Astrology is how human beings have always answered the ultimate questions. Since the dawn of civilization, humans have looked to the night sky and told stories about the movements of the planets to answer questions about Life, the Universe, and Everything. This is the origin of astrology. In the beginning, there was astrology. But before there was astrology, there was story. Astrology evolved from stories, and we use astrology to tell stories. So, the way to get better answers from astrology is to tell better astrology stories. To tell better astrology stories, first you have to understand how stories work and what makes a better story. That's where the Human Game(TM) comes in. The Human Game is a philosophy based on the idea that the Universe is made up of stories. If everything is story, when you understand how stories work you can understand anything-including astrology. To demonstrate how astrology stories work, we'll work with the natal chart and the most basic components of the language of astrology. We'll take a journalistic approach to astrology stories and explore how different components of the language of astrology-the planet, modality, element, and house-answer specific questions, including What, What Else, How, Which, and Where. If you're already familiar with the language of astrology, you will discover new ways to work with the simplest components. And if you're new to astrology this program will include everything you need to tell astrology stories. Along the way, you'll experience a new, dynamic approach to natal astrology. You'll learn how to build a foundation of happiness and experience your Happily Ever After. And you'll use astrology stories to assemble a Happiness GPS that gives you turn-by-turn directions to the best possible outcome in any situation.
Public Administration: Power and Politics in the Fourth Branch of Government

Public Administration: Power and Politics in the Fourth Branch of Government presents public administration through the lens of politics and the policy-making power of the bureaucracy. By showing how the bureaucracy influences daily life, Smith and Licari bring the field of public administration alive for students. This text dispels the myth that the study of public administration is boring or irrelevant to students' lives by demonstrating just how deeply it pervades our lives. The authors focus on the bureaucracy--"the fourth branch of government"--as a key ingredient in politics and policy-making. This approach is novel, but it accurately reflects the true nature of public administration in America. This book examines our bureaucracy's considerable political power, where it comes from, how it is used, and how it can be controlled. Major Features: * Unique focus on political and policy-making power. This is the first public administration textbook to focus on the political and policy-making power of the bureaucracy. Without abandoning coverage of more traditional topics, this approach is more compelling to students because it demonstrates just how much influence the bureaucracy wields in our daily lives. * Highlights the tension between democracy and bureaucracy. A central paradox at the heart of the political system is democracy's reliance on the very undemocratic bureaucratic institutions that characterize the administrative branch of government. This text seeks to explain why and lay out the implications of that dependency. * Details the role and legitimacy of public administration in a democracy. There is an uneasy and fascinating relationship between the democratically elected leadership in government and the bureaucracies needed to carry out their decisions. This tension forms a running theme throughout the book. * Solid multidisciplinary foundation. This book draws on literature by the most important academics in the fields of both public administration and political science. * Readability. Smith and Licari write in an engaging, informal style that is rich in lively examples and free of academic jargon. Key terms are included in a glossary.
In Marx at the Margins, Kevin Anderson uncovers a variety of extensive but neglected texts by Marx that cast what we thought we knew about his work in a startlingly different light. Analyzing a variety of Marx’s writings, including journalistic work written for the New York Tribune, Anderson presents us with a Marx quite at odds with conventional interpretations. Rather than providing us with an account of Marx as an exclusively class-based thinker, Anderson here offers a portrait of Marx for the twenty-first century: a global theorist whose social critique was sensitive to the varieties of human social and historical development, including not just class, but nationalism, race, and ethnicity, as well. Through highly informed readings of work ranging from Marx’s unpublished 1879–82 notebooks to his passionate writings about the antislavery cause in the United States, this volume delivers a groundbreaking and canon-changing vision of Karl Marx that is sure to provoke lively debate in Marxist scholarship and beyond. For this expanded edition, Anderson has written a new preface that discusses the additional 1879–82 notebook material, as well as the influence of the Russian-American philosopher Raya Dunayevskaya on his thinking.
