to others over and over again." --Katherine R. Allen, Ph.D., Family and Child Development, Virginia Tech
