Political science is an intensely quantitative discipline, and models are central. Political scientists use models--formal and informal, statistical and qualitative--to investigate and illuminate causal mechanisms, generate comparative data, and understand the conditions under which certain outcomes are expected to occur. But even though the use of models has grown dramatically in the discipline, there is very little understanding among political scientists of the role or function that models play in the scientific enterprise more generally. Moreover, theoretical models and empirical models have traditionally been treated as separate (hence the division between theorists and empiricists). Today, however, the emphasis is on using models to generate testable predictions that serve as hypotheses for subsequent data analysis. But how do we justify and rationalize the method? Why test predictions from a deductive, and thus truth-preserving, system? David Primo and Kevin Clarke tackle these central questions in this novel work of methodology. They argue that the lack of a suitable justification for model testing is not the only reason to revisit the role of models in political science. Most importantly, they contend that models should be seen as 'objects' and thus neither true nor false. Rather, they should be evaluated in the same fashion as models are evaluated in the physical sciences--good models are useful for particular purposes. Nothing more, nothing less. Divided into two parts, the book first establishes that no social scientific endeavor is philosophy-free. The second part focuses on different types of models, and closes with a framework for integrating theoretical and statistical models.

The Death of a Good Dream: A Story of God's Jealous Pursuit of a Man and His Crisis of Faith
Kevin A. Thompson
Mountain Pass

How can a good God allow me to suffer? Does the evidence of a broken world necessitate an absent or preoccupied God? Does God even see my pain? Why does he deny me? Through this work, Kevin Thompson details his walk of faith struggling with these questions. As a child, he formed a mistrust of the world leading to a contradictory life of faith filled with self-reliance. In spite of his God given talents and his plans for his own future, God allowed suffering to enter and refine his character and deepen his faith. For over 10 years he and his wife struggled against infertility, each other, and God--ultimately leading Kevin to a crucible of choice during his dark night of the soul. Would he walk away from life? From God? Beyond providing honest reflections of the heartache of a childless man, this work also details the struggle to come to grips with a God who allows suffering--even unanswered prayers for what may be considered good dreams. A thoughtful and biblically based process is provided addressing a resolution of God's character in the face of pain. Any who have faced a deep disappointment, suffering, or even the death of a good dream, is invited on a journey to better grasp the depth and breadth of a God who jealously loves and pursues us at any cost.

A Dirty Little Secret is memoir about the life of Kevin Porreco. Readers will follow his dysfunctional upbringing, his search and discovery of his biological parents, as well as being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, and how he lives and thrives every day with the disease. The story starts out at Kevin's earliest of memories he had after being given up by his single mother, and adopted into a dysfunctional home as an infant. As he tries to deal with his unbalanced adoptive mother "Helen", He receives no help from an adoptive father that loves him, but does not have a semblance of common sense when it comes to parenting. The house is bathed in violence and chaos, two things that will alter his life forever. In 1997, while living in San Francisco, he is diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. He then takes the reader on his journey of living daily with this disease, and the roller coaster of emotions that come along with it. He will take you into his doctor appointments, where decisions are made that affect his everyday life and even his mortality. Kevin also covers the various therapies he has used over the years, while moving around the country and being the patient of some of the most well-known doctors in the field of multiple sclerosis. Having always known that he was adopted, and given the unstable upbringing in his life, Kevin takes you along as he embarks on a journey of finding his biological parents. You'll be taken into the depths of database searches and dead ends. He then shares with the reader how he achieved inner peace, with the help of a Catholic priest in Los Angeles. Now in 2013, he has started to devote his life to helping the disadvantaged and homeless, through his work with the Salvation Army.
Before Cancer: A Manual For Healthy Living Based On Science
Kevin A. Figueiredo
Fth Publishing
2016
nidottu
The fundamentals of health science from a scientist's perspective. Health science and a better understanding of the science of health can help all of us minimize our risks of getting diseases such as cancer. Health science begins with genetics and environmental factors, and it may continue with the mind-body connection. A new field of epigenetics is described as a responsive interface that directly connects what we eat to what our bodies eventually become. Nutrition and exercise recommendations are provided for promoting healthy living and well-being. In addition, guidelines of health science are outlined which can assist the reader in achieving optimal health throughout life. Before Cancer offers useful suggestions on how to live a healthy lifestyle as it explores many choices that we each make in our daily lives which ultimately determine the fate of our individual cells. Healthy living begins with understanding how to eat healthy and consistently making the healthy choice in all that we do from nutrition to exercise to positive thinking. This book contains valuable healthy living tips, as it offers suggestions on nutrition for cancer prevention which relates back to the importance of healthy living. A nutritious diet is a cancer prevention diet, and a vice versa. A reader that may be interested in pursuing a healthy lifestyle will obtain similar benefits from this book as a reader who is interested in cancer prevention, although each may find greatest values in different chapters of this book. The reason for this is because health and cancer are not just separate events, they are actually opposites. Health promotion and cancer prevention ultimately become intertwined synonyms. This is best explained in the health/cancer equilibriums which are detailed throughout the book. Of course, cancer prevention is not the only benefit of health promotion. The latter also assists with prevention of multiple diseases including diabetes, alzheimer's and heart disease. The book outlines how there really is no substitution for health, fitness and dieting, and it will also be of interest to people interested in diets and weight loss. Ironically, following a cancer prevention diet and exercise routine may be one best way to lose weight. Health is a crucial component of life for everyone, and Before Cancer offers options for all - healthy or ill, fit or unfit, young or elderly. Health in a way is synonymous with life, so it only makes sense that Before Cancer will be useful for all who prefer health instead of disease. The health science guidelines in this book will outline step by step how to be healthy and how to live a healthy lifestyle. Before Cancer is a comprehensive guide on health based on science that describes the human machine as a self-repairing system with vast intrinsic capabilities.

A FOX FAMILY HISTORY: Family History and Genealogy for the Descendants of Archer and Mabel Fox of Wilton, New Hampshire Although the principal audience of the book will be the descendants of Archer and Mabel Fox, it should be of interest to all Foxes descended from Thomas Foxe of Concord and other early New England Foxe immigrants. The book provides an accurate history of the Fox family, from Thomas's birth in London in 1619 to the present. In addition to the well-documented Fox lineage, the book recounts all we know about the author's maternal forbears of both Swiss (Weibel /Steinman) and Irish (Reardon/Higgins/Murphy) ancestry. The first 300 years' history of this Fox family in America is assimilated from various sources. Questions regarding Thomas Foxe's English roots, his first wife Rebecca's real surname (not "Wheat"), his possible kinship to Thomas Foxe of Cambridge and Richard Foxe of Glastonbury, and our alleged descent from the martyrologist John Foxe, are discussed.
