Throughout North America, there are uncounted thousands of small churches that are struggling to survive and recover their vitality. Some are Baptist, some are Methodist, some are Presbyterian, some are Lutheran, some are Christian Churches, some are independent, some are rural Catholic congregations, and others belong to less common denominations. It is behind the pulpits of these small, struggling churches that new preachers are most likely to find themselves standing. But there are few books that are designed to help the small church of less than 75 members - which is about the average size of a North American Protestant church. And leadership seminars are of little use - most consider any church with 200 active members to be a small church, yet we who lead them know that there is a tremendous difference in capability between a church of 150 members and a church of 25 members.Yet in these churches there are always a few committed people, people who are grieving because their church is dying, people who understand how important it was that their church stood in that particular location in times past, people who have memories of baptisms, of bible schools, of revivals, of great, wonderful, life-changing sermons - and people with memories of church fights, of poor pastors, of financial problems, of dull and boring days in those same pews. It is to these loyal, grieving laypeople like yourself that this book is intended, a novel which can be read by a small weekly fellowship group. It is for you, the small church pastors who may be leading two, three, or even more churches and need ideas on how to grow small churches without a budget. It is for the committed but exhausted part-time pastor who works another full-time job in order that this particular church will not close. And it is for the new student pastor who is in his or her first church, trying to make all those seminary and bible college ideas work in the real world. It is hoped that many of these ideas will be helpful and useful and life-giving to your churches. My wife and son and I have led small churches. Between us, we have led twenty-one churches, the largest of which has typical Sunday attendance of 115 people, and the smallest of which has had attendance of one to three people. I have attended churches in the Atlanta suburbs and on the West Virginia back roads. Church members ranged from doctors and lawyers, to schoolteachers and college professors, to goat farmers and truck drivers, to recovering drug addicts and people who had been retired for thirty years. The issues in the churches were always different - yet always the same. Many of these ideas have come together as I prepared district- and state-level courses training lay leaders of churches. Other ideas simply arose as the Holy Spirit advised me how to proceed with problems in the churches I have pastored. This book is the fictionalized story of a couple of churches and how their pastors, with special help, turned around the churches. This book uses the form and style of a novel to bring sound principles into the church, principles that work, principles that can lift a church from death's door to vitality and promise. This "teaching novel" style has a history of success in such books at In His Steps by Charles M Sheldon, The Noticer and The Noticer Returns by Andy Andrews, and, in a different realm, The Goal by Eliyahu Goldratt.Questions are provided at the end of each chapter to encourage discussion. It should be noted that, while my theology is that of an evangelical Wesleyan, the vast majority of the concepts presented are applicable to almost any small church. How do we grow a church with no young people and no money? How do we recover a church where the pastor is the youth group? What are the common mistakes new pastors make? Let "Larry" give you the answers.

Born a Soldier is a tour of the mid-20th century's conflicts with the remarkable Larry Thorne. Capturing the "times" as well as the "life" of its protagonist, it is a journey with a truly amazing and colorful man. Born "Lauri T rni," Thorne fought in Finland's first to last battles with Russia winning the country's equivalent of the Congressional Medal of Honor. As the legendary leader of one of the most elite companies in the Finnish army, one of the best armies of World War II, Thorne carried a price on his head, dead or alive, from the Red Army, reputedly the only Finnish soldier so singled out. When World War changed to Cold War, Thorne was a refugee, political prisoner, fugitive, exile, and illegal alien, and eventually gained legal status in the US through an Act of Congress. An early member of the Green Berets he was soon a legend there, too: the book The Green Berets' first Vietnam hero, "Kornie" in Chapter One, the chapter that served as the basis for the movie.
Searching for Uncle Larry: A Missing Airplane Mystery
A Promise is a PromiseAt the age of five, I promised my grandmother that I would find her son, Larry Grasha who went missing in a B-24 Liberator bomber in South America on his way to World War II in Europe. This began a search that lasted a lifetime. It not only brought me into contact with others who lost relatives on the flight but mysterious people with special powers that appeared out of nowhere to help me with my search. They not only provided answers but also raised disturbing questions. In this regard, I was sternly warned by a psychic not to pursue this mission due to the involvement of "strong and dangerous forces." In fact, various people who helped me suddenly and unexpectedly died. My search involved two grueling trips to the jungles of French Guiana, from which I did not expect to return. But I had no choice. I gave my word. It was a point of honor. A Promise is a Promise.

This concise, practical textbook demonstrates the many ways in which culture influences the public speaking process in contemporary settings. International business, workforce diversity, cross-cultural healthcare, multicultural education, changing domestic demographics, and the growing global interdependencies of all nations have created an environment where public speakers must be aware of the role that culture plays in all communication contexts. Public Speaking in a Multicultural Society: The Essentials moves students from basic concepts to more detailed subjects, but avoids encyclopedic, in-depth treatment of many nonessential theoretical considerations. Every chapter offers a wide selection of domestic and international examples of cultural diversity in order to illustrate concepts. The examples are designed to increase student awareness of such current multicultural and international issues as AIDS, immigration, Iraq, Afghanistan, and family values, without advocating any specific positions. Features: * Contains material on how to adapt the various aspects of public speaking to a multicultural setting and addressing multicultural audiences* Offers comprehensive applied and theoretical coverage on how different cultures view and react to communication* Fuses theoretical and pedagogical practices with "real life" public speaking experiences* Provides practical suggestions for overcoming speech anxiety, and describes methods for improving critical listening skills* Includes a discussion of the ethical dimensions of public speaking* Discusses how to critically evaluate reference sources, with an emphasis on the Internet* Explores effective employment of visual aids, including electronic visual media and cutting-edge technologies that support and enhance public speaking* Integrates activities and exercises at the end of each chapter* Enhances student understanding with chapter summaries and discussion questions* Supplemented by a comprehensive Instructor's Manual/Testing Program that features learning goals, outlined chapter summaries, a test bank including essay questions, and a sample syllabus

Invitation to a War: My Early War Experience at Pearl Harbor and Guadalcanal
Invitation to a War is a young shipyard worker's eye-witness experience of the Pacific War, (the Pacific Theater of WW2), at Pearl Harbor and Guadalcanal. Larry was invited by the Navy Labor Board to work in Hawaii while he took time off from Ohio State University to earn the finances needed for his junior year. On his first Sunday morning in Oahu, he planned to meet with his brother who was stationed at Pearl Harbor. Waiting there at the Navy Yard Dry Dock No. 1, taking in the sights of the harbor and the USS Pennsylvania, the scene changed astonishingly as Pearl Harbor was brutally attacked before his own eyes. His story details the horror of the attack, its aftermath, and the courage and dedication of the survivors working to rebuild. After months of round-the-clock work and with deep concern that the Japanese would attack again soon, Larry used the occasion of his first day off to join the US Army. This time, should the enemy invade, he wanted to be carrying a rifle. Serving in the 25th Division as a forward artillery spotter, he was part of the effort to aid and relieve elements of the 1st and 2nd Marine Corps Divisions at Guadalcanal. His memoirs describe the violent combat, the tense missions behind enemy lines, camp activities, and life of an American serviceman in World War II. This history celebrates the character, courage, and even the indomitable humor of those who fought.
