Grace Hopper and the Invention of the Information Age
The career of computer visionary Grace Murray Hopper, whose innovative work in programming laid the foundations for the user-friendliness of today's personal computers that sparked the information age.A Hollywood biopic about the life of computer pioneer Grace Murray Hopper (1906-1992) would go like this: a young professor abandons the ivy-covered walls of academia to serve her country in the Navy after Pearl Harbor and finds herself on the front lines of the computer revolution. She works hard to succeed in the all-male computer industry, is almost brought down by personal problems but survives them, and ends her career as a celebrated elder stateswoman of computing, a heroine to thousands, hailed as the inventor of computer programming. Throughout Hopper's later years, the popular media told this simplified version of her life story. In Grace Hopper and the Inventionof theInformation Age, Kurt Beyer reveals a more authentic Hopper, a vibrant and complex woman whose career paralleled the meteoric trajectory of the postwar computer industry. Both rebellious and collaborative, Hopper was influential in male-dominated military and business organizations at a time when women were encouraged to devote themselves to housework and childbearing. Hopper's greatest technical achievement was to create the tools that would allow humans to communicate with computers in terms other than ones and zeroes. This advance influenced all future programming and software design and laid the foundation for the development of user-friendly personal computers.

City Planning for Civil Engineers, Environmental Engineers, and Surveyors
While engineers and surveyors are not urban planners, they are often engaged in urban development. Therefore, a high degree of competence in civil engineering specialties such as surveying and mapping, highway and transportation engineering, water resources engineering, environmental engineering, and, particularly, municipal engineering requires an understanding of urban development problems and urban planning objectives, principles, and practices. With this in mind, City Planning for Civil Engineers, Environmental Engineers, and Surveyors focuses on areas of urban planning with which civil and environmental engineers and surveyors are most likely to come into contact or conflict, in which engineers and surveyors may be required to participate, and for which engineers may be required to provide necessary leadership. The text stresses basic concepts and principles of practice involved in urban planning as most widely practiced, particularly in small and medium-sized communities. It introduces engineering students to land-use planning as a foundation for infrastructure systems planning and development. It also presents plan implementation devices such as zoning, land subdivision control, official mapping, and capital improvement programming. It describes the factors affecting good land subdivision design and improvement. In addition, the text illustrates the importance of good mapping and control surveys for planning purposes. Written from the perspective that cities are social and economic as well as physical entities, the book offers a historical context for urban planning. There are a large number of texts on the subject of urban planning, but most generally do not address in any comprehensive way the engineering problems encountered in urban planning. This book delineates these problems and stresses the importance of close cooperation between civil engineers and planning professionals to achieving effective urb
Employment, Wages and Income Distribution
Whilst there is widespread agreement about the goals of economic policy, consensus about how best to achieve them can be harder to achieve. No issues are more contentious than employment and income distribution. In recent years full employment and a just distribution of incomes have been downgraded as policy objectives, as greater priority has been given to price stability and balance of payments objectives. This emphasis has been supported by a mainstream economic theory which has an unswerving belief in the ability of market forces to achieve a satisfactory regulation of employment and income distribution Other economists have remained more sceptical, and none more so than Kurt Rothschild. This new volume collects together his twenty two most important essays in the area, many of which are appearing in English for the first time. Throughout pure theory is linked to relevant practical investigations.
Celtic Politics

Celtic Politics

Celtic Politics offers a model of politics that facilitates the analysis of the Celtic fringe in the political life of Great Britain and Ireland. It is a much-needed corrective to the standard academic approach to British, Scottish, Welsh, and Irish politics and history. This book will help readers conceptualize and understand the Scots, Irish, and Welsh, as well as their interconnected political contexts and systems. Politics in twenty-first century Britain and Ireland have recently seen a rise in ethno-nationalism. This is due to the institutional changes, transformations of political cultures, and geo-political alterations that took place in the latter decades of the twentieth century, widely impacting the status of Celtic nations. Celtic Politics provides a concise explanation of the political development of these nations and illuminates the overall historical significance of this region.

This study demonstrates why the global economy and global policies can only be understood by assigning equal importance to actors from different continents and international institutions. The contributors begin by examining the effects of reducing trade barriers through the WTO processes, and the implications for our understanding of market forces, the diminishing capacity of governments, consumer power, and the role of international agreements. They provide fascinating details on how the European Union and Japan develop their own strategies toward emerging Asian and Latin American states, quite separately from the United States. The focus then shifts toward integration processes in Latin America. The book concludes by attempting to make sense of the political principles underlying the complex economic policies of the main actors in today's global economy, focusing on development strategies offered by the World Bank.

Do you often wonder where God is in the midst of your pain? Have you faced a situation that seems hopeless and thought about giving up? Bubna shares encouraging insights on discovering hope in the shadow of great suffering. He'll explain how God transforms us, taking us from tragedy to a life of adventure. You'll be encouraged by these vital realities: Struggles and setbacks don't have to be the end of your story. God uses pain and challenges as a chisel to shape us into greatness.
