In highly-segregated Tulsa, Oklahoma in June, 1921, a white mob attacked the mostly Black neighborhood of Greenwood. Hundreds of people were killed, and thousands injured. Homes, businesses, schools, and churches were burned or looted. The city government supported the mob, insurance companies refused to cover the losses, and the KKK touted it as a great success. The news media barely mentioned it, and it was rarely reported on or taught about in schools. For decades it was referred to as a riot, and only recently has the more accurate term "massacre" been applied in official documents. Kris (1934) handlar om Malin Forst, Karin Boyes alter ego. Forst är ung och hängivet gudstroende, hon hamnar i en depression som hon tolkar religiöst. Hon upplever inte längre en gudsnärvaro. Forst blir förälskad i en kvinna för första gången, vilket dämpar hennes samvetskval och oro. Kris är ett modernistiskt formexperiment som varvar två olika typer av partier. I det ena får vi följa Malins inre liv och utveckling. I andra stycken är olika livshållningar representerade; läsaren når även kunskap om Forsts liv via insprängda prosadikter, citat ur brev och dagböcker... För de som tidigare endast stiftat bekantskap med Boyes poesipärlor utgör Kris en utmärkt introduktion till hennes prosa.
KARIN BOYE kom ut med denna sin tredje roman Kris 1934. Den är ett modernistiskt formexperiment. Hon kände ett inre tvång att skriva romanen och försöka förstå sig på sina egna inre kval. Malin Forst är ett alter ego i romanen. Boken kom ut tretton år efter de egentliga händelserna. Karin Boye hade tagit studenten och började på lärarseminariet. Under året, i sin sena tonårstid, drabbades hon av både fysiska och psykiska kval. Hon var djärv som satte sig upp mot olika auktoriteter. När det i Sverige fortfarande var olagligt med homosexualitet bejakade Malin Forst sin förälskelse i en studiekamrat. Och när hon var en av den kvinnliga rektorns favoritelever trotsade hon ändå henne, hon hävdade att psykologi var viktigare än kristendom. Uppgörelsen med den bokstavstrogna religionen eskalerade under seminarieåret. Extramaterialet i denna specialutgåva är två förord, det ena av LENNART KOSKINEN, före detta biskop på Gotland, och det andra av BIRGITTA HOLM, professor i litteraturvetenskap vid Uppsala universitet. Också brev och dikter av Karin Boye ingår, precis som funderingar författarkollegan HARRY MARTINSON hade om Karin Boyes livssituation. KARIN BOYE (1900-1941) tillhör våra klassiska författare, både med ofta citerade dikter och romanen Kallocain. När hon vann ett nordiskt pris 1931 för sin debutroman Astarte var hon en etablerad författare. Snart följde fler romaner, bland annat Kris, och sist men inte minst Kallocain.
