Seeking her own redemption, Latanya, the lead character, is a newly released ex-convict, hustler, and former gang banger. Fresh from a five-year sentence in prison, she has softened her world view through therapeutic journaling and writing. She was a teenage, single parent who enjoyed the fast life until she "caught" one too many charges. She is guilt ridden for not being there for her daughter, and for the harm she has brought to others. Can she use her street smarts and ability to hustle to do good? At the funeral of her daughter's best friend, she realizes nothing has changed since she went in; people are still proposing the same tired solutions, and using the same tired rhetoric. Latanya decides to start a writing group for gang-involved girls as a way to help them deal with their issues and hopefully make different life choices than she did. It's an uphill, life-or-death battle she must win as a way to be a role model for her daughter, redeem herself, and potentially save the lives of the girls and prevent the next senseless homicide in the world of gangs, girls and guns. Latanya is a book on gang violence as told from the perspective of women: sisters, girlfriends and mothers, using vignettes frequently found in urban newscasts. The scenes are authentic and based on real life experiences. This is a fresh and unexplored perspective as the voices of women are not heard in the discussion of gun and gang violence, even though women are involved in one out of three incidents as either a victim, perpetrator and accomplice. Young ladies who hang with gang-involved men have a greater chance of getting shot than the guy. Often overlooked is the positive role women can and do play in helping deter violence. "The idea was for the reader who is familiar with urban street life, particularly gang life and the corresponding gun violence, to identify with the stories because they have either heard of or experienced something similar," says author Ed Gaskin. This book tells the story of Latanya in the form of a treatment and outline for a play or movie. It is ideal for those who want to develop skits or facilitate discussions on various real life scenarios. Hopefully, someone would film a movie based on the story as a way to reach more people with this story and message. There are a number of topics that can be addressed based on these stories. This edition includes 34 potential discussion questions and a resource list. Just as we have discussions on substance abuse, and sex education, given the incidents of violence with which young women are involved, we need to make young ladies aware of the dangers of gang involvement. Based on research, we have come to see the importance of gender specific programming and this book is a contribution to that effort."I wrote the story as a cautionary tale because the life and advantages of gang involvement as seen from the outside or in movies and videos are far more glamorous than the reality. In addition I wanted to address the issue of women's empowerment and trauma. Often the "Ride or Die" philosophy of the street is not challenged and it leads to the exploitation of women. While there is a lot of violence depicted in rap videos and movies, what isn't shown is the resulting effect of trauma. We have not addressed the issues of trauma many of our kids are experiencing as they are shot, shot at or when they hear about and or see so many of their friends getting shot or killed." Ed Gaskin says. I would like to hear from you if you have heard of or experienced similar stories, use this book with your group and/or you have an idea as to who the perfect person to play Latanya would be. This is the second book in the "Latanya" series. The first book, Latanya: A Story of Gangs, Girls and Guns became a best seller reaching #10. The happy ending of the first book is short lived, because while Latanya was in the hospital and rehab, she did not have to worry about the dangers or the temptations of being on the street. That reality is over and is about to slap her hard. Latanya, a newly released ex-convict, hustler, former gang banger is trying to go straight, but has too many convictions, too many bills and too little education and money. Latanya faces an uphill battle to turn her life around, and not get burned out watching too many young men and women make fatal mistakes. For Latanya, temptation to return to the old "easy" life of fast money is everywhere. Can she resist temptation, be a role model for her daughter and the girls and perhaps help them make different choices so they don't lose their freedom or their lives? Released from rehab and newly recovered from near-fatal gunshot wounds, Latanya returns home to find herself evicted. Her criminal record (CORI) makes it impossible to find a job or a place to stay, and she's forced to take refuge in a homeless shelter. The pastor from a local church sees Latanya is trying to do the right thing and asks one of his members to take Latanya in, so she doesn't have to stay in the shelter. However, the old woman hates women like Latanya and is very mean to her and treats her like a child. Latanya goes to speak to the principal to get support for the girls' program she started. The principal realizes Latanya has some of the worst girls in the school in her writing program and decides to make a deal with her. If Latanya can get the girls who attend her program to not miss more than 17 days of school or drop out, Latanya will get $2,000. Getting the girls on her side is difficult and slow. Things are going OK until the girls find out Latanya is getting paid to keep them in school and the girls feel she is using them just like everyone else. So the girls stop coming to school. Latanya reaches a breaking point when she goes to talk to Kevin about her bad day, and her friend Kevin is killed in a drive-by while talking to an old friend. Unable to resist temptation, Latanya accepts some crack from a friend and gets high to dull her pain. Soon after, Latanya's parole officer (PO) demands she take a random drug test. Knowing she'll fail the test, she begs for one more chance, knowing a violation of her probation could lead her back to prison to finish her sentence. Her PO says he'll give her one chance but requires her goes to Al-Anon. She agrees and meets a physician named David at the meeting, and the two bond through their recovery. Despite her problems, Latanya must keep her troubled girls from dropping out because their future depends on staying in school. Will she beat the odds and turn her life around, as well as the lives of her girls?Purpose Through Latanya: Hindered but Not Defeated, viewers will experience the difficulties convicted felons have in rebuilding their lives after being in jail, particularly when they don't have an education and must start from scratch. The story showcases the unheard voices of the women who are the girlfriends, sisters, and mothers of gang members. It is the expectation that viewers (especially tweens, teens, and young women) will learn from Latanya's story and her problems as an ex-convict, and that viewers won't make the same mistakes after they experience Latanya's story.

The workbook provides numerous situations young women face and is designed to help facilitate discussions among participants between the ages of 12 - 24 on topics that are very real for young females in urban environments. The book takes scenarios from the Latanya story and provides questions for group or individual discussions. The discussion questions cover such topics as domestic violence, "snitching", various types of criminal activity and the corresponding legal consequences, grief and trauma, among others. The goal is through guided discussion to help young women critically evaluate their own beliefs, increase their awareness and understanding of important issues and where to go for help. The hope is with such understanding they make better choices for their development and future success. The participants guide provides spaces for those in the group to write their answers to the various questions either alone or working as a group. If they are working through it alone, it is hoped they can discuss their answers with a trusted, responsible adult and mentor.
