Little Lance Pototschnik wanted to grow up and play pro football, but that pipe dream got smoked by his lethargic growth hormones and a terrible skin disorder. The death of his childhood aspirations did, however, plant the seeds for Lance to find comedy in rejection and suffering. In this gaspingly funny collection of stories, Lance's battle with disease, his overbearing parents, and his maniacal bosses push him toward the startling discovery that the daily grind--which scrapes the gold off even the best of us--is the very thing that reveals what we are truly made of. This book is for every intellectual slacker whose very soul is straining against the chains of a dead-end job, a disease, or bad culture. Golden Monkey is a hysterical and bittersweet look at the dark moments that define us, and the triumphant aftermath when we get to say, with all our hearts, that we know exactly who the hell we are. This story had one of the saddest, most honest and powerful paragraphs I think I have ever read. It was then shortly followed by an ending that made me laugh out loud, literally. --Read_by_Red"Humorous" may be the wrong word to describe this book. "Hilarious" better fits the tone. --JD Jung, Underrated Reads

Marley meets... Cujo ? What would you do if there was a dog in your neighborhood forced to live outside day in/ day out, at the mercy of abusers, wild animals and brutal weather?Walter does nothing--at first. Then, an accidental meeting with Lance, a Border Collie, sets the wheels in motion for a down-to-the-wire, life-saving rescue and a disappointing discovery: Lance turns out to be a threat to anyone he can get his teeth on--including his rescuers Their lives turned upside down by this semi-feral "pet," Walter and his wife Clara are forced to answer a painful question: do they euthanize the dog they rescued? Making their life-or-death choice even more difficult is Lance's hilarious quirkiness; when not threatening, he's incredibly entertaining--though a State Trooper, the local drug dealer, and a Megan's Law parolee, among many others, would beg to differ. This rollicking, thought-provoking, and--at times--heart-wrenching true-life account of the unorthodox rescue of an unorthodox dog is guaranteed to captivate: -Dog lovers-Recovering addicts (there are numerous passages that the 12-step community will relate to) -Survivors of child abuse (the author reveals his own poignant connection with Lance)-Any reader who can laugh, cry, or enjoy having her/his faith in humanity restored.

He no longer needs to touch a person just being near them allows him to feel their intentions. Excerpt: As in, all family's as time goes by the family gets larger. In this case, it was not through childbirth but by Marriage and friendship. Darryl Hartley was sitting in his gun shop going over some gun orders when his nephew his sister's boy Lonnie came in. The boy reminded Darryl of himself when he was in high school but more athletic. Lonnie was a 6ft 3 inch 225lb junior linebacker with long blond hair to his shoulders that his father hated. Who in turn was a very large man himself that stood 6ft 6inches and weighed close to 265lbs with this flaming red hair that he kept in a butch haircut. He had this milk white skin. His name was Claude Pearson he was a former Marine of 20 years that could not get into the special-forces unit. Claude was an enforcer for the Arian Brotherhood in that area. "Lonnie said" "Uncle Darryl we need to talk about my Dad." "Darryl said" "What has that block head done now to you or my sister." "Lonnie said" "He has quit hitting us since you told him you would kill him so it is not that. Well Unc my girlfriend is this little Mexican girl named Mona. Her family has only been in the United States for the past seven years and they got their citizen ship several years ago. "Darryl said" "What does your idiot father plan on doing" "Lonnie said" " I overheard him talking with one of his Arian Brotherhood buddies about getting together and disposing of some Mexican trash. He has been asking me questions about where Mona's parents live where her father works does. That sort of stuff from me" "Lonnie continued" "He still beats my mom when he does not think I am around then tells her if she tells me or you he will kill her and me" "Darryl said" "We will see who is going to kill who." With that, Darryl picked up the phone and called Lance. "Darryl said" "Lance I need to talk with you on an urgent life and death matter and your help if you are able to supply it." "Lance said" "Are you in trouble my friend?" "Darryl said" "I just need to rid myself of a problem for my nephew and sister" "Darryl said" "We have been friends since junior high. You have been coming into my shop for the last few years getting different hunting equipment. I never said anything nor asked any question or asked you for anything. I need someone who I can trust." "Lance said" "I will be at your gun shop within the hour. I am going to bring along someone is that Ok." "Darryl said" "That is ok with me so long as you trust the person" Lance and Stephen showed up at Hartly's Gun and Ammo within an hour. "Lance said" "Darryl I would like you to meet my Brother Stephen he is a gun aficionado like you." "Darryl shook Stephens hand said" "See anything you like? "Stephen smiling said" "I like it all". Darryl introduced Lonnie and the four of them began to talk, with Lonnie explaining about his dad. When Lance shook Lonnie's hand, he felt a warm feeling come over him. He looked into Lonnie's eyes smiled "said" "You are one of us." "Darryl said to Lonnie" " You know I am going to have to kill your Dad that is if Lance and Stephen will help me with the Arian Brotherhood." " Lance said" "That is not a problem you are my friend you helped me when I needed some weapons even though you felt the purpose of the weapons was not for hunting." Stephen "said," "Do you even have to ask of course I am in" "Lance said" " I want everyone to meet here this Saturday morning then we will go to Lonnie's girlfriend's house to meet her and her parents." "Darryl said to Lonnie" "Can you find out where and when your Dad and his buddies hold their meeting." "Lonnie said, "Yes I can. I am no longer a Pearson but a Hartley.

