Focusing on the vexed friendship between Hart Crane and Allen Tate, this book examines twentieth-century American poetry's progress toward institutional sanction and professional organization, a process in which sexual identities, poetic traditions, and literary occupations were in question and at stake. Langdon Hammer combines biography and formalist analysis to argue that American modernism was a Janus-faced phenomenon, at once emancipatory and elitist, which simultaneously attacked traditional cultural authority and reconstructed it in new forms. Hammer shows how Crane and Tate, working in relation to each other and to T. S. Eliot, created for themselves the competing roles of "genius" and "poet-critic." Crane embraced the self-authorizing powers of the individual talent at the cost of standing outside the emerging consensus of high modernist literary culture, an aesthetic isolation which converged with his social isolation as a gay man. Tate, turning against Crane, linked the modernist defense of tradition to an embattled heterosexual masculinity, while he adapted Eliot's stance to a career sustained by criticism and teaching. Ending his book with a discussion of Robert Lowell's career, Hammer maintains that Lowell's "confessional" poetry recapitulates the conflict enacted by Crane and Tate. Originally published in 1993. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Vem vinner i längden? : Hammarby IF, Malmö FF och svensk fotboll

Langdon Gilkey's theological method distinguishes three stages of the theological enterprise, namely, prolegomenon, constructive theology and theology of culture. In this book the author employs this threefold division as an organizing principle for the exposition and evaluation of Gilkey's thought. Walsh proposes further, however, that the whole project is best understood if seen primarily in terms of the third stage. Consequently the book focuses on Gilkey's theology of culture and interprets his prolegomenon and constructive theology in terms of their foundational relevance to his theology of modernity in decline. Interpreted in this way the project as a whole displays a coherent interrelatedness. That coherence also means, however, that ambiguity and weak arguments in both the prolegomenon and constructive theology are reflected in the theology of culture. These deficiencies notwithstanding, Gilkey's theology of culture provides us with an analysis and diagnosis of modernity that plumbs to the religious depths of that culture. Such analysis is necessary for all cultures but especially for cultures in decline. Co-published with the Institute for Christian Studies.

Langdon Harve' Wilson, from Abbeville, South Carolina, wanted to be a fighter pilot after flight training, but like many fellow pilots never expected to end up in a heavy bomber. By no means a hero-type, the unassuming Lt. Wilson flew as a co-pilot and later as a first pilot on the B-24 Liberator with the Fifteenth Air Force. As a member of one of the first organized American bomb groups to operate out of North Africa and Southern Italy, his crew's bomber--nicknamed the "Flame McGoon" (from the "Lil Abner" comic strip)--became the iconic, redoubtable, lucky aircraft of his Squadron. His and other first person accounts from the 513th Squadron, 376th "Liberandos" are here painstakingly overlapped with the official mission reports to give the clearest possible depiction of air combat over Germany, Austria, and Eastern Europe in the most critical stage of the 15th Air Force's bombing campaign. Then, we see Wilson postwar, returning to active duty for the Cold War but dealing with undocumented (but evident) issues related to his service. Third non-fiction title by this author in a focus on ordinary South Carolina veterans of World War II.]

The gritty neon charm of late '70s Times Square42nd Street, 1979 contains Langdon Clay's (born 1949) photos of a quintessential strip of 42nd Street near New York's Times Square--showing its gritty neon charm before it became the more Disney/Las Vegas hub for theater concoctions that we know today.Clay recalls the drab and dusty mood in New York City at the end of the 1970s: the political sea change wrought by the Vietnam War and Haight Ashbury had given way to a sense of apathy, intensified by the aftermath of an oil crisis and the lingering Cold War. The stretch of 42nd Street between 7th and 8th Avenues had now shifted from the glorious home of gilded movie palaces of the 1940s to the shadowy site of porn theaters which many saw as the area's ruin. Yet here real-estate moguls saw potential to transform this heart of Manhattan into a mecca of tourism, framed by skyscrapers and shaped by commerce and fast pleasures. "It was with this coming change written on every wall that I sought to record for posterity that famous block between 7th and 8th Avenues," says Clay.

From 1974 to 1976, Langdon Clay (born 1949) photographed the cars he encountered while wandering the streets of New York City and nearby Hoboken, New Jersey, at night. Shot in Kodachrome with a Leica and deftly lit with then-new sodium vapor lights, the pictures feature a distinct array of makes and models set against the gritty details of their surrounding urban and architectural environments, and occasionally the ghostly presence of people. "I experienced a conversion of sorts in making a switch from the 'decisive moment' of black and white to the marvel of color, a world I was waking up to every day," Clay writes of this work. "At the time it seemed like an obvious and natural transition. What was less obvious was how to reflect my world of New York City in color ... I discovered that night was its own color and I fell for it." Langdon Clay was born in New York City in 1949. He grew up in New Jersey and Vermont and attended school in New Hampshire and Boston. Clay moved to New York in 1971 and spent the next sixteen years photographing there, around the country and in Europe for various magazines and books. In 1987 he moved to Mississippi where he has since lived with his wife, photographer Maude Schuyler Clay, and their three children.

A top vaudeville comedian for the first quarter of the 20th century, Harry Langdon rose from performing in Midwest traveling shows to headlining at the Palace Theatre in New York City. He was compared to Chaplin for his work in the classic silent films Tramp, Tramp, Tramp and The Strong Man, and he is often recognized as one of the "big four silent comedians" alongside Chaplin, Lloyd and Keaton. Later in his career, Langdon appeared in a number of talking films, starring or co-starring in almost a hundred of them between 1924 and 1945 and working with several legendary directors, from Frank Capra to Michael Curtiz. This second edition of the only book-length biography of Langdon includes significant new information, including expanded coverage of his early years and more personal details that fill out the human side to the Langdon story. The book also includes a comprehensive filmography and several photographs from all phases of Langdon's life and career.

Two friends, one white, the other black, discover a solid silver lock-box hidden in an antique desk and, on impulse, one of them decides to steal it. Inside is a sheaf of papers bound with twine. Assuming the papers to be nothing more than a worthless diary, they toss them aside but soon discover their mistake. The manuscript is in fact a previously unknown sequel to Mark Twain's novel, Huckleberry Finn. When the box is stolen, the men set out to find it and redeem themselves, encountering prejudice and bigotry along the way that parallels Twain's story, and leads them to a shocking truth about their own shared past.
