An examination of escalating conflicts between Blacks and Koreans in American cities, focusing on the Flatbush Boycott of 1990. Claire Jean Kim rejects the idea that Black-Korean conflict constitutes racial scapegoating and argues instead that it is a response to white dominance in society.

Dangerous Crossings offers an interpretation of the impassioned disputes that have arisen in the contemporary United States over the use of animals in the cultural practices of nonwhite peoples. It examines three controversies: the battle over the 'cruelty' of the live animal markets in San Francisco's Chinatown, the uproar over the conviction of NFL superstar Michael Vick on dogfighting charges, and the firestorm over the Makah tribe's decision to resume whaling in the Pacific Northwest after a hiatus of more than seventy years. Claire Jean Kim shows that each dispute demonstrates how race and species operate as conjoined logics, or mutually constitutive taxonomies of power. Analyzing each case as a conflict between single optics (the optic of cruelty and environmental harm vs the optic of racism and cultural imperialism), she argues for a multi-optic approach that takes different forms of domination seriously, and thus encourages an ethics of avowal among different struggles.

Asian Americans in an Anti-Black World

Where do Asian Americans fit into the U.S. racial order? Are they subordinated comparably to Black people or permitted adjacency to whiteness? The racial reckoning prompted by the police murder of George Floyd and the surge in anti-Asian hate during the COVID-19 pandemic raise these questions with new urgency. Asian Americans in an Anti-Black World is a groundbreaking study that will shake up scholarly and popular thinking on these matters. Theoretically innovative and based on rigorous historical research, this provocative book tells us we must consider both anti-Blackness and white supremacy—and the articulation of the two forces—in order to understand U.S. racial dynamics. The construction of Asian Americans as not-white but above all not-Black has determined their positionality for nearly two centuries. How Asian Americans choose to respond to this status will help to define racial politics in the U.S. in the twenty-first century.

The book presents findings and analysis from six years of research on class structure and class identity in Soweto, South Africa’s most populous and politically-important township. This is placed within the context of heightened socio-economic inequalities in nearly all countries around the world. The authors looked at a number of areas. How do Sowetans understand class and how do they locate themselves and each other within the broad divisions of class outline? What are the markers and indicators that influence their perceptions of class and does the terminology of class affect these perceptions through dilution into indigenous languages. Setting out class structure and class identity, with its extremes of unemployment, strike action and ongoing insurrectionary unrest among the urban poor, the book draws on a large, wide-ranging representative survey and extensive qualitative fieldwork. It makes an original contribution to the sociology of class and to the politics of contemporary South Africa.

The majority of the world’s children grow up learning two or more languages. The study of early bilingualism is central to current psycholinguistics, offering insights into issues such as transfer and interference in development. From an applied perspective, it poses a universal challenge to language assessment practices throughout childhood, as typically developing bilingual children usually underperform relative to monolingual norms when assessed in one language only. We measured vocabulary with Communicative Development Inventories for 372 24-month-old toddlers learning British English and one Additional Language out of a diverse set of 13 (Bengali, Cantonese, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Hindi-Urdu, Italian, Mandarin, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish and Welsh). We furthered theoretical understanding of bilingual development by showing, for the first time, that linguistic distance between the child’s two languages predicts vocabulary outcome, with phonological overlap related to expressive vocabulary, and word order typology and morphological complexity related to receptive vocabulary, in the Additional Language. Our study also has crucial clinical implications: we have developed the first bilingual norms for expressive and receptive vocabulary for 24-month-olds learning British English and an Additional Language. These norms were derived from factors identified as uniquely predicting CDI vocabulary measures: the relative amount of English versus the Additional Language in child-directed input and parental overheard speech, and infant gender. The resulting UKBTAT tool was able to accurately predict the English vocabulary of an additional group of 58 bilinguals learning an Additional Language outside our target range. This offers a pragmatic method for the assessment of children in the majority language when no tool exists in the Additional Language. Our findings also suggest that the effect of linguistic distance might extend beyond bilinguals’ acquisition of early vocabulary to encompass broader cognitive processes, and could constitute a key factor in the study of the debated bilingual advantage.

Psychotherapist Beth Linn is trying to stay focused on her work in the town where she grew up. But she's becoming increasingly triangulated between clients in a situation she senses could become deadly and the discovery of long-held secrets about her own past.Kim St. Clair's thrilling debut novel takes us deep into the experiences of being both therapist and client. We enter the uncomfortable spaces of the profession-the isolation of confidentiality and the weight of possessing information that cannot be shared. We witness the vulnerability of being a client and how difficult it can be to trust a therapist. Ultimately, this gifted author allows us to see how beautiful-and terrifying-it is to expose our pain to a professional we hope possesses the skills and compassion to realize what we need. Once drawn into this skillfully interwoven story, we can't help but emerge ready to listen to the tiny voices inside our heads that lead us out of fear and into freedom. From: Slow Slide into the Truth-"Beth's hand shook as she gripped the vial and watched the foam from her saliva bubble precariously close to the rim like champagne in a flute. She wondered if she would regret this moment forever as she lifted it up to the light to ensure that the liquid had reached the full line. Her innocence would soon end when the sample was mailed and there was no longer an escape from the truth it would reveal. You have no choice, she told herself, as she closed the lid and watched the liquid in the cap mix with her DNA. She shook it gently, exactly as instructed, and placed it in the bag marked SAMPLE, careful to firmly adhere the seal and confirm that the ID number matched what she had just entered online. The blank space designated for username remained empty as she wrestled with how to proceed. The truth was not an option." * * * * *"Beth felt a chill go down her spine. Something about this client's energy felt off. Her stories, if seen on the written page, were dark, yet her body language did not match the narrative. Week after week Beth listened to her report the details of her husband's outbursts, each account worse than the last, but Beth was distracted by the qualities of her speech. It was lyrical with a resonance you would use to describe puppies or a gorgeous sunset, not abuse, and it triggered a familiar fear in Beth. Her jaw tensed and her heart rate increased with each word that flowed silkily from her client's mouth like a siren's song."Kim St. Clair is a trauma-informed psychotherapist certified in Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) working in private practice. She was born in Northeast Ohio and spent most of her life there but has enjoyed moving around the country for the last 13 years and currently lives near Austin, Texas. When not seeing clients or writing, she is happiest outside practicing yoga, biking, or sitting beside water enjoying the view.

This book examines and analyses the connections between gastronomy, tourism and the media. It argues that in the modern world, gastronomy is increasingly a major component and driver of tourism and that destinations are using their cuisines and food cultures in marketing to increase their competitive advantage. It proposes that these processes are interconnected with film, television, print and social media. The book emphasises the notion of gastronomy as a dynamic concept, in particular how it has recently become more widely used and understood throughout the world. The volume introduces core concepts and delves more deeply into current trends in gastronomy, the forces which shape them and their implications for tourism. The book is multidisciplinary and will appeal to researchers in the fields of gastronomy, hospitality, tourism and media studies.