Through the Lance Armstrong Foundation, Armstrong supports cancer research and treatment while he serves as the ultimate inspiration for other athletes and cancer survivors.Lance Armstrong: A Biography provides a detailed treatment of Armstrong's life, from the lasting influences of his boyhood and the early years of his competitive training, to his battle with cancer, his divorce, and the birth of his fifth child during his second comeback to professional cycling. In the years between 1941 and 1965, Lance Comfort made some of the most entertaining films in Britain. There was the striking success of his second feature as director, Hatter’s Castle (1941) and when he returned to this melodramatic vein in 1945 he made a series of highly proficient and enjoyable studies in obsession, including Bedelia (1946) with Margaret Lockwood as a murderess, and Temptation Harbour (1947) starring Robert Newton as a decent man in the grip of erotic attraction. Comfort’s career has never been charted in full – that is, from the apprenticeship in the 1930s, through the melodramas of the 1940s to the often rewarding co-features of the following two decades. His is in many ways a prototypical career in British cinema: his very attractive body of work has been marginalised by critical focus on a few giant figures. This is a book that will appeal to all students and researchers in British cinema, as well as to anyone with an interest in British films – and why they were the way they were – in their most productive period.

Edited by internationally known photographer and visual artist, Christopher Makos. Born in 1951 Alanson Russell 'Lance' Loud was an American magazine columnist and new wave rock-n-roll performer. Loud is best known for his 1973 appearance in An American Family, a pioneer reality television series that featured his coming out, leading to his status as an icon in the gay community. However, Lance Loud was so much more than a gay icon, as witnessed here. Enlisting moving essays by each of his family members, along with Lance's friends and colleagues - such as Bobby Mayhem, David Keeps, Rufus Wainwright, and Cherry Vanilla, among others - Pat Loud has constructed, through a partnership with visual artist Makos, a moving portrait of a joyous and beloved individual. Lance Loud came to represent the gay community, and in addition, embodied the creative spirit and genius of outsider status that became the 1980s and fuelled so much of what has evolved today in our culture in terms of art, music and literature. In 2003, PBS broadcast the program, Lance Loud: A Death in an American Family, which was filmed in 2001 while visiting the family again, at the invitation of Lance before his death at age 50. As seen here, short as Lance's life was, it was a monumental one that continues to resonate to the present day.