Technological advances in hardware and software provide powerful tools with the potential to design interfaces that are powerful and easy to use. Yet, the frustrations and convoluted "work-arounds" often encountered make it clear that there is substantial room for improvement. Drawn from more than 60 years of combined experience studying, implementing, and teaching about performance in human-technology systems, Display and Interface Design: Subtle Science, Exact Art provides a theoretically-based yet practical guide for ecological display and interface design.Written from the perspective of cognitive systems engineering and ecological interface design, the book delineates how to design interfaces tailored to specific work demands, leverage the powerful perception-action skills of the human, and use powerful interface technologies wisely. This triadic approach (domain, human, interface) to display and interface design stands in sharp contrast to traditional dyadic (human, interface) approaches. The authors describe general principles and specific strategies at length and include concrete examples and extensive design tutorials that illustrate quite clearly how these principles and strategies can be applied. The coverage spans the entire continuum of interfaces that might need to be developed in today's work places. The reason that good interfaces are few and far between is really quite simple: they are extremely difficult to design and build properly. While there are many books available that address display design, most of them focus on aesthetic principles but lack scientific rigor, or are descriptive but not prescriptive. Whether you are exploring the principles of interface design or designing and implementing interfaces, this book elucidates an overarching framework for design that can be applied to the broad spectrum of existing domains.

The concept of profiting from trading volatility is not new, but is known to only a few players in the derivatives industry. Buying and Selling Volatility is the first book to explain this trading strategy in detail without using complex mathematics. Offering a new approach to the subject of options, seen purely from a volatility viewpoint, the author uses illustrations to clearly explain the connection between volatility and options. He explains how investors can profit from the volatility, or lack of volatility, of an option price regardless of whether the market rises or falls. Useful to both novice investors and professional traders, Buying and Selling Volatility also supplies the reader with a risk management software system that is comparable to those used commercially.

The Writing Template Book is a practical how-to guide for academic writers. Because good writers automatically develop their own internal writing templates that impose clarity and structure on their material, this text provides template examples to help less experienced writers produce the reliable, replicable syntax that is essential to good writing. TheWriting Template Book provides numerous examples and practice exercises on writing summaries, thesis sentences, introductions, conclusions, and the bodies of typical essays and papers. Templates are an effective tool for improving performance on standardized tests like the TOEFL® and the SAT®. Writing templates can enhance students’ scores on standardized tests by providing them with a structure that conforms to grading criteria. Students who are able to apply even a portion of the template to their essays will perform at a higher level than if they had not used templates.
Taking Sides, Second Edition, encourages students to form opinions and exchange ideas on important issues to prepare them for participation in academic settings. The text contains an introductory exercise and six units—philosophy (distributive justice), law, ethics, psychology, business negotiation, and linguistics. Within these sections, students are given practice in how to state opinions, compromise, build consensus, speak persuasively, understand group dynamics, write business memos, make presentations, engage in debate, and negotiate. The second edition of Taking Sides includes changes to the order of the units (from the first edition) to improve usability of material (based on student feedback). New to this edition is material aimed at helping students prepare for the independent and integrated speaking tasks of the TOEFL® iBT. Whether students are preparing for the iBT or not, these activities improve students’ extemporaneous speaking skills and develop true fluency.
Panther Gorge captures the adventure of one of the most remote, enigmatic regions of the Adirondack High Peaks. Two thousand feet deep and lined with sheer cliffs, the rugged chasm sits between Mts. Marcy and Haystack, New York's first and third highest mountains. In between the jaws of the peaks sits an intriguing set of natural curiosities: spires, talus mazes, glacial erratics, ponds, rills, and forest. Panther Gorge begins with a detailed description of the area's topography followed by a rich history.Step back into the 1800's and walk in the footsteps of author Alfred B. Street, surveyor Verplanck Colvin, and guides Orson "Old Mountain" Phelps and Jim Goodwin. Jump forward a century and read about the modern day pioneers of rock and ice climbing. Part two of Panther Gorge chronicles the author's decade-long journey with other local mountaineers to develop new rock climbing and ice climbing routes . Vicariously experience a blustery winter ascent up blue ice or enjoy the serenity of exploring on a temperate summer morning. If you are a hiker, climber, adventurer, or someone who appreciates the beauty of nature, Panther Gorge is a key addition for your collection and the only book dedicated to the subject.Other content: - Complete history of first ascents from 1965-2019. - 37 firsthand accounts from 2009 through the winter of 2018. - Foreword by Don Mellor, climber and author. - Illustrations by Nolan Huther. - Over 170 color photographs, maps, and route plates. What others are saying: Panther Gorge is one of our great unexplored frontiers, shrouded by myth and impenetrable krummholz. Kevin has done an outstanding job chronicling this remote wilderness, not only with exhaustive research, but with extensive, first-hand accounts and photography. The sheer number of climbing successes revealed in these pages leaves one slack-jawed. Panther Gorge is a culmination of Kevin's climbing skill and tireless thirst for discovery. Jim Lawyer, Guidebook Author and ClimberA great contribution from one of our finest local mountaineers. Kevin's work has been useful to me on multiple levels. I have thoroughly enjoyed following his expeditions both on foot and paper. As a search and rescue professional, I've relied on his skills and knowledge several times during crucial situations. As an outdoor adventurist, he has taken exploration to new heights in an old landscape. Scott van Laer, Forest Ranger (PBA of NYS)
Marx's approach to analyzing society and especially his critique of capitalist society, continues to influence the work of a large number of scholars world-wide. Unfortunately, there are relatively few clear accounts of what this approach is and how to put it to use. And, despite the many attempts to use Marx's method to study a variety of subjects, there are relatively few that can serve as useful models. In the present volume, the internationally renowned Marxist scholar, Bertell Ollman, and the social theorist Kevin B. Anderson, have brought together a sampling of the best writings of the past hundred years that illustrate and critique Marx's method as well as explain what it is and how to put it to work. Anyone wishing to understand better Marx's dialectical method (along, of course, with the theories created with its help), or to revise this method or to criticize it, or to use it in their own work will find this collection invaluable.

