Behavioral Intervention in Health Care
It has been demonstrated that many medical problems, including insomnia, alcoholism, hypertension, headache, pain, obesity, and asthma, respond readily and reliably to behavior modification techniques. Yet, behavioral intervention has traditionally been a difficult area to assimilate into the medical and nursing curricula. In this text, Dr. Laura B. Cordon presents a behavioral-psychological perspective on intervention in health care, beginning with a definition of behavioral medicine and introducing the related issues of stress and patient compliance. With an emphasis on how behavioral intervention relates to clinical practice, Dr. Gordon examines such topics as the role of the patient's behavior in the symptom or disease, how the health care professional can identify those who will respond well to individual or family counseling, and the treatment of disease versus the maintenance of health. She concludes with an explanation of the need for less conventional facilities for treating psychophysiological and stress/tension disorders, pointing to the program currently in use at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center as one possible alternative approach.

Middlemen

A revealing account of how agents have shaped book publishing and the literary canon from the 1950s to today Middlemen rewrites literary history from the perspective of one of its most important but least visible figures: the literary agent. Chronicling the story of agents in the United States from the 1950s to today, Laura McGrath uncovers their critical role in the making of American literature. From the famed three-martini lunch to the Frankfurt Book Fair, Middlemen takes readers behind the scenes to show how agents influence what we read. Along the way, it explains why many debut novelists never publish another book, why agents champion short story collections even though they sell poorly, how agents advocate for writers of color in a system that values whiteness, and why there are so many New York novels. Weaving together original archival research, data analysis, and interviews with scores of agents and other publishing professionals, Middlemen demonstrates that agents—eighty percent of whom are in fact women—are much more than “middlemen.” As intermediaries between author and publisher, agents act as advocates, matchmakers, negotiators, and tastemakers, and they must balance artistic values with the commercial imperatives of publishing conglomerates. The book describes the decisive role agents have played in celebrated novels—from Jack Kerouac’s On the Road to Colson Whitehead’s The Intuitionist—but also in the creation of entire literary categories like the debut novel, the story collection, postmodernism, multiethnic fiction, and world literature. Featuring profiles of agents past and present such as Sterling Lord, Lynn Nesbit, Candida Donadio, Marie Brown, and Andrew Wylie, along with perspectives from agents at all stages of their careers, Middlemen is an entertaining and eye-opening account of how literary fiction—and the literary canon—is made.

Provincial Battles, National Prize?

In parliamentary systems like Canada, voters directly contribute to the election outcome only in their own riding. However, the focus of election campaigns is often national, emphasizing the leader rather than the local candidate, and national rather than regional polls. This suggests that elections are national contests, but election outcomes clearly demonstrate that support for parties varies strongly by province. Focusing on the 2015 Canadian election campaigns in British Columbia, Ontario, and Quebec, three large provinces with different subnational party systems, Provincial Battles, National Prize? evaluates whether we should understand elections in Canada as national wars or individual provincial clashes. The authors draw upon voter and candidate surveys, party campaign behaviour, and media coverage of the election to document how political parties vary their messages and strategies across provinces, how the media communicate and frame those messages, and how voters ultimately respond. The study shows that provincial variations in party support reflect differences in voters' political preferences rather than differences in party messages or media coverage. A novel and comprehensive study, Provincial Battles, National Prize? is the first and only thorough treatment of the party, media, and voter aspects of a federal election campaign through a subnational lens.

Like their librarian colleagues, reference archivists mediate between the user and the source material. However, given the nature of archival materials and of their holding repositories, unique issues arise. While such matters as provenance and original order and access and security continue to be vital underpinnings of their work, a myriad of other issues comes into play as reference archivists attempt to balance the competing demands of donors, researchers, the public, and the press. From the creation and dissemination of finding aids for electronic resources to the implementation of marketing strategies to increase support and strengthen service, Reference Services for Archives and Manuscripts shows you how to thrive in the changing world of archival reference. Intended to foster an appreciation of the issues both within and beyond the field of archives, Reference Services for Archives and Manuscripts reveals that today's archivist is straddling the world of the traditional with the world of the new. The book establishes its value as it guides you through new concerns such as how to:take advantage of technological developments in appraisal, accession, and preservation address copyright, privacy, and funding issues for electronic resources mount archival cataloging records on local and wide-area databases create a publicly available site on the Internet improve in-house access tools, professional abilities, and the caliber of public service address security issues and respond to theftReference Services for Archives and Manuscripts also helps you by preparing you for changes in the relationship between archivist and researcher that will inevitably occur with further changes in technology. Other vital issues discussed are improved access for unserved and underserved groups, a revision in ethical codes, and the ability of archivists to become more customer-centered.
Teaching with Interactive Shakespeare Editions

Teaching with Interactive Shakespeare Editions

This Element presents three case studies of interactive digital editions of Shakespeare incorporated into classroom teaching: WordPlay Shakespeare, PerformancePlus and myShakespeare. Each interactive edition combines the text of a Shakespeare play with a recorded performance. The case studies seek to understand whether and how interactive Shakespeare editions support ambitious teaching, where students are expected to engage in authentic academic tasks, experience social learning (dialogic rather than didactic), and demonstrate their new knowledge through meaningful assessments. In our time of pandemic and considerable public contention over equity and justice, ambitious teaching further requires attention to the whole selves of students – their psychological and social development as well as their intellectual attainment. This Element examines the opportunities that interactive digital editions give teachers, software developers and scholars to connect Shakespeare's works to twenty-first century students.

This book is written for women and all the parents who are dealing with or have dealt with cancer or childhood cancer. I truly feel your pain, and I know you feel mine. My deepest sympathies to those who are grieving, and my greatest love to all those who are surviving. This true story is one of amazing strength by a mother and daughter team as they undertake a three-and-a-half-year journey of battling Ewing's sarcoma, a rare bone and soft tissue cancer that affects children and young adults. During Tara's senior year of high school, when she was just 18 years old, she went in for what she thought would be a routine surgery to remove a lump above her right breast. She honestly never thought it could have been cancer Tara refused conventional treatments in the beginning, to investigate natural remedies instead. Unafraid of the huge controversy that is unfolding, she sought out the help from many natural and holistic practitioners. Together, Tara and I learned so much about the holistic ways of shopping, eating, and living. Our days were spent doing natural treatments and getting educated on what the body needs to be healthy. Then, the unthinkable happens. Tara's cancer turns aggressive, breaking her spine in four places, and she must undergo emergency radiation to save her life. As the story unfolds, details of our journey are explained through me, the mother's point of view, as well as Tara's journal entries and social media posts. After I wrote my first edition of Tara's Choice, I realized that my mind is filled with things that I've missed. I was a volcano erupting with visions of her; with stories, details and information that needed to be heard. Tara's story changed my life and the legacy she left behind will change yours.

In "The Nature of Change", Laura Young gives us tools to assist us in going beyond our fear of change and encourages us to do so in our own "signature" way. She provides us with an opportunity to know ourselves at a deeper level and to identify our personal patterns when we choose change or find it thrust upon us. Nobody else can change for us and nobody else changes quite like us. This book shines a beacon of light on many levels of change both internally and externally, past and present, slow and fast.
