When quiet, shy Verity eventually finds the courage to speak up, she discovers that standing on her own two feet can be amazing! Verity is a shy preschooler who is accommodating and quiet, and always does whatever others tell her. She picks up after her friends, has no say in games, and even plays second fiddle to a drooling baby at the doctor’s office. After a typical week of quiet deference to everyone around her, Verity is miserable. But when she is overlooked at swimming class (her most favorite thing of all), Verity realizes something needs to change — and she discovers within herself the courage to speak up. What she finds is that by speaking up in a polite, positive way, she can change her world for the better and find joy in asserting herself. Verity Finds Her Voice will help children who might be a little scared to speak up learn that not only is it okay to be assertive, but it can bring happiness, and that being a good friend to yourself is just as important as being a good friend to others.

Domestic Violence and the Politics of Privacy

Domestic Violence and the Politics of Privacy

Kelly Kristin A.

CORNELL UNIVERSITY PRESS

Although domestic violence is not new, it has only recently been recognized as a problem meriting public attention. Great strides have been made in some areas—such as protection orders and shelter provision—but the problem as a whole has proven extremely resistant to countermeasures. In Domestic Violence and the Politics of Privacy, Kristin A. Kelly argues that understanding this resistance requires a recognition of the tension within liberalism between preserving the privacy of the family and protecting vulnerable individuals. Practical, real-world information gained from frontline workers underpins the author's suggestions for how to address this tension. In emphasizing the roles of democratic institutions and community participation in determining the shape of future policy about domestic violence, Kelly replaces the traditional opposition of the public and private spheres with a triangular relationship. The state, the family, and the community comprise the three corners.Kelly builds upon interviews with more than forty individuals working directly on the problem of domestic violence. Her model is further formed by a critical analysis of the theoretical and legal frameworks used to understand and regulate the relationship between public and private.

Year after year a majority of the titles on ALA’s Banned Books list, which compiles titles threatened with censorship, are either YA books or adult books that are frequently read by teens. It’s important for YA librarians to understand the types of challenges occurring in libraries around the nation and to be ready to deal with such challenges when they occur. The Young Adult Library Services (YALSA) has tailored this book specifically for these situations, providing much-needed guidance on the highly charged topic of intellectual freedom for teens. Among the issues addressed are How to prepare yourself and your staff for potential challenges by developing a thoughtful selection policy and response plan Resources for help when a challenge occurs The art of crafting a defense for a challenged book, and pointers for effectively disseminating your response through the press and social media The latest on intellectual freedom in the digital realm, including an examination of library technology Using examples of censorship battles in both school and public libraries to illustrate possible scenarios, this guidebook gives YA librarians the foreknowledge and support to ensure intellectual freedom for teens.
A Mind of Your Own: The Truth about Depression and How Women Can Heal Their Bodies to Reclaim Their Lives
New York Times bestsellerInternational bestsellerNamed one of the top health and wellness books for 2016 by MindBodyGreenDepression is not a disease. It is a symptom.Recent years have seen a shocking increase in antidepressant use the world over, with 1 in 4 women starting their day with medication. These drugs have steadily become the panacea for everything from grief, irritability, panic attacks, to insomnia, PMS, and stress. But the truth is, what women really need can't be found at a pharmacy.According to Dr. Kelly Brogan, antidepressants not only overpromise and underdeliver, but their use may permanently disable the body's self-healing potential. We need a new paradigm: The best way to heal the mind is to heal the whole body.In this groundbreaking, science-based and holistic approach, Dr. Brogan shatters the mythology conventional medicine has built around the causes and treatment of depression. Based on her expert interpretation of published medical findings, combined with years of experience from her clinical practice, Dr. Brogan illuminates the true cause of depression: it is not simply a chemical imbalance, but a lifestyle crisis that demands a reset. It is a signal that the interconnected systems in the body are out of balance - from blood sugar, to gut health, to thyroid function- and inflammation is at the root.A Mind of Your Own offers an achievable, step-by-step 30-day action plan--including powerful dietary interventions, targeted nutrient support, detoxification, sleep, and stress reframing techniques--women can use to heal their bodies, alleviate inflammation, and feel like themselves again without a single prescription.Bold, brave, and revolutionary, A Mind of Your Own takes readers on a journey of self-empowerment for radical transformation that goes far beyond symptom relief.

The idea is to reveal the most-promising concepts and prune the least promising before significant resources are invested. The goal is not to predict the future, but to show how a concept would fare across various potential futures.