Explores the ideological underpinnings of school choice and other market-based education reforms.Advocates of market-based education reforms (including such policies as choice, charters, vouchers, and outright privatization) argue that they represent ready solutions to clearly defined problems. Critics of market models, on the other hand, argue that these reforms misperceive the purposes of public education and threaten its democratic ethos. This book explores both the promises and pitfalls of market forces-their potential to improve the quality of public education and their compatibility with its republican justifications. Smith argues that although market models of education are not without utilitarian merit, their potential to alter the social-democratic purposes of education is seriously underestimated. He supports this claim with a series of sophisticated analyses of the key assumptions underlying these models, and by examining the normative elements of theory and methodology that can-and often do-skew empirical policy analysis toward market preferences. He concludes that market reforms are not just a ready means to effectively address the problems of public schooling but rather represent a clear attempt to ideologically redefine its ends.
In A New and Living Way: Christ in the Letter to the Hebrews, Kevin B. McCruden invites readers into a rich theological and pastoral reflection on one of the most distinctive portrayals of Jesus in the New Testament. With scholarly insight and accessible prose, McCruden explores how the Letter to the Hebrews presents Jesus as the eternal high priest—one who is both exalted in divine glory and deeply in solidarity with human suffering. Drawing on contemporary biblical scholarship and ancient literary context, McCruden illuminates Hebrews' dynamic balance between Christ's divinity and humanity. He shows how the letter's priestly Christology was shaped to encourage a marginalized community struggling to remain faithful, and how its message continues to speak powerfully to the needs of Christian readers today. This volume bridges academic rigor with pastoral sensitivity. It is ideal for students, ministers, and all who seek a deeper understanding of the theological beauty and enduring relevance of Hebrews. "A clear, nontechnical, and eloquent introduction to the Christology of the Epistle to the Hebrews. Because Christology is so prominent in the argument of Hebrews as a whole, McCruden's discussion also functions as an engaging and brief guide to the book overall. He does a masterful job situating key aspects of Hebrews in their ancient context, and his interpretation of the author's Christological ideas is sensitive to the needs and concerns of modern readers." —Eric F. Mason, PhD, author of 'You Are a Priest Forever': Second Temple Jewish Messianism and the Priestly Christology of the Epistle to the Hebrews "Kevin McCruden here offers a brief introduction to important interpretive questions in and surrounding the Epistle to the Hebrews. He particularly attends to the significance of Jesus's humanity and heavenly exaltation for Hebrews' high-priestly Christology. This clearly written and approachable book will prove useful for anyone interested in exploring the distinctive Christological claims of Hebrews." —David M. Moffitt, PhD, University of St Andrews "This book provides an introduction to the Christology of Hebrews that distills recent decades of scholarship on Hebrews that is accessible and engaging. McCruden's path through theological issues is attentive to the complexities of the biblical text yet simple in its explanations. I highly recommend it for those who need an introduction to or an update on the Epistle to the Hebrews." —Madison N. Pierce, PhD, Western Theological Seminary Kevin B. McCruden is professor of religious studies and Flannery Chair in Catholic Theology at Gonzaga University. His research interests span multiple areas of New Testament criticism, especially the epistolary literature of the New Testament, including the Letter to the Hebrews and the Letters of Paul. He is the author and/or coeditor of five books. †
